De är i Hasason-Tamar,*20:2Hasason-TamarBetyder ungefär "grus med palmer", oas på Döda havets västra strand. det vill säga En-Gedi." 3 *Esra 8:21. Då greps Joshafat av fruktan och beslöt sig för att rådfråga Herren, och han utlyste en fasta över hela Juda. 4 Och Juda samlades för att söka hjälp hos Herren, och från alla Juda städer kom man för att söka Herren.

5 Joshafat steg upp i Juda mäns och Jerusalems församling i Herrens hus, framför den nya förgården. 6 *5 Mos 4:39, 1 Krön 29:11f, 2 Krön 14:11. Han sade: "Herre, våra fäders Gud, är inte du Gud i himlen och den som råder över alla hednafolkens riken? I din hand är kraft och makt, och det finns ingen som kan stå dig emot. 7 Var det inte du, vår Gud, som fördrev detta lands invånare för ditt folk Israel och gav landet åt din vän Abrahams efterkommande för evig tid? 8 De bodde där, och de byggde där en helgedom åt ditt namn och sade: 9 *1 Kung 8:33f, 37f, 2 Krön 6:24f, 7:13f. Om något ont kommer över oss, svärd, straffdom eller pest eller svält, så vill vi träda fram inför detta hus och inför ditt ansikte, för ditt namn är i detta hus, och vi vill ropa till dig ur djupet av vår bedrövelse, och du ska då höra och hjälpa.

10 *5 Mos 2:4f, 9, 19. Se nu folket från Ammon, Moab och Seirs bergsbygd! Det var deras område du inte lät Israel gå igenom när de kom från Egyptens land, utan de tog en omväg bort ifrån dem och förgjorde dem inte. 11 Se hur de nu lönar oss! De kommer för att driva bort oss från din besittning som du har gett oss till arvedel. 12 *Dom 11:27, Ps 59:10, 121:1, 123:1f. Ska inte du, vår Gud, hålla dom över dem? Vi förmår ingenting mot denna stora skara som kommer mot oss, och vi vet inte vad vi ska göra. Men våra ögon är vända till dig."

13 Hela Juda stod inför Herren med sina små barn, sina hustrur och söner. 14 Då kom Herrens Ande mitt i församlingen över Jahasiel, son till Sakarja, son till Benaja, son till Jegiel, son till Mattanja, en levit av Asafs söner. 15 Han sade: "Lyssna, alla ni i Juda och ni Jerusalems invånare och kung Joshafat! Så säger Herren till er: Var inte rädda eller modlösa inför denna stora skara, för striden är inte er utan Guds. 16 Gå i morgon ner mot dem. De drar då uppför Hassisbacken*20:16HassisbackenBetyder "blombacken". Troligen bäckravinen Hasason, som kommer upp genom bergsöknen väster om En-Gedi och mynnar ut en mil söder om Tekoa (ca 3 mil söder om Jerusalem)., och ni ska träffa på dem där dalen tar slut, framför Jeruels öken. 17 *2 Mos 14:13f. Men då är det inte ni som ska strida. Ni ska bara stiga fram och stå stilla, och ni ska få se Herrens frälsning. Han är med er, ni från Juda och Jerusalem. Var inte rädda eller modlösa. Gå i morgon ut mot dem, och Herren är med er."

18 Då böjde Joshafat sig ner med ansiktet mot marken, och alla Juda män och Jerusalems invånare föll ner för Herren och tillbad Herren. 19 Och de leviter som hörde till kehatiternas och koraiternas folk, stod upp och lovade Herren, Israels Gud, med hög och stark röst.

20 *Jes 7:9. Tidigt nästa morgon gick de ut till Tekoas öken. Och när de drog ut, steg Joshafat fram och sade: "Hör mig, ni av Juda och ni Jerusalems invånare! Stå fasta i tron på Herren er Gud så består ni, lita på hans profeter så lyckas ni." 21 *Ps 106:1, 136:1. Sedan han hade rådgjort med folket, ställde han upp sångare som skulle prisa Herren i helig skrud medan de drog ut framför den beväpnade hären. De skulle sjunga: "Tacka Herren, evig är hans nåd."

22 Och när de började att sjunga och lova, lät Herren ett angrepp komma bakifrån på folket från Ammon, Moab och Seirs bergsbygd som hade kommit mot Juda, och de blev slagna. 23 *Dom 7:22, 1 Sam 14:20, Hes 38:21. Folket från Ammon och Moab reste sig mot folket från Seirs bergsbygd för att förinta och förgöra dem, och när de hade gjort slut på folket från Seir hjälptes de åt att förgöra varandra.

24 När Juda män kom upp på höjden med utsikt över öknen vände de sig mot fiendeskaran, och se, där låg döda kroppar fallna på marken. Ingen hade kommit undan. 25 Och när Joshafat kom med sitt folk för att plundra och ta byte från dem, fann de bland dem både gods och kläder*20:25kläderAndra handskrifter: "döda kroppar". och värdesaker i stor mängd. De tog för sig så mycket att de inte kunde bära det, och de fortsatte plundringen i tre dagar, för bytet var stort. 26 Men på fjärde dagen samlades de i Berakadalen*20:26BerakadalenHebr. berachá betyder "välsignelse" eller "lovprisning".. Där välsignade de Herren, och därför fick platsen namnet Berakadalen, som den heter än i dag.

27 Därefter vände alla Juda och Jerusalems män, med Joshafat i spetsen, glada tillbaka till Jerusalem, eftersom Herren hade låtit dem glädja sig över sina fiender. 28 De drog in i Jerusalem med lyror, harpor och trumpeter och tågade till Herrens hus. 29 Och fruktan för Gud kom över alla länders riken, när de hörde att Herren hade stridit mot Israels fiender. 30 Joshafats rike hade nu ro, för hans Gud gav honom lugn på alla sidor.

31 *1 Kung 22:41. Så regerade Joshafat över Juda. Han var trettiofem år gammal när han blev kung, och han regerade tjugofem år i Jerusalem. Hans mor hette Asuba*20:31AsubaBetyder "den övergivna". och var dotter till Shilhi. 32 Han vandrade på sin far Asas väg och vek inte av från den, för han gjorde det som var rätt i Herrens ögon.

33 Men offerhöjderna avskaffades inte, och folket hade ännu inte vänt sina hjärtan till sina fäders Gud.

35 Därefter ingick Juda kung Joshafat förbund med Israels kung Ahasja*20:35AhasjaKung i nordriket Israel 853-852 f Kr. Se 1 Kung 22:52f, 2 Kung 1., trots att Ahasja levde ogudaktigt. 36 Joshafat kom överens med honom att bygga skepp som skulle gå till Tarshish. De byggde fartygen i Esjon-Geber. 37 *1 Kung 22:49. Då profeterade Elieser, Dodavahus son från Maresha, mot Joshafat och sade: "Eftersom du har ingått förbund med Ahasja ska Herren låta ditt företag bli om intet." Och skeppen led skeppsbrott så att de inte kunde gå till Tarshish.

1 It came to pass after this also, that the children of Moab, and the children of Ammon, and with them other beside the Ammonites, came against Jehoshaphat to battle. 2 Then there came some that told Jehoshaphat, saying, There cometh a great multitude against thee from beyond the sea on this side Syria; and, behold, they be in Hazazon-tamar, which is En-gedi. 3 And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the LORD, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.*20.3 himself: Heb. his face 4 And Judah gathered themselves together, to ask help of the LORD: even out of all the cities of Judah they came to seek the LORD.

5 And Jehoshaphat stood in the congregation of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the LORD, before the new court, 6 And said, O LORD God of our fathers, art not thou God in heaven? and rulest not thou over all the kingdoms of the heathen? and in thine hand is there not power and might, so that none is able to withstand thee? 7 Art not thou our God, who didst drive out the inhabitants of this land before thy people Israel, and gavest it to the seed of Abraham thy friend for ever?*20.7 who: Heb. thou 8 And they dwelt therein, and have built thee a sanctuary therein for thy name, saying, 9 If, when evil cometh upon us, as the sword, judgment, or pestilence, or famine, we stand before this house, and in thy presence, (for thy name is in this house,) and cry unto thee in our affliction, then thou wilt hear and help. 10 And now, behold, the children of Ammon and Moab and mount Seir, whom thou wouldest not let Israel invade, when they came out of the land of Egypt, but they turned from them, and destroyed them not; 11 Behold, I say, how they reward us, to come to cast us out of thy possession, which thou hast given us to inherit. 12 O our God, wilt thou not judge them? for we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon thee. 13 And all Judah stood before the LORD, with their little ones, their wives, and their children.

14 Then upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, came the Spirit of the LORD in the midst of the congregation; 15 And he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the LORD unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God’s. 16 To morrow go ye down against them: behold, they come up by the cliff of Ziz; and ye shall find them at the end of the brook, before the wilderness of Jeruel.*20.16 cliff: Heb. ascent*20.16 brook: or, valley 17 Ye shall not need to fight in this battle: set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of the LORD with you, O Judah and Jerusalem: fear not, nor be dismayed; to morrow go out against them: for the LORD will be with you. 18 And Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground: and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell before the LORD, worshipping the LORD. 19 And the Levites, of the children of the Kohathites, and of the children of the Korhites, stood up to praise the LORD God of Israel with a loud voice on high.

20 And they rose early in the morning, and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa: and as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem; Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper. 21 And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the LORD, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the LORD; for his mercy endureth for ever.*20.21 that…: Heb. praisers

22 And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten.*20.22 And when…: Heb. 26 And on the fourth day they assembled themselves in the valley of Berachah; for there they blessed the LORD: therefore the name of the same place was called, The valley of Berachah, unto this day.*20.26 Berachah: that is, blessing 27 Then they returned, every man of Judah and Jerusalem, and Jehoshaphat in the forefront of them, to go again to Jerusalem with joy; for the LORD had made them to rejoice over their enemies.*20.27 forefront: Heb. head 28 And they came to Jerusalem with psalteries and harps and trumpets unto the house of the LORD. 29 And the fear of God was on all the kingdoms of those countries, when they had heard that the LORD fought against the enemies of Israel. 30 So the realm of Jehoshaphat was quiet: for his God gave him rest round about.

31 And Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah: he was thirty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty and five years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi. 32 And he walked in the way of Asa his father, and departed not from it, doing that which was right in the sight of the LORD. 33 Howbeit the high places were not taken away: for as yet the people had not prepared their hearts unto the God of their fathers. 34 Now the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of Jehu the son of Hanani, who is mentioned in the book of the kings of Israel.*20.34 book of Jehu: Heb. words, etc*20.34 is mentioned: Heb. was made to ascend

35 And after this did Jehoshaphat king of Judah join himself with Ahaziah king of Israel, who did very wickedly: 36 And he joined himself with him to make ships to go to Tarshish: and they made the ships in Ezion-geber. 37 Then Eliezer the son of Dodavah of Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat, saying, Because thou hast joined thyself with Ahaziah, the LORD hath broken thy works. And the ships were broken, that they were not able to go to Tarshish.
