Se även 1 Kung 15. i Jerusalem. Hans mor hette Mikaja*13:2MikajaBetyder "Vem är som Herren?", variant av Maaka (1 Kung 15:2). Enligt Josefus var hon dotter till Absaloms dotter Tamar (2 Sam 13) och hennes man Uriel., Uriels dotter, från Gibea. Abia och Jerobeam låg i krig med varandra. 3 Abia började kriget med en här av tappra krigsmän, 400 000 utvalda män. Men Jerobeam ställde upp till strid mot honom med 800 000 utvalda tappra stridsmän.

4 Abia steg upp på berget Semarajim*13:4berget SemarajimOkänd plats, troligen norr om Jerusalem vid gränsen mot nordriket. i Efraims bergsbygd och sade: "Hör mig, Jerobeam och hela Israel! 5 *4 Mos 18:19, 2 Sam 7:12f. Men Jerobeam, Nebats son, Davids son Salomos tjänare, reste sig och gjorde uppror mot sin herre. 7 En skara löst folk slöt sig till honom, onda människor som blev för starka för Rehabeam, Salomos son. Rehabeam var ung och ängslig och kunde därför inte stå emot dem. 8 *1 Kung 12:28, 2 Krön 11:15. Och nu menar ni er kunna stå emot Herrens kungadöme som tillhör Davids söner, eftersom ni är en stor skara och har hos er de guldkalvar som Jerobeam gjorde till gudar åt er. 9 *2 Mos 28:41, 32:29, 1 Kung 12:31, 2 Krön 11:14f. Har ni inte drivit bort Herrens präster, Arons söner, och leviterna och själva gjort er präster, så som andra folk gör? Vem som än kommer med en ungtjur och sju baggar för att bli prästvigd får bli präst åt de gudar som inte är gudar.

10 Men vi har Herren till vår Gud, och vi har inte övergett honom. De präster som gör tjänst inför Herren är Arons söner, och leviterna sköter tempeltjänsten. 11 *2 Mos 25:30, 37, 29:38f, 30:34f, 3 Mos 24:6f, 2 Krön 2:4. De offrar åt Herren varje morgon och varje kväll brännoffer och väldoftande rökelse. Och de ordnar med bröd på bordet av rent guld och med den gyllene ljusstaken, så att lamporna på den lyser varje kväll, för vi håller vad Herren vår Gud har befallt oss att hålla. Men ni har övergett honom. 12 *4 Mos 10:9. Och se, Gud är med oss, i spetsen för oss, och vi har hans präster med larmtrumpeterna för att blåsa till strid mot er. Ni Israels barn, strid inte mot Herren, era fäders Gud, för ni kommer inte att lyckas."

13 Men Jerobeam hade låtit omringa dem och lagt ett bakhåll för att falla dem i ryggen. Så stod de nu mitt emot Juda män och hade sitt bakhåll bakom dem. 14 När Juda vände sig om och såg att de hade fiender både framför sig och bakom sig ropade de till Herren och prästerna blåste i trumpeterna. 15 Därefter höjde Juda män ett härskri, och när de gjorde så lät Gud Jerobeam och hela Israel bli slagna av Abia och Juda. 16 Israels barn flydde för Juda, och Gud gav dem i deras hand. 17 Sedan vållade Abia och hans folk ett stort manfall bland dem, så att 500 000 av Israels unga män blev slagna. 18 Alltså blev Israels barn kuvade vid den tiden, men Juda barn var starka, för de stödde sig på Herren, sina fäders Gud. 19 Abia förföljde Jerobeam och erövrade dessa städer från honom: Betel med underlydande orter, Jeshana med underlydande orter och Efron*13:19Betel … Jeshana … EfronOrter ca 1-2 mil norr om Jerusalem. Betel var nordrikets ena kultcentrum (1 Kung 12:29f, Amos 7:13). Det återgick senare till nordrikets kontroll (Amos 7:10f). med underlydande orter. 20 Sedan förmådde Jerobeam ingenting mer så länge Abia levde. Och Herren slog honom så att han dog.

21 Men Abia stärkte sin makt. Han tog sig fjorton hustrur och blev far till tjugotvå söner och sexton döttrar. 22 *2 Krön 9:29, 24:27. Vad som mer finns att säga om Abia, om hans bedrifter och annat som rör honom, det är skrivet i profeten Iddos utläggning.

4 And Abijah stood up upon mount Zemaraim, which is in mount Ephraim, and said, Hear me, thou Jeroboam, and all Israel; 5 Ought ye not to know that the LORD God of Israel gave the kingdom over Israel to David for ever, even to him and to his sons by a covenant of salt? 6 Yet Jeroboam the son of Nebat, the servant of Solomon the son of David, is risen up, and hath rebelled against his lord. 7 And there are gathered unto him vain men, the children of Belial, and have strengthened themselves against Rehoboam the son of Solomon, when Rehoboam was young and tenderhearted, and could not withstand them. 8 And now ye think to withstand the kingdom of the LORD in the hand of the sons of David; and ye be a great multitude, and there are with you golden calves, which Jeroboam made you for gods. 9 Have ye not cast out the priests of the LORD, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and have made you priests after the manner of the nations of other lands? so that whosoever cometh to consecrate himself with a young bullock and seven rams, the same may be a priest of them that are no gods.*13.9 to consecrate…: Heb. to fill his hand 10 But as for us, the LORD is our God, and we have not forsaken him; and the priests, which minister unto the LORD, are the sons of Aaron, and the Levites wait upon their business: 11 And they burn unto the LORD every morning and every evening burnt sacrifices and sweet incense: the shewbread also set they in order upon the pure table; and the candlestick of gold with the lamps thereof, to burn every evening: for we keep the charge of the LORD our God; but ye have forsaken him. 12 And, behold, God himself is with us for our captain, and his priests with sounding trumpets to cry alarm against you. O children of Israel, fight ye not against the LORD God of your fathers; for ye shall not prosper.

13 But Jeroboam caused an ambushment to come about behind them: so they were before Judah, and the ambushment was behind them. 14 And when Judah looked back, behold, the battle was before and behind: and they cried unto the LORD, and the priests sounded with the trumpets. 15 Then the men of Judah gave a shout: and as the men of Judah shouted, it came to pass, that God smote Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah. 16 And the children of Israel fled before Judah: and God delivered them into their hand. 17 And Abijah and his people slew them with a great slaughter: so there fell down slain of Israel five hundred thousand chosen men. 18 Thus the children of Israel were brought under at that time, and the children of Judah prevailed, because they relied upon the LORD God of their fathers. 19 And Abijah pursued after Jeroboam, and took cities from him, Beth-el with the towns thereof, and Jeshanah with the towns thereof, and Ephrain with the towns thereof. 20 Neither did Jeroboam recover strength again in the days of Abijah: and the LORD struck him, and he died.
