1 Men en man som hette Ananias sålde med sin hustru Safira en egendom 2 och smusslade sedan undan en del av betalningen, med hustruns vetskap. Han bar fram resten och lade det vid apostlarnas fötter.

3 *Joh 13:2. Då sade Petrus: "Ananias, varför har Satan fyllt ditt hjärta så att du ljög för den helige Ande och smusslade undan en del av pengarna för marken? 4 Var den inte din så länge du hade den? Och när den var såld, var inte pengarna dina? Varför bestämde du dig i ditt hjärta för detta? Du har inte ljugit för människor utan för Gud." 5 När Ananias hörde de orden föll han ner och dog, och stor fruktan kom över alla som hörde det. 6 De yngre männen kom och svepte honom, bar bort och begravde honom.

7 Omkring tre timmar senare kom hans hustru in utan att veta vad som hade hänt. 8 Petrus frågade henne: "Säg mig, sålde ni marken för det beloppet?" Hon svarade: "Ja, för det beloppet." 9 Då sade Petrus till henne: "Varför kom ni överens om att fresta Herrens Ande? Se, de som har begravt din man står vid dörren, och de ska bära bort dig också." 10 Och plötsligt föll hon död ner vid hans fötter. När de unga männen kom in fann de henne död, och de bar bort och begravde henne bredvid hennes man. 11 Stor fruktan kom över hela församlingen och över alla andra som hörde om det.

12 *Apg 3:11. Genom apostlarnas händer skedde många tecken och under bland folket, och de var alla tillsammans i Salomos pelarhall. 13 Ingen av de andra vågade ansluta sig till dem, men folket talade väl om dem.

14 *Apg 2:47, 6:7. Och ännu fler kom till tro på Herren, stora skaror av både män och kvinnor. 15 *Apg 19:11f. Man bar till och med ut de sjuka på gatorna och lade dem på bäddar och bårar för att åtminstone Petrus skugga skulle falla på någon av dem när han gick förbi. 16 Det kom också en stor skara från städerna runt omkring Jerusalem och förde med sig sjuka och sådana som plågades av orena andar, och alla blev botade.

17 *Apg 4:1f. Översteprästen och alla hans anhängare, det vill säga saddukeernas parti, fylldes av avund*5:17avundAnnan översättning: "trosiver" (grek. zélos, jfr engelskans "zeal").18 och grep apostlarna och satte dem i allmänt häkte. 19 *Apg 12:6f. Men på natten öppnade en Herrens ängel fängelseportarna och förde ut dem och sade: 20 *Joh 6:68, Apg 9:2, 13:26. "Gå och ställ er i templet och förkunna för folket allt om detta liv*5:20detta livDet nya livet i Kristus.!" 21 När de hörde det, gick de tidigt på morgonen till templet och började undervisa.

När översteprästen och hans anhängare kom dit sammankallade de Stora rådet, Israels folks hela äldsteråd, och skickade bud till häktet för att hämta apostlarna.*5:21kom ditSalen där Stora rådet sammanträdde låg i en annan ände av templet än Salomos pelarhall där undervisning brukade hållas (3:11, 5:12).22 Men när tjänarna kom fram, fann de dem inte i fängelset. De vände tillbaka och rapporterade: 23 "Vi såg att häktet var ordentligt låst och vakterna stod vid portarna, men när vi öppnade fann vi ingen därinne." 24 När tempelvaktens ledare och översteprästerna fick höra detta blev de villrådiga och undrade vad som kunde ha hänt. 25 Då kom någon och berättade för dem: "Männen som ni satte i fängelse står i templet och undervisar folket!" 26 Ledaren för tempelvakten gick då ut med tjänarna och hämtade dem utan att bruka våld, eftersom de var rädda att folket skulle stena dem.

27 När de nu blivit hämtade ställdes de inför Stora rådet, och översteprästen förhörde dem 28 *Matt 27:25, Apg 4:18. och sade: "Har vi inte strängt förbjudit er att undervisa i det namnet? Och nu har ni fyllt Jerusalem med er lära och vill att den mannens blod ska komma över oss*5:28den mannens blod ska komma över ossDvs att ledarna skulle anses skyldiga till Jesu död.!" 29 *Dan 3:18. Då svarade Petrus och apostlarna: "Man måste lyda Gud mer än människor. 30 *5 Mos 21:22f, Apg 2:23f, 3:13f. Våra fäders Gud har uppväckt Jesus, som ni hängde upp på trä och dödade.*5:30hängde upp på träKorsets trä (jfr 5 Mos 21:22, Gal 3:13).31 *Luk 24:47f, Hebr 2:10. Honom har Gud upphöjt till sin högra sida*5:31till sin högra sidaAnnan översättning: "med sin högra hand". som furste och frälsare för att ge Israel omvändelse och syndernas förlåtelse. 32 *Joh 15:26f. Vi är vittnen till detta, vi och den helige Ande som Gud har gett till dem som lyder honom."

33 *Apg 7:54. När rådsherrarna hörde detta blev de ursinniga och ville döda dem. 34 Men då reste sig en farisé i Stora rådet som hette Gamaliel*5:34GamalielPaulus lärare (22:3), berömd i judiska Mishna och Talmud för sin medmänsklighet., en laglärare som var aktad av hela folket. Han befallde att man skulle föra ut männen en stund 35 och sade sedan: "Israeliter, tänk er för vad ni gör med dessa män. 36 För en tid sedan kom Teudas*5:36TeudasJosefus nämner en senare upprorsledare med detta namn som dödades ca 45 e Kr. Namnet, som betyder "Guds gåva", motsvarade dock ett flertal vanliga judiska namn (Natanael, Mattias etc), och den Teudas som Gamaliel talar om kan ha varit verksam under de turbulenta åren efter Herodes död år 4 f Kr. och menade sig vara något, och han fick med sig omkring fyrahundra män. Men han blev avrättad, och alla som trodde på honom skingrades och försvann. 37 Efter honom kom Judas från Galileen, vid tiden för skattskrivningen*5:37Judas från Galileen, vid tiden för skattskrivningenRomarnas andra skattskrivning år 6-7 e Kr (till skillnad från "den första skattskrivningen", Luk 2:2) provocerade seloterna i Galileen till ett uppror som är omnämnt av Josefus. Det slogs ner brutalt av romarna.. Han fick folk att göra uppror och följa honom. Men även han gick under, och alla som trodde på honom skingrades. 38 Och nu säger jag er: Håll er borta från dessa män och låt dem gå. För om detta är människors påhitt eller verk, rinner det ut i sanden. 39 *Apg 26:14. Men är det av Gud, kan ni inte slå ner dem. Det skulle kunna visa sig att ni*5:39Det skulle kunna visa sig att niAnnan översättning: "Se till att ni inte". kämpar mot Gud."

De lät sig övertygas. 40 När de kallat in apostlarna igen, lät de piska dem och förbjöd dem att tala i Jesu namn. Sedan släpptes de fria. 41 *Matt 5:10f, Rom 5:3, Fil 1:29, 1 Petr 4:13f. Och apostlarna gick ut från Stora rådet, glada att de ansetts värdiga att bli förnedrade för Namnets skull. 42 Varje dag fortsatte de att undervisa i templet och i hemmen och förkunna evangeliet att Jesus är Messias.

1 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession, 2 And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles’ feet. 3 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? 4 Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God. 5 And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things. 6 And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him. 7 And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in. 8 And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much. 9 Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out. 10 Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband. 11 And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things.

12 And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people; (and they were all with one accord in Solomon’s porch. 13 And of the rest durst no man join himself to them: but the people magnified them. 14 And believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women.) 15 Insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them. 16 There came also a multitude out of the cities round about unto Jerusalem, bringing sick folks, and them which were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed every one.

17 Then the high priest rose up, and all they that were with him, (which is the sect of the Sadducees,) and were filled with indignation, 18 And laid their hands on the apostles, and put them in the common prison. 19 But the angel of the Lord by night opened the prison doors, and brought them forth, and said, 20 Go, stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life. 21 And when they heard that, they entered into the temple early in the morning, and taught. But the high priest came, and they that were with him, and called the council together, and all the senate of the children of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought. 22 But when the officers came, and found them not in the prison, they returned, and told, 23 Saying, The prison truly found we shut with all safety, and the keepers standing without before the doors: but when we had opened, we found no man within. 24 Now when the high priest and the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these things, they doubted of them whereunto this would grow. 25 Then came one and told them, saying, Behold, the men whom ye put in prison are standing in the temple, and teaching the people. 26 Then went the captain with the officers, and brought them without violence: for they feared the people, lest they should have been stoned. 27 And when they had brought them, they set them before the council: and the high priest asked them, 28 Saying, Did not we straitly command you that ye should not teach in this name? and, behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man’s blood upon us.

29 Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men. 30 The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree. 31 Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins. 32 And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.

33 When they heard that, they were cut to the heart, and took counsel to slay them. 34 Then stood there up one in the council, a Pharisee, named Gamaliel, a doctor of the law, had in reputation among all the people, and commanded to put the apostles forth a little space; 35 And said unto them, Ye men of Israel, take heed to yourselves what ye intend to do as touching these men. 36 For before these days rose up Theudas, boasting himself to be somebody; to whom a number of men, about four hundred, joined themselves: who was slain; and all, as many as obeyed him, were scattered, and brought to nought. 37 After this man rose up Judas of Galilee in the days of the taxing, and drew away much people after him: he also perished; and all, even as many as obeyed him, were dispersed. 38 And now I say unto you, Refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought: 39 But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God. 40 And to him they agreed: and when they had called the apostles, and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.

41 And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name. 42 And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.
