1 *Apg 27:26. När vi väl var räddade fick vi veta att ön hette Malta.*28:1MaltaGrek. Melíte. Det fanns två öar som kallades Melite, dels Malta och dels ön Kefallenia vid Greklands västkust. Traditionen pekar ut Malta som Paulus landningsplats.2 Lokalbefolkningen visade oss en ovanligt stor vänlighet. De tände en eld och tog hand om oss alla, eftersom det hade börjat regna och var kallt.

3 Paulus hade just samlat ett fång kvistar och lagt på elden när en huggorm kröp ut på grund av hettan och högg sig fast i hans hand. 4 När de infödda såg ormen hänga från hans hand, sade de till varandra: "Den där mannen är säkert en mördare. 7 I trakten runt den platsen fanns det lantgårdar som tillhörde Publius, stormannen på ön. Han tog vänligt emot oss som sina gäster i tre dagar. 8 Publius far låg just då sjuk i feber och svår diarré*28:8svår diarréAnnan översättning: "dysenteri", en tarmsjukdom som ofta var dödlig före antibiotikans tid.. Paulus gick in till honom, bad och lade händerna på honom och botade honom. 9 Efter den händelsen kom också andra sjuka på ön till honom och blev botade. 10 De visade oss sin uppskattning på många sätt, och när vi skulle segla försåg de oss med vad vi behövde.

11 Efter tre månader seglade vi ut med ett skepp som hade övervintrat vid ön. Det kom från Alexandria och hade Tvillingarna*28:11TvillingarnaCastor och Pollux, Jupiters tvillingsöner, ansågs vara sjömännens skyddsgudar. som galjonsfigur. 12 Vi lade till vid Syrakusa och stannade där i tre dagar. 13 Därifrån följde vi kusten och kom till Regium. En dag senare fick vi sydlig vind, och den andra dagen kom vi till Puteoli. 14 Där fann vi bröder som bjöd in oss att stanna hos dem i sju dagar. Och så fortsatte vi till Rom.

15 Bröderna där hade fått besked om oss, och de kom ut ända till Forum Appii och Tres Tabernae*28:15Forum Appii och Tres TabernaeTvå mindre samhällen vid Via Appia, ca 50-60 km söder om Rom. för att möta oss. Då Paulus fick se dem tackade han Gud och fick nytt mod. 16 *Apg 24:23. När vi kom fram till Rom fick Paulus tillstånd att bo för sig själv tillsammans med den soldat som skulle bevaka honom.

17 *Apg 25:8. Tre dagar senare kallade han till sig de ledande bland judarna, och när de var samlade sade han till dem: "Bröder, jag har inte gjort något ont mot vårt folk eller våra fäderneärvda seder. Trots det blev jag fängslad i Jerusalem och utlämnad i romarnas händer. 18 *Apg 25:25, 26:32. När de hade förhört mig ville de frige mig, eftersom jag inte var skyldig till något som förtjänade döden. 19 *Apg 25:11. Men judarna var emot det, och då var jag tvungen att vädja till kejsaren, dock utan att anklaga mitt folk. 20 *Apg 23:6. Så det är därför jag kallat hit er för att träffa er och tala med er. Det är nämligen för Israels hopp som jag bär dessa bojor."

21 De svarade honom: "Vi har inte fått något brev om dig från Judeen, och ingen av bröderna som kommit har berättat eller sagt något ont om dig. 22 *Luk 2:34, Apg 24:5. Men vi vill gärna höra från dig vad du tänker, för vi vet att den här sekten blir motsagd överallt."

23 *Apg 26:22. De bestämde en dag för honom, och då kom ännu fler till hans bostad. Från morgon till kväll förklarade han för dem och vittnade om Guds rike och försökte övertyga dem om Jesus utifrån både Mose lag och profeterna. 24 *Apg 17:4. Vissa lät sig övertygas av hans ord, men andra ville inte tro. 25 *2 Petr 1:21. När de inte kunde komma överens skildes de åt, efter att Paulus hade sagt detta enda ord: "Den helige Ande talade rätt genom profeten Jesaja till era fäder 26 *Matt 13:14f. när han sade:*28:26fJes 6:9f.

Gå till detta folk och säg:

och ni ska se men inte inse,

27 för detta folks hjärta är förhärdat.

så att de inte ser med ögonen

eller förstår med hjärtat

och vänder om

så att jag får hela dem.

30 I två hela år*28:30I två hela årUnder sin tid i husarrest skrev Paulus Efesierbrevet, Kolosserbrevet och Filemonbrevet, troligen vid ungefär samma tillfälle. Längre fram under samma tid skrev han även Filipperbrevet. Efter de två åren blev Paulus antingen ställd inför rätta och frikänd eller också togs målet aldrig upp. Ett mål inför kejsaren kunde nämligen avskrivas om det inte hade kommit upp till behandling inom två år. Efter de två åren i fångenskap gjorde Paulus enligt traditionen nya resor, först till Spanien och Kreta och därefter till Grekland där han skrev Titusbrevet och Första Timoteusbrevet. Till sist återvände han till Rom, där han skrev Andra Timoteusbrevet innan han led martyrdöden under kejsar Nero i mitten eller andra halvan av 60-talet e Kr. bodde Paulus i den bostad som han hade hyrt, och han tog emot alla som kom till honom. 31 Han predikade Guds rike och undervisade med stor frimodighet om Herren Jesus Kristus utan att bli hindrad.

1 And when they were escaped, then they knew that the island was called Melita. 2 And the barbarous people shewed us no little kindness: for they kindled a fire, and received us every one, because of the present rain, and because of the cold. 3 And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks, and laid them on the fire, there came a viper out of the heat, and fastened on his hand. 4 And when the barbarians saw the venomous beast hang on his hand, they said among themselves, No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he hath escaped the sea, yet vengeance suffereth not to live. 5 And he shook off the beast into the fire, and felt no harm. 6 Howbeit they looked when he should have swollen, or fallen down dead suddenly: but after they had looked a great while, and saw no harm come to him, they changed their minds, and said that he was a god.

7 In the same quarters were possessions of the chief man of the island, whose name was Publius; who received us, and lodged us three days courteously. 8 And it came to pass, that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and of a bloody flux: to whom Paul entered in, and prayed, and laid his hands on him, and healed him. 9 So when this was done, others also, which had diseases in the island, came, and were healed: 10 Who also honoured us with many honours; and when we departed, they laded us with such things as were necessary.

11 And after three months we departed in a ship of Alexandria, which had wintered in the isle, whose sign was Castor and Pollux. 12 And landing at Syracuse, we tarried there three days. 13 And from thence we fetched a compass, and came to Rhegium: and after one day the south wind blew, and we came the next day to Puteoli: 14 Where we found brethren, and were desired to tarry with them seven days: and so we went toward Rome. 15 And from thence, when the brethren heard of us, they came to meet us as far as Appii forum, and The three taverns: whom when Paul saw, he thanked God, and took courage. 16 And when we came to Rome, the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard: but Paul was suffered to dwell by himself with a soldier that kept him.

17 And it came to pass, that after three days Paul called the chief of the Jews together: and when they were come together, he said unto them, Men and brethren, though I have committed nothing against the people, or customs of our fathers, yet was I delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans. 18 Who, when they had examined me, would have let me go, because there was no cause of death in me. 19 But when the Jews spake against it, I was constrained to appeal unto Cæsar; not that I had ought to accuse my nation of. 20 For this cause therefore have I called for you, to see you, and to speak with you: because that for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain. 21 And they said unto him, We neither received letters out of Judæa concerning thee, neither any of the brethren that came shewed or spake any harm of thee. 22 But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest: for as concerning this sect, we know that every where it is spoken against. 23 And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening. 24 And some believed the things which were spoken, and some believed not. 25 And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers, 26 Saying, Go unto this people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive: 27 For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. 28 Be it known therefore unto you, that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles, and that they will hear it. 29 And when he had said these words, the Jews departed, and had great reasoning among themselves.

30 And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house, and received all that came in unto him, 31 Preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence, no man forbidding him.
