1 Segui a caridade; contudo aspirai aos dons espirituais, porém sobre todos ao de profecia.2 O que fala em língua, não fala a homens, senão a Deus; pois ninguém o entende, mas em espírito fala mistérios.3 Porém aquele que profetiza, fala a homens para edificação, exortação e consolação.4 Aquele que fala em língua, edifica-se a si mesmo; mas o que profetiza, edifica a igreja.5 Quero que todos vós faleis em línguas, mas antes que profetizeis; maior é aquele que profetiza do que aquele que fala em línguas, a não ser que as interprete, para que a igreja receba edificação.6 Agora, porém, irmãos, se eu for ter convosco, falando em línguas, de que vos aproveitarei se não vos falar por meio de revelação, ou de ciência, ou de profecia, ou de instrução?7 Até as coisas inanimadas quando emitem som, quer flauta quer cítara, se não fizerem diferença de sons, como se conhecerá o que se toca na flauta ou na cítara?8 Porque se a trombeta der um som incerto, quem se preparará para a batalha?9 Assim também vós, se pela língua não proferirdes discurso fácil de se entender, como se conhecerá o que se fala? pois estareis falando ao ar.10 Há, como acontece, tantas espécies de vozes no mundo, e nenhuma há sem significação.11 Se, portanto, eu não souber a significação da voz, serei um estrangeiro para aquele que fala; e aquele que fala, será um estrangeiro para mim.12 Assim também vós, desde que estais desejosos de dons espirituais, procurai abundar neles, para a edificação da igreja.13 Por isso quem fala em língua, ore para que a interprete.14 Pois se eu orar em língua, o meu espírito ora, mas o meu entendimento não dá fruto.15 Que farei, então? orarei com o espírito, e orarei também com o entendimento; cantarei salmos com o espírito, e cantarei também com o entendimento.16 De outra forma se bendisseres com o espírito, como dirá o amém às tuas ações de graças aquele que ocupa o lugar de indouto, visto que não sabe o que dizes?17 tu, na verdade, dás bem as graças, mas o outro não é edificado.18 Dou graças a Deus que falo em línguas mais que todos vós;19 mas na igreja eu antes quero falar cinco palavras com o meu entendimento, para que instrua também a outros, do que dez mil palavras em língua.20 Irmãos, não vos torneis meninos no juízo. Na malícia, contudo, sede crianças; mas no juízo tornai-vos homens feitos.21 Na Lei está escrito: Por homens de outras línguas e por lábios de estrangeiros falarei a este povo, e nem assim me ouvirá, diz o Senhor.22 Assim línguas são para sinal, não aos que crêem, mas aos incrédulos; a profecia, porém, não aos incrédulos, mas aos que crêem.23 Se, portanto, a igreja inteira se reunir num mesmo lugar, e todos falarem em línguas, e entrarem indoutos ou incrédulos, não dirão que estais loucos?24 Se, porém, todos profetizarem, e entrar algum incrédulo ou indouto, por todos é convencido, por todos é julgado.25 Os segredos do seu coração se tornam manifestos; e assim, caindo com o rosto em terra, adorará a Deus, declarando que realmente Deus está entre vós.26 Que farei, pois, irmãos? Quando vos congregais, cada um tem salmo, tem ensino, tem revelação, tem língua, tem interpretação; que tudo se faça para edificação.27 Se alguém falar em língua, não falem senão dois ou, quando muito, três, e cada um por sua vez; haja um que interprete;28 mas se não houver intérprete, esteja calado na igreja, e fale consigo e com Deus.29 Falem os profetas, dois ou três, e os outros julguem;30 se for dada alguma revelação a outrem que estiver sentado, cale-se o primeiro.31 Pois todos, um após outro, podeis profetizar, para que todos aprendam e todos sejam exortados.32 Os espíritos dos profetas estão sujeitos aos profetas,33 porque Deus não é Deus de confusão, mas de paz. Como em todas as igrejas dos santos,34 as mulheres estejam caladas nas igrejas; pois não lhes é permitido falar, mas estejam em sujeição, como também diz a Lei.35 Se, porém, querem aprender alguma coisa, perguntem-na em casa a seus maridos; porque é vergonhoso para uma mulher o falar na igreja.36 Porventura saiu de vós a palavra de Deus, ou não veio ela senão para vós?37 Se alguém se considera profeta ou espiritual, reconheça que as coisas que vos escrevo são mandamentos do Senhor;38 mas se alguém desconhece, é ele desconhecido.39 Assim, meus irmãos, aspirai a profetizar, e não proibais o falar em línguas;40 mas faça-se tudo com decência e ordem.

1 Keep on pursuing love, and keep on desiring spiritual gifts, especially the ability to prophesy.2 For the person who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands him, because he is speaking secrets in the Spirit.3 But the person who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding, encouragement, and comfort.4 The person who speaks in a tongue builds himself up, but the person who prophesies builds the church up.5 Now I wish that all of you could speak in tongues, but especially that you could prophesy. The person who prophesies is more important than the person who speaks in a tongue, unless he interprets it so that the church may be built up.6 Indeed, brothers, if I come to you speaking in tongues, what good will I be to you unless I speak to you in some revelation, knowledge, prophecy, or teaching?7 In the same way, lifeless instruments like the flute or harp produce sounds. But if there's no difference in the notes, how can a person tell what tune is being played?8 For example, if a bugle doesn't sound a clear call, who will get ready for battle?9 In the same way, unless you speak an intelligible message with your tongue, how will anyone know what is being said? You'll be talking into the air!10 There are, I suppose, many different languages in the world, yet none of them is without meaning.11 If I don't know the meaning of the language, I will be a foreigner to the speaker and the speaker will be a foreigner to me.12 In the same way, since you're so desirous of spiritual gifts, you must keep on desiring them for the upbuilding of the church.13 Therefore, the person who speaks in a tongue should pray for the ability to interpret it.14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is not productive.15 What does this mean? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind. I will sing psalms with my spirit, but I will also sing psalms with my mind.16 Otherwise, if you say a blessing with your spirit, how can an otherwise uneducated person say "Amen" to your thanksgiving, since he does not know what you're saying?17 It's good for you to give thanks, but it does not build up the other person.18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.19 But in church I would rather speak five words with my mind to instruct others than 10,000 words in a tongue.20 Brothers, stop being children in your thinking. In evil be infants, but in thinking be adults.21 In the law it is written, "Through people of strange tonguesand through the mouths of foreigners I will speak to this people,but even then they will not listen to me,"declares the Lord.22 Tongues, then, are meant to be a sign, not for believers, but for unbelievers, while prophecy is meant, not for unbelievers, but for believers.23 Now if the whole church gathers in the same place and everyone is speaking in tongues, when uneducated people or unbelievers come in, they will say that you are out of your mind, won't they?24 But if everyone is prophesying, when an unbeliever or an uneducated person comes in he will be convicted by all and examined by all.25 The secrets in his heart will become known, and so he will bow down to the ground and worship God, declaring, "God is truly among you!"26 What, then, does this mean, brothers? When you gather, everyone has a psalm, teaching, revelation, tongue, or interpretation. Everything must be done for upbuilding.27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, only two or three at the most should do so, one at a time, and somebody must interpret.28 If an interpreter is not present, he should remain silent in the church and speak to himself and God.29 Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should weigh carefully what is said.30 If a revelation is made to another person who is seated, the first person should be silent.31 For everyone can prophesy in turn, so that everyone can be instructed and everyone can be encouraged.32 The spirits of prophets are subject to the prophets,33 for God is not a God of disorder but of peace.As in all the churches of the saints,34 the women must keep silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak out, but must place themselves in submission, as the law also says.35 If they want to learn anything, they should ask their own husbands at home, for it is inappropriate for a woman to speak out in church.36 Did God's word originate with you? Are you the only people it has reached?37 If anyone thinks he is a prophet or a spiritual person, he must acknowledge that what I am writing to you is the Lord's command.38 But if anyone ignores this, he should be ignored.39 Therefore, my brothers, desire the ability to prophesy, and do not prevent others from speaking in tongues.40 But everything must be done in a proper and orderly way.
