1 Não quero, irmãos, que ignoreis que nossos pais estiveram todos debaixo da nuvem e todos passaram pelo mar,2 e todos em Moisés foram batizados na nuvem e no mar,3 e comeram todos do mesmo manjar espiritual,4 e beberam todos da mesma bebida espiritual, pois beberam duma rocha espiritual que os acompanhava, a qual rocha era Cristo.5 Contudo da maior parte deles Deus não se agradou, e assim foram prostrados no deserto.6 Ora estas coisas foram feitas em figura para nós, a fim de não cobiçarmos coisas más, assim como eles também cobiçaram.7 Nem vos torneis idólatras, como alguns deles, conforme está escrito: O povo sentou-se a comer e a beber, e levantou-se a folgar.8 Nem cometamos fornicação, como alguns deles cometeram, e caíram em um só dia vinte e três mil.9 Nem tentemos o Senhor, como alguns deles o tentaram, e foram mortos pelas serpentes.10 Nem murmureis, como alguns deles murmuraram, e pereceram pelo destruidor.11 Ora estas coisas lhes aconteciam como figuras, e foram escritas para advertência de nós outros, a quem os fins dos séculos têm chegado.12 Por isso aquele que pensa estar em pé, veja não caia.13 Não vos tem sobrevindo tentação que não seja comum aos homens; mas Deus é fiel, o qual não permitirá que sejais tentados além das vossas forças, mas também com a tentação proverá o meio de saída para poderdes suportá-la.14 Por isso, meus amados, fugi da idolatria.15 Falo como a sensatos; julgai vós o que digo.16 O cálice de bênção que abençoamos, não é a comunhão do sangue de Cristo? O pão que partimos, não é a comunhão do corpo de Cristo?17 Pois nós, que somos muitos, somos um só pão, um só corpo; porque todos participamos do único pão.18 Considerai a Israel segundo a carne; não são participantes do altar aqueles que comem dos sacrifícios?19 Que afirmo, então? que o que é sacrificado aos ídolos é alguma coisa? ou que o ídolo é alguma coisa?20 Pelo contrário afirmo que as coisas que eles sacrificam, as sacrificam a demônios, e não a Deus; e não quero que vós tenhais comunhão com os demônios.21 Não podeis beber do cálice do Senhor e do cálice dos demônios; não podeis participar da mesa do Senhor e da mesa dos demônios.22 Queremos, porventura, provocar a zelos o Senhor? acaso somos mais fortes do que ele?23 Todas as coisas são lícitas, mas nem todas as coisas convêm; todas são lícitas, mas nem todas edificam.24 Ninguém procure o seu proveito, mas o de outrem.25 Comei de tudo o que se vende no mercado, nada perguntando por causa da vossa consciência;26 pois do Senhor é a terra e a sua plenitude.27 Se algum dos incrédulos vos convida, e quereis ir, comei de tudo o que vos põe diante, nada perguntando por causa da consciência.28 Mas se alguém vos disser: Isto foi oferecido em sacrifício, não comais por causa daquele que vo-lo advertiu, e por causa da consciência;29 consciência, digo, não a tua, mas a do outro. Pois a que fim é minha liberdade julgada pela consciência alheia?30 Se eu participo com gratidão, por que sou vilipendiado por aquilo por que dou graças?31 Portanto se comeis, ou bebeis, ou fazeis qualquer outra coisa, fazei tudo para glória de Deus.32 Não vos torneis causa de tropeço nem para os judeus, nem para os gregos, nem para a igreja de Deus,33 assim como eu também em tudo quero agradar a todos, não procurando o meu próprio proveito, mas o de todos, para que sejam salvos.

1 For I do not want you to be ignorant, brothers, of the fact that all of our ancestors were under the cloud, and they all went through the sea,2 and they all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea,3 and they all ate the same spiritual food,4 and they all drank the same spiritual drink, for they continually drank from the spiritual Rock that went with them, and that Rock was Christ.5 But God wasn't pleased with most of them, and so they were struck down in the wilderness.6 Now these things became examples for us so that we won't set our hearts on evil as they did.7 Let us stop being idolaters, as some of them were. As it is written, "The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to play."8 Let us stop sinning sexually, as some of them were doing, and on a single day 23,000 fell dead.9 Let us stop putting the Lord to the test, as some of them were doing, and were destroyed by snakes.10 You must stop complaining, as some of them were doing, and were destroyed by the destroying angel.11 These things happened to them to serve as an example, and they were written down as a warning for us in whom the climax of the ages has been realized.12 Therefore, the person who thinks he is standing securely should watch out that he does not fall.13 No temptation has overtaken you that is unusual for human beings. But God is faithful, and he will not allow you to be tempted beyond your strength. Instead, along with the temptation he will also provide a way out, so that you may be able to endure it.14 And so, my dear friends, keep on running away from idolatry.15 I am talking to sensible people. Decide for yourselves what I am saying.16 The cup of blessing that we bless is a sign of our sharing in the blood of Christ, isn't it? The bread that we break is a sign of our sharing in the body of Christ, isn't it?17 Because there is one loaf, we who are many are one body, because all of us partake of the one loaf.18 Look at the Israelites from a human point of view. Those who eat the sacrifices share in what is on the altar, don't they?19 Am I suggesting that an offering made to idols means anything, or that an idol itself means anything?20 Hardly! What they offer, they offer to demons and not to God, and I do not want you to become partners with demons.21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot eat at the table of the Lord and at the table of demons.22 Are we trying to provoke the Lord to jealousy? We are not stronger than he is, are we?23 Everything is permissible, but not everything is helpful. Everything is permissible, but not everything builds up.24 No one should seek his own welfare, but rather his neighbor's.25 Eat anything that is sold in the meat market without raising any question about it on the ground of conscience,26 for "the earth and everything in it belong to the Lord."27 If an unbeliever invites you to his house and you wish to go, eat whatever is set before you, raising no question on the ground of conscience.28 However, if someone says to you, "This was offered in sacrifice," don't eat it, both out of consideration for the one who told you and because of conscience.29 I mean, of course, his conscience, not yours. For why should my freedom be judged by someone else's conscience?30 If I eat with thankfulness, why should I be denounced because of what I am thankful for?31 Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything to the glory of God.32 Stop being stumbling blocks to Jews or Greeks or to the church of God,33 just as I myself try to please everybody in every way, not looking for my own advantage but for that of many people, so that they might be saved.
