1 Ajuntaram os filisteus todas as suas hostes em Afeque, e acamparam-se os israelitas junto à fonte em Jezreel.2 Os régulos dos filisteus estavam marchando com as suas centenas e milhares; e Davi e seus homens marchavam na retaguarda com Aquis.3 Perguntaram os régulos dos filisteus: Que fazem aqui estes hebreus? Aquis respondeu-lhes: Este não é Davi, servo de Saul, rei de Israel, que tem estado comigo alguns dias ou alguns anos, sem que lhe tenha achado culpa alguma desde o dia em que se refugiou para mim até o dia de hoje?4 Porém os régulos dos filisteus se iraram contra ele, e disseram a Aquis: Faze voltar este homem, para que torne ao lugar em que o puseste, e não desça conosco à batalha, a fim de que não se faça nosso adversário no combate. Com que se reconcilaria com o seu senhor? não seria, porventura, com as cabeças destes homens?5 Acaso este não é Davi, de quem cantando diziam nas danças: Saul matou os seus milhares, E Davi, as suas dezenas de milhares?6 Aquis chamou a Davi, e disse-lhe: Pela vida de Jeová, tu tens sido reto, e é bom aos meus olhos o teu sair e entrar comigo no arraial, pois não tenho achado mal algum em ti desde o dia em que vieste ter comigo até o dia de hoje; porém tu não agradas aos régulos.7 Agora volta e vai-te em paz, para não desagradares aos régulos dos filisteus.8 Perguntou Davi a Aquis: Mas que tenho eu feito? que tens achado no teu servo desde o dia em que te apareci até o dia de hoje, para que eu não vá pelejar contra os inimigos do rei meu senhor?9 Respondeu Aquis a Davi: Sei que és bom aos meus olhos, como um anjo de Deus: todavia os régulos dos filisteus disseram: Ele não há de subir conosco à batalha.10 Agora levanta-te de manhã cedo, tu e os servos do teu senhor que vieram contigo, e tendo-vos levantado de manhã cedo, parti logo que haja luz.11 Levantou-se Davi de madrugada com seus homens, para partirem pela manhã e voltarem para a terra dos filisteus. Os filisteus, porém, subiram a Jezreel.

1 The Philistines gathered all their troops at Aphek. The Israelites camped by the spring in Jezreel Valley.2 The five Philistine kings marched with units of a hundred and of a thousand men. David and his men marched in the rear with King Achish.3 The Philistine commanders saw them and asked: »What are these Hebrews doing here?« Achish answered: »This is David. He is the man who ran away from King Saul of Israel. He has been with me for more than a year. He has done nothing I can find fault with since the day he came to me.«4 The Philistine commanders were angry with Achish and said to him: »Send that fellow back to the town you gave him. Do not let him go into battle with us. He might turn against us during the fight. What better way is there for him to win back his master’s favor than by causing the death of our men?5 »This is David, the one about whom the women sang, as they danced: Saul has killed thousands, but David has killed tens of thousands.«6 Achish called David and said: »I swear by the living God of Israel that you have been loyal to me. I would be pleased to have you go with me and fight in this battle. I have found no fault in you from the day you came to me. But the other kings do not approve of you.7 »Go home in peace. Do not do anything that would displease them.«8 David answered: »What have I done wrong? As you say, you have not found any fault in me since the day I started serving you. Why should I not go with you, my master and king, and fight your enemies?«9 »I agree,« Achish replied. »I consider you as loyal as an angel of God. But the other kings say you may not go with us into battle.10 »Tomorrow morning all of you who left Saul and came over to me must get up early and leave at first light.«11 David and his men started out early the following morning. They went back to Philistia. The Philistines went on to Jezreel.
