1 Depois disso, houve uma festa dos judeus, e Jesus subiu a Jerusalém.2 Há em Jerusalém, junto à porta das Ovelhas, um tanque, chamado em hebraico Betesda, que tem cinco pórticos.3 Nestes pórticos jazia um grande número de enfermos, de cegos, de coxos e de paralíticos, que esperavam o movimento da água.4 {Pois de tempos em tempos um anjo do Senhor descia ao tanque e a água se punha em movimento. E o primeiro que entrasse no tanque, depois da agitação da água, ficava curado de qualquer doença que tivesse.}5 Estava ali um homem enfermo havia trinta e oito anos.6 Vendo-o deitado e sabendo que já havia muito tempo que estava enfermo, perguntou-lhe Jesus: Queres ficar curado?7 O enfermo respondeu-lhe: Senhor, não tenho ninguém que me ponha no tanque, quando a água é agitada; enquanto vou, já outro desceu antes de mim.8 Ordenou-lhe Jesus: Levanta-te, toma o teu leito e anda.9 No mesmo instante, aquele homem ficou curado, tomou o seu leito e foi andando. Ora, aquele dia era sábado.10 E os judeus diziam ao homem curado: E sábado, não te é permitido carregar o teu leito.11 Respondeu-lhes ele: Aquele que me curou disse: Toma o teu leito e anda.12 Perguntaram-lhe eles: Quem é o homem que te disse: Toma o teu leito e anda?13 O que havia sido curado, porém, não sabia quem era, porque Jesus se havia retirado da multidão que estava naquele lugar.14 Mais tarde, Jesus o achou no templo e lhe disse: Eis que ficaste são; já não peques, para não te acontecer coisa pior.15 Aquele homem foi então contar aos judeus que fora Jesus quem o havia curado.16 Por esse motivo, os judeus perseguiam Jesus, porque fazia esses milagres no dia de sábado.17 Mas ele lhes disse: Meu Pai continua agindo até agora, e eu ajo também.18 Por esta razão os judeus, com maior ardor, procuravam tirar-lhe a vida, porque não somente violava o repouso do sábado, mas afirmava ainda que Deus era seu Pai e se fazia igual a Deus.19 Jesus tomou a palavra e disse-lhes: Em verdade, em verdade vos digo: o Filho de si mesmo não pode fazer coisa alguma; ele só faz o que vê fazer o Pai; e tudo o que o Pai faz, o faz também semelhantemente o Filho.20 Pois o Pai ama o Filho e mostra-lhe tudo o que faz; e maiores obras do que esta lhe mostrará, para que fiqueis admirados.21 Com efeito, como o Pai ressuscita os mortos e lhes dá vida, assim também o Filho dá vida a quem ele quer.22 Assim também o Pai não julga ninguém, mas entregou todo o julgamento ao Filho.23 Desse modo, todos honrarão o Filho, bem como honram o Pai. Aquele que não honra o Filho, não honra o Pai, que o enviou.24 Em verdade, em verdade vos digo: quem ouve a minha palavra e crê naquele que me enviou tem a vida eterna e não incorre na condenação, mas passou da morte para a vida.25 Em verdade, em verdade vos digo: vem a hora, e já está aí, em que os mortos ouvirão a voz do Filho de Deus; e os que a ouvirem viverão.26 Pois como o Pai tem a vida em si mesmo, assim também deu ao Filho o ter a vida em si mesmo,27 e lhe conferiu o poder de julgar, porque é o Filho do Homem.28 Não vos maravilheis disso, porque vem a hora em que todos os que se acham nos sepulcros sairão deles ao som de sua voz:29 os que praticaram o bem irão para a ressurreição da vida, e aqueles que praticaram o mal ressuscitarão para serem condenados.30 De mim mesmo não posso fazer coisa alguma. Julgo como ouço; e o meu julgamento é justo, porque não busco a minha vontade, mas a vontade daquele que me enviou.31 Se eu der testemunho de mim mesmo, não é digno de fé o meu testemunho.32 Há outro que dá testemunho de mim, e sei que é digno de fé o testemunho que dá de mim.33 Vós enviastes mensageiros a João, e ele deu testemunho da verdade.34 Não invoco, porém, o testemunho de homem algum. Digo-vos essas coisas, a fim de que sejais salvos.35 João era uma lâmpada que arde e ilumina; vós, porém, só por uma hora quisestes alegrar-vos com a sua luz.36 Mas tenho maior testemunho do que o de João, porque as obras que meu Pai me deu para executar - essas mesmas obras que faço - testemunham a meu respeito que o Pai me enviou.37 E o Pai que me enviou, ele mesmo deu testemunho de mim. Vós nunca ouvistes a sua voz nem vistes a sua face...38 e não tendes a sua palavra permanente em vós, pois não credes naquele que ele enviou.39 Vós perscrutais as Escrituras, julgando encontrar nelas a vida eterna. Pois bem! São elas mesmas que dão testemunho de mim.40 E vós não quereis vir a mim para que tenhais a vida...41 Não espero a minha glória dos homens,42 mas sei que não tendes em vós o amor de Deus.43 Vim em nome de meu Pai, mas não me recebeis. Se vier outro em seu próprio nome, haveis de recebê-lo...44 Como podeis crer, vós que recebeis a glória uns dos outros, e não buscais a glória que é só de Deus?45 Não julgueis que vos hei de acusar diante do Pai; há quem vos acusa: Moisés, no qual colocais a vossa esperança.46 Pois se crêsseis em Moisés, certamente creríeis em mim, porque ele escreveu a meu respeito.47 Mas, se não acreditais nos seus escritos, como acreditareis nas minhas palavras?

1 After these things there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.2 Now in Jerusalem there is a pool by the sheep [gate], which in Hebrew is called, Bethesda, having five porches.3 In these lay a great multitude of those who were sick, blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water.4 For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and troubled the water; whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatever disease he had.5 And a certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years.6 When Jesus saw him lying [there] and knew that he had been now a long time [in that case], he said unto him, Dost thou desire to be made whole?7 The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man when the water is troubled to put me into the pool, but while I am coming, another steps down before me.8 Jesus said unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.9 And immediately the man was made whole and took up his bed and walked, and on that day was the sabbath.10 The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day; it is not lawful for thee to carry [thy] bed.11 He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed and walk.12 Then they asked him, Who is the man that said unto thee, Take up thy bed and walk?13 And he that was healed did not know who it was; for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in [that] place.14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole; sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.15 The man departed and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him whole.16 And for this reason the Jews persecuted Jesus and sought to kill him: because he had done these things on a sabbath.17 But Jesus answered them, My Father works until now, and I work.18 Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath but also called God his own Father, making himself equal with God.19 Then Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself but what he sees the Father do; for all that he does, this also the Son does together with [him].20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all the things that he does, and he will show him greater works than these that ye may marvel.21 For as the Father raises up the dead and gives [them] life; even so the Son gives life unto whom he will.22 For the Father judges no man but has committed all judgment unto the Son23 that everyone should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that does not honour the Son does not honour the Father who has sent him.24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that hears my word and believes him that sent me has eternal life and shall not come into judgment but has passed from death unto life.25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour shall come, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God, and they that hear shall live.26 For as the Father has life in himself, so has he given to the Son to have life in himself27 and has also given him power [and authority] to execute judgment because he is Son of man.28 Marvel not at this, for an hour shall come when all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,29 and those that have done good shall come forth unto the resurrection of life; but those that have done evil, unto the resurrection of judgment.30 I can of my own self do nothing; as I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just because I seek not my own will, but the will of the Father who has sent me.31 If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.32 There is another that bears witness of me, and I know that the witness which he witnesses of me is true.33 Ye sent unto John, and he bore witness unto the truth.34 But I receive not testimony from man, but I say these things that ye might be saved.35 He was a burning and a shining light, and ye were willing to rejoice for one hour in his light.36 But I have greater testimony than [that] of John; for the works which the Father has given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me that the Father has sent me.37 And the Father himself, who has sent me, has borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time nor seen his appearance.38 And ye do not have his word abiding in you; for whom he has sent, him ye do not believe.39 Search the scriptures, for in them ye think ye have eternal life; and they are those who testify of me.40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.41 I [do] not receive glory from men.42 But I know you that ye have not the love of God in you.43 I have come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not; if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.44 How can ye believe, who take glory one from another, and seek not the glory that [comes] only from God?45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father; there is [one] that accuses you, [even] Moses, in whom ye trust.46 For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me, for he wrote of me.47 But if ye do not believe his writings, how shall ye believe my words?:
