1 Os filhos de Aarão, Nadab e Abiú, tomaram cada um o seu turíbulo, puseram neles fogo e incenso e ofereceram ao Senhor um fogo estranho, que não lhes tinha sido ordenado.2 Saiu, então, um fogo de diante do Senhor que os devorou, e morreram diante do Senhor.3 Moisés disse a Aarão: "Era isso o que o Senhor tinha anunciado quando disse: serei santificado naqueles que se aproximam de mim, e serei glorificado em presença de todo o povo". Aarão calou-se.4 Moisés chamou Misael e Elisafon, filhos de Oziel, tio de Aarão, e disse-lhes: "Vinde e levai vossos irmãos para longe do santuário, fora do acampamento".5 Eles vieram e levaram-nos com suas túnicas para fora do acampamento, como Moisés lhes dissera.6 Moisés disse a Aarão, a Eleazar e a Itamar: "Não descubrais as cabeças, nem rasgueis as vossas vestes; não suceda que morrais e que se levante a ira do Senhor contra toda a assembléia. Vossos irmãos e toda a casa de Israel chorem por causa do incêndio que o Senhor acendeu;7 vós, porém, não deixareis a entrada da tenda de reunião, para que não morrais, porque o óleo de unção do Senhor está sobre vós". E obedeceram à palavra de Moisés.8 O Senhor disse a Aarão:9 "Não beberás vinho nem cerveja, tu e teus filhos, quando entrardes na tenda de reunião, para que não morrais. Esta é uma lei perpétua para vossos descendentes,10 a fim de que estejais sempre em condições de discernir o que é santo do que é profano, o puro do impuro,11 e de ensinar aos israelitas todas as leis que o Senhor lhes deu por Moisés."12 Moisés disse a Aarão, e Eleazar e a Itamar, os dois filhos sobreviventes de Aarão: "Tomai a oblação que resta dos sacrifícios pelo fogo ao Senhor e comei-a sem fermento junto do altar, porque esta é uma coisa santíssima.13 Vós a comereis em um lugar santo, porquanto essa parte dos sacrifícios feitos pelo fogo ao Senhor é tua e de teus filhos, como me foi prescrito.14 Comereis, também, em lugar limpo, tu, teus filhos e tuas filhas, o peito que foi agitado e a coxa que foi separada. Isto é o que vos toca a ti e a teus filhos como parte dos sacrifícios pacíficos dos israelitas.15 Além das gorduras que deverão ser queimadas, trarão a coxa e o peito separados para agitá-los adiante do Senhor. Assim deve ser para ti e teus filhos em virtude de uma lei perpétua, assim como prescreveu o Senhor".16 Moisés se informou acerca do bode imolado pelo pecado, mas eis que ele tinha sido já queimado. Irou-se, então, contra Eleazar e Itamar, os últimos filhos de Aarão:17 "Por que, disse ele, não comestes no lugar santo o sacrifício pelo pecado? Pois essa é uma coisa santíssima que o Senhor vos deu, a fim de que leveis a iniqüidade da assembléia e façais a expiação por ela diante dele.18 Já que o sangue da vítima não foi trazido para dentro do tabernáculo, vós devíeis tê-la comido em um lugar santo como ordenei."19 Aarão disse-lhe: "Eles ofereceram hoje seu sacrifício pelo pecado e seu holocausto ao Senhor; mas, depois do que me aconteceu, se eu tivesse comido hoje a vítima pelo pecado, teria isso agradado ao Senhor?"20 Moisés, ouvindo essas palavras, deu-se por satisfeito.

1 And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took each of them his censer and put fire therein and put incense thereon and offered strange fire before the LORD, which he had never commanded them.2 And there went out fire from the LORD and devoured them, and they died before the LORD.3 Then Moses said unto Aaron, This [is] what the LORD spoke, saying, I will be sanctified in those that come near me, and before all the people I will be glorified. And Aaron was silent.4 And Moses called Mishael and Elzaphan, the sons of Uzziel the uncle of Aaron, and said unto them, Come near, carry your brethren from before the sanctuary out of the camp.5 So they went near and carried them in their coats out of the camp, as Moses had said.6 Then Moses said unto Aaron and unto Eleazar and unto Ithamar, his sons, Do not uncover your heads, neither rend your clothes lest ye die and lest wrath come upon the whole congregation; but your brethren, the whole house of Israel, shall lament the burning which the LORD has done.7 And ye shall not go out from the door of the tabernacle of the testimony, lest ye die; for the anointing oil of the LORD [is] upon you. And they did according to the word of Moses.8 And the LORD spoke unto Aaron, saying,9 Do not drink wine nor strong drink, thou, nor thy sons with thee when ye go into the tabernacle of the testimony, lest ye die; [it shall be] a perpetual statute throughout your generations;10 and [this is] that ye may discern between the holy and the profane and between the unclean and the clean11 and that ye may teach the sons of Israel all the statutes which the LORD has spoken unto them by the hand of Moses.12 And Moses spoke unto Aaron and unto Eleazar and unto Ithamar, his sons that were left, Take the present that remains of the offerings on fire unto the LORD and eat it without leaven beside the altar; for it [is] most holy:13 Ye must, therefore, eat it in the holy place, because it [is] thy due and thy sons' due of the offerings of the LORD on fire; for so I am commanded.14 And the waved breast and elevated shoulder shall ye likewise eat in a clean place, thou and thy sons and thy daughters with thee; for [they are] thy due and thy sons' due, [which] are given out of the sacrifices of the peace of the sons of Israel.15 With the offerings of the fat which are to be lit on fire, they shall bring the shoulder which is to be elevated and the breast which shall be waved as a wave [offering] before the LORD; and it shall be thine and thy sons' with thee by a perpetual statute, as the LORD has commanded.16 And Moses diligently sought the goat of the sin, and, behold, it was burnt up, and he was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, the sons of Aaron [who were] left [alive], saying,17 Why have ye not eaten of the [atonement for] sin in the holy place? For it [is] most holy, and [God] has given it to you to bear the iniquity of the congregation, that they may be reconciled before the LORD.18 Behold, the blood of it was not brought in within the inner sanctuary; ye should indeed have eaten it in the holy [place], as I commanded.19 And Aaron replied unto Moses, Behold, today they have offered their sin and their burnt offering before the LORD; with all this, these things have befallen me; therefore [if] I had eaten of the [atonement for] sin today, would it have been accepted in the sight of the LORD?20 And when Moses heard [that], he was content.:
