1 In the seventh year, Jehoiada strengthened himself, and took the captains of hundreds, Azariah the son of Jeroham, Ishmael the son of Jehohanan, Azariah the son of Obed, Maaseiah the son of Adaiah, and Elishaphat the son of Zichri, into a covenant with him. 2 They went around in Judah, and gathered the Levites out of all the cities of Judah, and the heads of fathers’ households of Israel, and they came to Jerusalem. 3 All the assembly made a covenant with the king in God’s house. He said to them, "Behold, the king’s son must reign, as the LORD has spoken concerning the sons of David. 4 This is the thing that you must do. A third part of you, who come in on the Sabbath, of the priests and of the Levites, shall be gatekeepers of the thresholds. 5 A third part shall be at the king’s house; and a third part at the gate of the foundation. All the people will be in the courts of the LORD’s house. 6 But let no one come into the LORD’s house, except the priests and those who minister of the Levites. They shall come in, for they are holy, but all the people shall follow the LORD’s instructions. 7 The Levites shall surround the king, every man with his weapons in his hand. Whoever comes into the house, let him be slain. Be with the king when he comes in, and when he goes out."

8 So the Levites and all Judah did according to all that Jehoiada the priest commanded: and they each took his men, those who were to come in on the Sabbath; with those who were to go out on the Sabbath; for Jehoiada the priest didn’t dismiss the shift. 9 Jehoiada the priest delivered to the captains of hundreds the spears, and bucklers, and shields, that had been king David’s, which were in God’s house. 10 He set all the people, every man with his weapon in his hand, from the right side of the house to the left side of the house, near the altar and the house, around the king. 11 Then they brought out the king’s son, and put the crown on him, and gave him the covenant, and made him king. Jehoiada and his sons anointed him, and they said, "Long live the king!"

12 When Athaliah heard the noise of the people running and praising the king, she came to the people into the LORD’s house. 13 Then she looked, and, behold, the king stood by his pillar at the entrance, and the captains and the shofars by the king. All the people of the land rejoiced, and blew shofars. The singers also played musical instruments, and led the singing of praise. Then Athaliah tore her clothes, and said, "Treason! treason!"

14 Jehoiada the priest brought out the captains of hundreds who were set over the army, and said to them, "Bring her out between the ranks; and whoever follows her, let him be slain with the sword." For the priest said, "Don’t kill her in the LORD’s house." 15 So they made way for her. She went to the entrance of the horse gate to the king’s house; and they killed her there.

16 Jehoiada made a covenant between himself, all the people, and the king, that they should be the LORD’s people. 17 All the people went to the house of Baal, broke it down, broke his altars and his images in pieces, and killed Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars. 18 Jehoiada appointed the officers of the LORD’s house under the hand of the Levitical priests, whom David had distributed in the LORD’s house, to offer the burnt offerings of the LORD, as it is written in the Torah of Moses, with rejoicing and with singing, as David had ordered. 19 He set the gatekeepers at the gates of the LORD’s house, that no one who was unclean in anything should enter in. 20 He took the captains of hundreds, the nobles, the governors of the people, and all the people of the land, and brought the king down from the LORD’s house. They came through the upper gate to the king’s house, and set the king on the throne of the kingdom. 21 So all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet. They had slain Athaliah with the sword.

1 No sétimo ano da regência da rainha Atalia, o sacerdote Jeoiada, encheu-se de coragem e foi ter com alguns dos oficiais do exército: Azarias (filho de Jeroão), Ismael (filho de Joanã), Azarias (filho de Obede), Maaséias (filho de Adaías) e Elisafate (filho de Zicri).

2 Estes homens deslocaram-se através da nação, secretamente, para pôr os levitas e os chefes de clã ao corrente dos seus planos de conspiração, e para os convocar para Jerusalém. Reunidos todos, juraram lealdade ao jovem monarca, que vivia ainda escondido no templo.Chegou enfim o tempo do nosso rei começar a reinar!, exclamou Jeoiada. A promessa do Senhor -de que um descendente de David seria sempre o nosso rei- concretizar-se-á de novo. O plano que temos é este: Um terço de vocês, os sacerdotes e os levitas que executam um serviço no Blsábado, fica à entrada, de guarda. Um outro terço vai para o palácio, e a outra terça parte ficará na porta do Fundamento. O resto das pessoas deverá permanecer nos pátios exteriores do templo, como querem as leis de Deus. Porque apenas os sacerdotes e os levitas em funções podem entrar no templo mesmo, porque estão santificados.

7 Vocês, levitas, formarão como que a guarda pessoal do rei; estarão armados e prontos a matar seja quem for que entre no templo sem autorização. Mantenham-se sempre junto dele.

8 Fizeram-se então todos os preparativos, conforme fora combinado. Cada um dos três líderes levou um terço tanto dos sacerdotes que iam entrar nesse sábado em funções, como dos que saíam nessa semana - porque Jeoiada não deixou ninguém ir-se embora.

9 Depois Jeoiada entregou lanças e escudos a todos os oficiais do exército. Eram armas que tinham pertencido uma vez ao rei David e se encontravam agora depositadas numa das dependências do templo. Estes oficiais, completamente armados, formavam uma linha de homens, de um lado ao outro da frente do templo e à volta do altar, no pátio exterior.

11 Depois trouxeram o pequeno príncipe, colocaram-lhe a coroa sobre a cabeça, entregaram-lhe uma cópia da lei de Deus e proclamaram-no rei. Um grande brando ressoou: Viva o rei!

12 Quando Atalia ouviu todo aquele barulho e a agitação popular, aclamando o rei, correu para o templo para ver o que se passava - lá estava o rei, junto a um pilar à entrada, com os oficiais do exército e os trombetistas ao pé dele, rodeando-o. O povo, que estava vindo de toda a parte, regozijava-se. Ouviam-se as cornetas; também os levitas cantavam acompanhados de instrumentos e conduzindo o povo num grande salmo de louvor. Atalia rasgou os vestidos e gritou: Traição! Traição!

14 Tirem-na daqui e matem-na, mandou Jeoiada aos oficiais do exército. Não façam isso aqui dentro do templo. Matem também qualquer que venha em auxílio dela.

16 Eles levaram-na para os estábulos do palácio e ali a mataram. Jeoiada fez então uma promessa solene em como ele, o rei e o povo haveriam de ser sempre do Senhor. Depois, todo o povo correu para o templo de Baal e o derrubou, quebrando os altares, destruindo os ídolos e matando o sacerdote de Baal, de nome Matão, mesmo em frente dos seus altares.

18 Jeoiada designou sacerdotes levitas como guardas, e também os que deveriam ter a função de oferecer holocaustos de acordo com o que o Senhor mandou na lei de Moisés. Fez aliás as mesmas distribuições de funções entre os levitas que o rei David estabelecera. Eles cantavam de alegria, enquanto trabalhavam.

19 Os guardas às portas do templo fiscalizavam o acesso, impedindo a entrada de coisas não consagradas, e de pessoas não autorizadas.

20 Os oficiais do exército, os nobres, os governadores e o povo escoltou o rei no percurso que fez desde a porta Superior até ao palácio, sentando-se sobre o trono.

21 Assim todo o povo da terra se alegrou, e a cidade permaneceu tranquila em paz, porque a rainha Atalia morrera.
