1 All the people of Judah took Uzziah, who was sixteen years old, and made him king in the place of his father Amaziah. 2 He built Eloth and restored it to Judah. After that the king slept with his fathers. 3 Uzziah was sixteen years old when he began to reign; and he reigned fifty-two years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Jechiliah, of Jerusalem. 4 He did that which was right in the LORD’s eyes, according to all that his father Amaziah had done. 5 He set himself to seek God in the days of Zechariah, who had understanding in the vision of God; and as long as he sought the LORD, God made him prosper.

6 He went out and fought against the Philistines, and broke down the wall of Gath, the wall of Jabneh, and the wall of Ashdod; and he built cities in the country of Ashdod, and among the Philistines. 7 God helped him against the Philistines, and against the Arabians who lived in Gur Baal, and the Meunim. 8 The Ammonites gave tribute to Uzziah. His name spread abroad even to the entrance of Egypt; for he grew exceedingly strong. 9 Moreover Uzziah built towers in Jerusalem at the corner gate, at the valley gate, and at the turning of the wall, and fortified them. 10 He built towers in the wilderness, and dug out many cisterns, for he had much livestock; in the lowland also, and in the plain. He had farmers and vineyard keepers in the mountains and in the fruitful fields, for he loved farming. 11 Moreover Uzziah had an army of fighting men, who went out to war by bands, according to the number of their reckoning made by Jeiel the scribe and Maaseiah the officer, under the hand of Hananiah, one of the king’s captains. 12 The whole number of the heads of fathers’ households, even the mighty men of valor, was two thousand six hundred. 13 Under their hand was an army, three hundred seven thousand five hundred, who made war with mighty power, to help the king against the enemy. 14 Uzziah prepared for them, even for all the army, shields, spears, helmets, coats of mail, bows, and stones for slinging. 15 In Jerusalem, he made devices, invented by skillful men, to be on the towers and on the battlements, with which to shoot arrows and great stones. His name spread far abroad, because he was marvelously helped until he was strong.

16 But when he was strong, his heart was lifted up, so that he did corruptly, and he trespassed against the LORD his God; for he went into the LORD’s temple to burn incense on the altar of incense. 17 Azariah the priest went in after him, and with him eighty priests of the LORD, who were valiant men. 18 They resisted Uzziah the king, and said to him, "It isn’t for you, Uzziah, to burn incense to the LORD, but for the priests the sons of Aaron, who are consecrated to burn incense. Go out of the sanctuary, for you have trespassed. It will not be for your honor from the LORD God."

19 Then Uzziah was angry. He had a censer in his hand to burn incense, and while he was angry with the priests, the leprosy broke out on his forehead before the priests in the LORD’s house, beside the altar of incense. 20 Azariah the chief priest, and all the priests, looked at him, and behold, he was leprous in his forehead, and they thrust him out quickly from there. Yes, he himself also hurried to go out, because the LORD had struck him. 21 Uzziah the king was a leper to the day of his death, and lived in a separate house, being a leper; for he was cut off from the LORD’s house. Jotham his son was over the king’s house, judging the people of the land. 22 Now the rest of the acts of Uzziah, first and last, Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, wrote. 23 So Uzziah slept with his fathers; and they buried him with his fathers in the field of burial which belonged to the kings, for they said, "He is a leper." Jotham his son reigned in his place.

1 O povo de Judá coroou rei, para suceder a seu pai, Uzias , que tinha dezasseis anos.

2 Este reconstruiu a cidade de Elote e reintegrou-a em Judá. Ao todo reinou cinquenta e dois anos. A capital do reino mantinha-se Jerusalém. A sua mãe chamava-se Jecolia; era originária de Jerusalém. Conduziu-se com rectidão, perante Deus, imitando seu pai Amazias naquilo que este tinha feito de bem.

5 Enquanto Zacarias viveu, Uzias sempre se esforçou por buscar o Senhor. Zacarias foi um homem entendido nas coisas de Deus. E portanto, todo o tempo em que o rei procurou agradar a Deus, as coisas correram-lhe bem.

6 Declarou guerra aos filisteus e conquistou a cidade de Gate, derrubando-lhe as muralhas; fez o mesmo às cidades de Jabné e de Asdode. Construiu posteriormente novas povoações, na área de Asdode e noutras partes de Filisteia. Deus ajudou-o, não somente nessas guerras contra os filisteus, mas ainda noutras contra os árabes de Gur-Baal e contra os meunitas. Os amonitas ficaram a pagar-lhe um tributo, e a sua fama espalhou-se até ao Egipto; tornou-se muito poderoso.

9 Edificou torres fortificadas em Jerusalém, na porta do Canto, na porta do Vale e nos ângulos que a muralha fazia. Também construiu fortes no Negueve, assim como muitos reservatórios de água, pois tinha grandes rebanhos de gado, tanto nos vales como nas campinas. Era um homem que amava o trabalho agrícola; tinha ao seu serviço fazendeiros, vinhateiros nas montanhas e nas campinas férteis.

11 Reorganizou o exército em regimentos, enviando para os destacamentos militares homens aptos para o combate, segundo recrutamentos ordenados por Jeiel, secretário-geral do exército, e pelo seu assistente Maaséias. O comando militar das tropas estava sob as ordens de Hananias. Dois mil e seiscentos bravos sargentos, todos eles chefes de clãs, tinha responsabilidades de chefia, dentro do exército. O número total dos militares alistados era de trezentos e sete mil e quinhentos homens, todos cuidadosamente preparados para o combate e dispostos a obedecer às ordens do rei.

14 Uzias equipou o exército com armamento: escudos, lanças, couraças, arcos, e até fundas, para atirar pedras; forneceu também capacetes para os soldados. Mandou igualmente construir máquinas de guerra, inventadas por competentes construtores de engenhos, as quais ficaram em Jerusalém. Esses aparelhos serviam para atirar flechas, assim como grandes pedras, a partir das torres fortificadas nos cantos da muralha. Ganhou assim grande fama e tornou-se poderoso, porque o Senhor o ajudou.

16 Mas após isso começou a tornar-se orgulhoso e corrupto. Transgrediu a lei do Senhor seu Deus, entrando no santuário do templo, o que lhe era absolutamente ilícito, e queimou ele próprio incenso sobre o altar. Azarias, o sumo sacerdote, entrou atrás dele, acompanhado de mais oitenta sacerdotes, todos homens fortes, e mandou-lhe que saísse dali. Não é da tua competência, Uzias, queimar incenso, declarou-lhe. Isso é função estritamente reservada aos sacerdotes, filhos de Arão, que foram consagrados para esse serviço. Retira-te daqui. Transgrediste, e o que estás a fazer não pode de forma alguma representar uma honra para ti!

19 Uzias ficou furioso, e recusou largar o incensário que segurava na mão. Eis se não quando, começa a aparecer-lhe lepra na testa. Ali aos olhos de todos os sacerdotes!

20 Estes, e Azarias, quando viram aquilo, empurraram-no apressadamente para fora. Ele próprio se deu pressa em sair dali, pois reconheceu que o Senhor o feria.

21 Assim ficou Uzias leproso até morrer. Foi obrigado a viver isolado, numa casa à parte, excluído de contactos com as pessoas e com o templo. Seu filho Jotão tornou-se regente do reino, gerindo os assuntos da governação e atendendo aos problemas do povo.

22 Outros factos respeitantes a este reinado, do seu começo até ao final, foram relatados pelo profeta Isaías, filho de Amós. Quando morreu, Uzias foi sepultado no cemitério real, ainda que sendo leproso. O seu filho Jotão ascendeu à dignidade de rei.
