1 Then the people of the land took Jehoahaz the son of Josiah, and made him king in his father’s place in Jerusalem. 2 Joahaz was twenty-three years old when he began to reign; and he reigned three months in Jerusalem. 3 The king of Egypt removed him from office at Jerusalem, and fined the land one hundred talents of silver and a talent of gold. 4 The king of Egypt made Eliakim his brother king over Judah and Jerusalem, and changed his name to Jehoiakim. Neco took Joahaz his brother, and carried him to Egypt.

5 Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. He did that which was evil in the LORD his God’s sight. 6 Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up against him, and bound him in fetters to carry him to Babylon. 7 Nebuchadnezzar also carried some of the vessels of the LORD’s house to Babylon, and put them in his temple at Babylon. 8 Now the rest of the acts of Jehoiakim, and his abominations which he did, and that which was found in him, behold, they are written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah; and Jehoiachin his son reigned in his place.

9 Jehoiachin was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned three months and ten days in Jerusalem. He did that which was evil in the LORD’s sight. 10 At the return of the year, king Nebuchadnezzar sent and brought him to Babylon, with the valuable vessels of the LORD’s house, and made Zedekiah his brother king over Judah and Jerusalem.

11 Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. 12 He did that which was evil in the LORD his God’s sight. He didn’t humble himself before Jeremiah the prophet speaking from the LORD’s mouth. 13 He also rebelled against king Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him swear by God; but he stiffened his neck, and hardened his heart against turning to the LORD, the God of Israel. 14 Moreover all the chiefs of the priests, and the people, trespassed very greatly after all the abominations of the nations; and they polluted the LORD’s house which he had made holy in Jerusalem. 15 The LORD, the God of their fathers, sent to them by his messengers, rising up early and sending, because he had compassion on his people, and on his dwelling place; 16 but they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and scoffed at his prophets, until the LORD’s wrath arose against his people, until there was no remedy.

17 Therefore he brought on them the king of the Kasdim, who killed their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and had no compassion on young man or virgin, old man or gray-headed. He gave them all into his hand. 18 All the vessels of God’s house, great and small, and the treasures of the LORD’s house, and the treasures of the king, and of his princes, all these he brought to Babylon. 19 They burned God’s house, and broke down the wall of Jerusalem, and burned all its palaces with fire, and destroyed all of its valuable vessels. 20 He carried those who had escaped from the sword away to Babylon, and they were servants to him and his sons until the reign of the kingdom of Persia, 21 to fulfill the LORD’s word by Jeremiah’s mouth, until the land had enjoyed its Sabbaths. As long as it lay desolate, it kept Sabbath, to fulfill seventy years.

22 Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the LORD’s word by the mouth of Jeremiah might be accomplished, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, so that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying, 23 "Cyrus king of Persia says, ‘The LORD, the God of heaven, has given all the kingdoms of the earth to me; and he has commanded me to build him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Whoever there is among you of all his people, the LORD his God be with him, and let him go up.’"

1 Sucedeu-lhe no trono Jeoacaz, seu filho. Tinha vinte e três anos quando começou a reinar, mas reinou apenas três meses.

3 Foi deposto pelo rei do Egipto, que exigiu de Judá um tributo anual de três mil quilos de prata e trinta quilos de ouro.

4 O rei do Egipto pôs no seu lugar Eliaquim, irmão do rei anterior, mudando-lhe o nome para Joaquim. Entretanto Jeoacaz foi levado prisioneiro para o Egipto.

5 Tinha Joaquim vinte e cinco anos quando começou a reinar. Reinou onze anos em Jerusalém. Foi um mau rei.

6 Por fim, Nabucodonozor rei da Babilónia conquistou Jerusalém, e levou-o em cadeias para Babilónia. Nabudoconozor levou também parte das taças de ouro do templo, e outras coisas mais, colocando-as no seu próprio templo em Babilónia. O resto dos feitos de Joaquim, e toda a maldade que praticou, está registado nos Anais dos Reis de Judá. Seu filho Jeconias subiu ao trono em seu lugar.

9 Tinha Jeconias oito anos quando começou a reinar; mas foi rei apenas por três meses e dez dias. Foi um mau reinado, aos olhos de Deus. Na primavera seguinte foi mandado vir para Babilónia pelo rei Nabucodonozor. Nessa altura muitos tesouros do templo foram levados para Babilónia, e Nabucodonozor designou rei, em seu lugar, o seu irmão Zedequias.

11 Zedequias tinha vinte e um anos quando começou a reinar, tendo sido de onze anos o tempo em que foi rei em Jerusalém. Foi também um mau rei, aos olhos do Senhor, tendo recusado dar ouvidos aos conselhos de Jeremias, o profeta, que lhe transmitia as mensagens do Senhor. Rebelou-se contra Nabucodonozor, apesar de lhe ter feito uma jura de lealdade. Zedequias era um homem duro e obstinado, sempre resistindo a obedecer ao Senhor Deus de Israel.

14 Todas as altas personagens da nação, incluindo os sacerdotes principais, prestavam culto aos ídolos das nações vizinhas e poluíam o templo do Senhor Deus em Jerusalém.

15 Jeová, o Deus dos seus antepassados, mandou-lhes profetas, que os avisavam repetidas vezes e insistentemente, pois tinha compaixão do seu povo e pena do seu templo.

16 O povo ria-se das mensagens de Deus, desprezava a sua palavra, troçava dos profetas. Até que não foi mais possível conter a ira do Senhor, e deixou enfim de ser possível empreender uma reforma do povo.

17 O Senhor trouxe o rei da Babilónia contra eles, que lhes matou os jovens, mesmo quando fugiam para dentro do próprio templo, que não teve piedade com ninguém, que matou donzelas e velhos! O Senhor usou o rei da Babilónia para os destruir completamente.

18 Também levou consigo todos os utensílios do templo, coisas grandes e pequenas, assim como todo o resto dos tesouros da casa do Senhor e do palácio real. Tomou também consigo os filhos dos reis e altos dignitários.

19 O seu exército deitou fogo ao templo, derrubou as muralhas de Jerusalém, queimou as casas apalaçadas, destruiu, enfim, tudo o que havia de precioso no templo.

20 Os sobreviventes levou-os como escravos para Babilónia, ao seu serviço pessoal e dos seus filhos. Mais tarde aconteceu que o reino de Babilónia foi vencido pelo rei da Pérsia.

21 Assim se cumpriu a palavra do Senhor, comunicada através de Jeremias, de que a terra deveria repousar durante setenta anos, para compensar os anos em que o povo recusou observar o sábado.

22 No primeiro ano do rei Ciro, da Pérsia, o Senhor despertou o espírito deste rei, levando-o a fazer a seguinte proclamação, através de todo o reino, a qual mandou pôr por escrito: Todos os reinos da Terra me foram dados pelo Senhor Deus dos céus, que me deu instruções para que lhe construísse um templo em Jerusalém, na terra de Judá. Todos os que são seu povo devem regressar a Israel, para dar cumprimento a essa tarefa, e o Senhor será com eles.
