1 All the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night. 2 All the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron. The whole congregation said to them, "We wish that we had died in the land of Egypt, or that we had died in this wilderness! 3 Why does the LORD bring us to this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will be captured or killed! Wouldn’t it be better for us to return into Egypt?" 4 They said to one another, "Let’s choose a leader, and let’s return into Egypt."

5 Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.

6 Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were of those who spied out the land, tore their clothes. 7 They spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying, "The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceedingly good land. 8 If the LORD delights in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it to us: a land which flows with milk and honey. 9 Only don’t rebel against the LORD, neither fear the people of the land; for they are bread for us. Their defense is removed from over them, and the LORD is with us. Don’t fear them."

10 But all the congregation threatened to stone them with stones.

The LORD’s glory appeared in the Tent of Meeting to all the children of Israel. 11 The LORD said to Moses, "How long will this people despise me? How long will they not believe in me, for all the signs which I have worked among them? 12 I will strike them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they."

13 Moses said to the LORD, "Then the Egyptians will hear it; for you brought up this people in your might from among them. 14 They will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that you LORD are among this people; for you LORD are seen face to face, and your cloud stands over them, and you go before them, in a pillar of cloud by day, and in a pillar of fire by night. 15 Now if you killed this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of you will speak, saying, 16 ‘Because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land which he swore to them, therefore he has slain them in the wilderness.’ 17 Now please let the power of the Lord be great, according as you have spoken, saying, 18 ‘The LORD is slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, forgiving iniquity and disobedience; and he will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and on the fourth generation.’ 19 Please pardon the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of your loving kindness, and just as you have forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now."

20 The LORD said, "I have pardoned according to your word; 21 but in very deed—as I live, and as all the earth shall be filled with the LORD’s glory— 22 because all those men who have seen my glory and my signs, which I worked in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet have tempted me these ten times, and have not listened to my voice; 23 surely they shall not see the land which I swore to their fathers, neither shall any of those who despised me see it. 24 But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and has followed me fully, him I will bring into the land into which he went. His offspring shall possess it. 25 Since the Amalekite and the Canaanite dwell in the valley, tomorrow turn and go into the wilderness by the way to the Sea of Suf." 26 The LORD spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying, 27 "How long shall I bear with this evil congregation that complain against me? I have heard the complaints of the children of Israel, which they complain against me. 28 Tell them, ‘As I live, says the LORD, surely as you have spoken in my ears, so I will do to you. 29 Your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness; and all who were counted of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, who have complained against me, 30 surely you shall not come into the land concerning which I swore that I would make you dwell therein, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun. 31 But I will bring in your little ones that you said should be captured or killed, and they shall know the land which you have rejected. 32 But as for you, your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness. 33 Your children shall be wanderers in the wilderness forty years, and shall bear your prostitution, until your dead bodies are consumed in the wilderness. 34 After the number of the days in which you spied out the land, even forty days, for every day a year, you will bear your iniquities, even forty years, and you will know my alienation.’ 35 I, the LORD, have spoken. I will surely do this to all this evil congregation who are gathered together against me. In this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die."

36 The men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned and made all the congregation to murmur against him by bringing up an evil report against the land, 37 even those men who brought up an evil report of the land, died by the plague before the LORD. 38 But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh remained alive of those men who went to spy out the land.

39 Moses told these words to all the children of Israel, and the people mourned greatly. 40 They rose up early in the morning and went up to the top of the mountain, saying, "Behold, we are here, and will go up to the place which the LORD has promised; for we have sinned."

41 Moses said, "Why now do you disobey the commandment of the LORD, since it shall not prosper? 42 Don’t go up, for the LORD isn’t among you; that way you won’t be struck down before your enemies. 43 For there the Amalekite and the Canaanite are before you, and you will fall by the sword because you turned back from following the LORD; therefore the LORD will not be with you."

44 But they presumed to go up to the top of the mountain. Nevertheless, the ark of the LORD’s covenant and Moses didn’t depart out of the camp. 45 Then the Amalekites came down, and the Canaanites who lived in that mountain, and struck them and beat them down even to Hormah.

1 Então todo o povo começou a chorar, em altos clamores; assim ficaram até durante a noite toda. E levantaram um grande coro de queixa contra Moisés e Arão: Mais valia que tivéssemos morrido no Egipto, ou até mesmo aqui no deserto,

3 em vez de sermos levados para essa terra que aí está. Jeová irá matar-nos lá; as nossas mulheres e os nossos filhos ficarão cativos como escravos. Saiamos mas é daqui e voltemos para o Egipto!

4 Esta ideia arrastou todo o campo. Vamos eleger um chefe para nos levar outra vez para o Egipto!, gritavam.

5 Então Moisés e Arão caíram com os rostos em terra na frente do povo de Israel.

6 Contudo, dois dos que tinham sido enviados a espreitar a terra - Josué filho de Num e Calebe filho de Jefoné - tiveram outra atitude. Rasgaram a roupa que vestiam em sinal de indignação e disseram ao povo: Olhem que essa terra que fomos ver, que temos diante de nós, é uma região maravilhosa! Não se esqueçam de que o Senhor ama-nos! Ele nos levará com toda a segurança para lá e a terra será nossa. É extremamente fértil; pode dizer-se realmente que produz leite e mel. Oh! Não se revoltem contra o Senhor; não tenham medo daquele povo. Eles são, afinal, o pão de que precisamos. O Senhor está connosco e por isso retira-lhes todo o apoio. Sobretudo não tenham medo deles!

10 Mas a única resposta do povo foi pensar em apedrejá-los. Nessa altura apareceu a glória do Senhor, o qual disse a Moisés: Até quando me desprezará este povo? Será que nunca chegarão a acreditar em mim, mesmo depois de todos os milagres que fiz no meio deles? Vou rejeitá-los e castigá-los com uma praga. Quanto a ti, farei que te tornes uma nação ainda mais numerosa e mais poderosa do que eles!

13 Senhor, suplicou Moisés, mas que hão-de dizer os egípcios quando ouvirem isso? Eles constataram bem todo o poder que revelaste quando resgataste o teu povo de lá. Entretanto já contaram isso tudo aos habitantes da terra, os quais se dão perfeitamente conta de que estás com Israel, e que lhes falas face a face. Vêem até a coluna de nuvem e de fogo que se mantém por cima de nós e sabem que nos guias e nos proteges de dia e de noite. Portanto se matares todo o teu povo, as nações que ouviram a tua fama dirão: 'O Senhor matou-os porque não podia cuidar deles no deserto. Não foi capaz de os trazer até à terra que jurou dar-lhes!'

17 Oh! peço-te, manifesta o teu grande poder, perdoando os nossos pecados e fazendo prova do teu profundo amor para connosco. Perdoa-nos ainda que tenhas dito que não deixarás o pecado por castigar, mas que punirás a culpa dos pais nos filhos até à terceira e quarta geração. Rogo-te pois que perdoes os pecados deste povo, de acordo com a tua grandeza e o teu amor autêntico, e tal como lhe tens perdoado sempre desde que deixaram o Egipto até agora.

20 Então o Senhor respondeu-lhe: Pois sim, perdoo-lhes conforme me pediste. Mas prometo solenemente pelo meu próprio nome que, tão certo como a terra vir a encher-se com a minha glória, nenhum deste indivíduos que viram a minha grandeza e os milagres que fiz, tanto no Egipto como no deserto - e dez vezes recusaram confiar em mim e obedecer-me - nenhum deles portanto verá sequer a terra que prometi aos seus antepassados.

24 No entanto meu servo Calebe portou-se diferentemente - obedeceu-me inteiramente; houve nele uma atitude diferente. A ele, levá-lo-ei até à terra que foi observar, e os seus descendentes possui-la-ão inteiramente. Agora pois, visto que o povo de Israel está assim com tanto medo dos amalequitas e dos cananeus que vivem nos vales, regressarão ao deserto amanhã na direcção do Mar Vermelho.

26 O Senhor ainda acrescentou o seguinte a Moisés e a Arão:

27 Até quando continuará este povo mau a queixar-se de mim? Porque ouvi tudo o que têm dito. Digam-lhes então:

28 'O Senhor prometeu-vos efectivamente aquilo que mais receiam: morrerão aqui neste deserto! Nem um só de vocês, que se têm queixado de mim e que têm mais de vinte anos, entrará na terra prometida. Apenas a Calebe filho de Jefoné e a Josué filho de Num será permitido lá entrarem.

31 Dizem que os vossos filhos se haviam de tornar escravos do povo da terra. Pois a eles sim, levarei com segurança para a terra e possuirão aquilo que vocês recusaram. Os vossos corpos portanto hão-de vir a cair no deserto. E até lá, vaguearão por aí, como nómadas, durante quarenta anos. Será dessa forma que pagarão pela vossa falta de confiança, até que o último caia morto nessa terra desabitada.

34 Sendo então que os espias estiveram quarenta dias na terra que vos ia dar, levarão por isso quarenta anos a vaguear no deserto - levarão um ano por cada dia o peso de culpa dos vossos pecados. Assim vos ensinarei o que significa rejeitar-me.

35 Eu, Jeová, falei. Cada um de vocês que conspirou contra mim morrerá nesta terra deserta.'

36 Os dez outros espias, que tinham iniciado a rebelião contra Jeová, lançando o medo nos corações do povo, desacreditando a terra, foram feridos de morte perante o Senhor. De todos os espias ficaram vivos apenas Josué e Calebe. E quando Moisés veio relatar ao povo as palavras de Deus, espalhou-se uma grande tristeza por todo o acampamento!

40 Na manhã seguinte levantaram-se muito cedo e começaram a preparar-se para ir para a terra prometida. Aqui estamos!, diziam, confessamos que pecámos; mas estamos prontos agora para entrar na terra que o Senhor nos prometeu.

41 Mas Moisés respondeu-lhes: Agora estão a desobedecer à ordem do Senhor de voltarem para o deserto. Não prossigam com o vosso plano, porque então é que seriam mesmo esmagados pelos vossos inimigos, visto que Deus já não vos apoia nisso. Presentemente têm de se lembrar mesmo que estão lá os amalequitas e os cananeus que vos chacinariam! Desviaram-se do Senhor - ele desviar-se-á de vocês!

44 Apesar destas palavras, continuaram a subir à zona das colinas, mesmo sem que a arca nem Moisés tivessem deixado o acampamento. Então os amalequitas que viviam nessas colinas desceram e atacaram-nos, ferindo-os e perseguindo-os até Horma.
