1 How doth the city sit solitary, that was full of people!

She is become as a widow, that was great among the nations!

She that was a princess among the provinces is become tributary!

2 She weepeth sore in the night, and her tears are on her cheeks;

Among all her lovers she hath none to comfort her:

All her friends have dealt treacherously with her; they are become her enemies.

3 Judah is gone into captivity because of affliction, and because of great servitude;

She dwelleth among the nations, she findeth no rest:

All her persecutors overtook her within the straits.

4 The ways of Zion do mourn, because none come to the solemn assembly;

All her gates are desolate, her priests do sigh:

Her virgins are afflicted, and she herself is in bitterness.

5 Her adversaries are become the head, her enemies prosper;

For Jehovah hath afflicted her for the multitude of her transgressions:

Her young children are gone into captivity before the adversary.

6 And from the daughter of Zion all her majesty is departed:

Her princes are become like harts that find no pasture,

And they are gone without strength before the pursuer.

7 Jerusalem remembereth in the days of her affliction and of her miseries all her pleasant things that were from the days of old:

When her people fell into the hand of the adversary, and none did help her,

The adversaries saw her, they did mock at her desolations.

8 Jerusalem hath grievously sinned; therefore she is become as an unclean thing;

All that honored her despise her, because they have seen her nakedness:

Yea, she sigheth, and turneth backward.

9 Her filthiness was in her skirts; she remembered not her latter end;

Therefore is she come down wonderfully; she hath no comforter:

Behold, O Jehovah, my affliction; for the enemy hath magnified himself.

10 The adversary hath spread out his hand upon all her pleasant things:

For she hath seen that the nations are entered into her sanctuary,

Concerning whom thou didst command that they should not enter into thine assembly.

11 All her people sigh, they seek bread;

They have given their pleasant things for food to refresh the soul:

See, O Jehovah, and behold; for I am become abject.

12 Is it nothing to you, all ye that pass by?

Behold, and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow, which is brought upon me,

Wherewith Jehovah hath afflicted me in the day of his fierce anger.

13 From on high hath he sent fire into my bones, and it prevaileth against them;

He hath spread a net for my feet, he hath turned me back:

He hath made me desolate and faint all the day.

14 The yoke of my transgressions is bound by his hand;

They are knit together, they are come up upon my neck; he hath made my strength to fail:

The Lord hath delivered me into their hands, against whom I am not able to stand.

15 The Lord hath set at nought all my mighty men in the midst of me;

He hath called a solemn assembly against me to crush my young men:

The Lord hath trodden as in a winepress the virgin daughter of Judah.

16 For these things I weep; mine eye, mine eye runneth down with water;

Because the comforter that should refresh my soul is far from me:

My children are desolate, because the enemy hath prevailed.

17 Zion spreadeth forth her hands; there is none to comfort her;

Jehovah hath commanded concerning Jacob, that they that are round about him should be his adversaries:

Jerusalem is among them as an unclean thing.

18 Jehovah is righteous; for I have rebelled against his commandment:

Hear, I pray you, all ye peoples, and behold my sorrow:

My virgins and my young men are gone into captivity.

19 I called for my lovers, but they deceived me:

My priests and mine elders gave up the ghost in the city,

While they sought them food to refresh their souls.

20 Behold, O Jehovah; for I am in distress; my heart is troubled;

My heart is turned within me; for I have grievously rebelled:

Abroad the sword bereaveth, at home there is as death.

21 They have heard that I sigh; there is none to comfort me;

All mine enemies have heard of my trouble; they are glad that thou hast done it:

Thou wilt bring the day that thou hast proclaimed, and they shall be like unto me.

22 Let all their wickedness come before thee;

And do unto them, as thou hast done unto me for all my transgressions:

For my sighs are many, and my heart is faint.

1 Vai! Cum stă părăsită acum cetatea aceasta atât de plină de popor altădată!

A rămas*Is. 47:7,8. ca o văduvă!

Ea, care altădată era mare între neamuri, fruntașă*Ezra 4:20. printre țări,

a ajuns roabă astăzi!

2 Plânge amarnic noaptea*Ier. 13:17. și-i curg lacrimi*Iov 7:3.Ps. 6:6. pe obraji.

Niciunul*Ier. 4:30;30:14. Vers. 19. din toți*Vers. 9,16,17,21. cei ce o iubeau n-o mângâie;

toți prietenii ei au părăsit-o

și i s-au făcut vrăjmași.

3 Iuda a plecat*Ier. 52:27. în pribegie din pricina apăsării și muncilor grele.

Locuiește*Deut. 28:64,65. Cap. 2:9. în mijlocul neamurilor și nu găsește odihnă!

Toți prigonitorii lui l-au ajuns tocmai când îi era mai mare strâmtorarea.

4 Drumurile Sionului sunt triste, căci nimeni nu se mai duce la sărbători,

toate porțile lui sunt pustii, preoții lui oftează;

fecioarele lui sunt mâhnite și el însuși este plin de amărăciune.

5 Asupritorii*Deut. 28:43,44. lui sar biruitori, vrăjmașii lui sunt mulțumiți.

Căci Domnul l-a smerit din pricina mulțimii*Ier. 30:14,15.Dan. 9:7,16. păcatelor lui;

copiii*Ier. 52:28. lui au mers în robie înaintea asupritorului.

6 S-a dus de la fiica Sionului toată podoaba ei.

Căpeteniile ei au ajuns ca niște cerbi care nu găsesc pășune

și merg fără putere înaintea celui ce-i gonește.

7 În zilele necazului și ticăloșiei lui, Ierusalimul își aduce aminte

de toate bunătățile de care a avut parte din zilele străbune;

când a căzut poporul lui în mâna asupritorului, nimeni nu i-a venit în ajutor,

iar vrăjmașii se uitau la el și râdeau de prăbușirea lui.

8 Greu a păcătuit*1 Împ. 8:46. Ierusalimul! De aceea a ajuns de scârbă.

Toți cei ce-l prețuiau îl disprețuiesc acum, văzându-i goliciunea*Ier. 13:22,26.Ezec. 16:37;23:29.Osea 2:10.,

și el însuși se întoarce în altă parte și oftează.

9 Necurăția stătea lipită pe poala hainei lui

și nu se gândea*Deut. 32:29.Is. 47:7. la sfârșitul său.

A căzut greu de tot. Nimeni*Vers. 2,17,21. nu-l mângâie.

„Vezi-mi ticăloșia, Doamne, căci iată ce semeț este vrăjmașul!"

10 Asupritorul a întins mâna la tot ce avea el mai*Vers. 7. scump;

ba încă a văzut cum, în Locașul lui cel Sfânt, au intrat*Ier. 51:51. neamurile,

cărora Tu le porunciseși să nu intre*Deut. 23:3.Neem. 13:1. în adunarea Ta!

11 Tot poporul lui caută*Ier. 38:9;52:6. Cap. 2:12;4:4. pâine suspinând;

și-au dat lucrurile scumpe pe hrană, numai ca să-și țină viața.

„Uită-Te, Doamne, și privește cât de înjosit sunt!"

12 „O, voi, care treceți pe lângă mine,

priviți și vedeți dacă*Dan. 9:12. este vreo durere ca durerea mea,

ca durerea cu care m-a lovit Domnul în ziua mâniei Lui aprinse!

13 Mi-a azvârlit de sus în oase un foc care le arde;

mi-a întins un*Ezec. 12:13;17:20. laț sub picioare și m-a dat înapoi.

M-a lovit cu pustiire și cu o lâncezeală de toate zilele!

14 Mâna Lui a legat jugul*Deut. 28:48. nelegiuirilor mele,

care stau împletite și legate de gâtul meu. Mi-a frânt puterea.

Domnul m-a dat în mâinile acelora cărora nu pot să le stau împotrivă.

15 Domnul a trântit la pământ pe toți vitejii din mijlocul meu;

a strâns o oștire împotriva mea, ca să-mi prăpădească tineretul;

ca în teasc a călcat*Is. 63:3.Apoc. 14:19,20;19:15. Domnul pe fecioara, fiica lui Iuda.

16 De aceea plâng, îmi varsă lacrimi*Ier. 13:17;14:17. Cap. 2:18. ochii,

căci S-a depărtat de la mine Cel ce trebuia să mă*Vers. 2,9. mângâie, Cel ce trebuia să-mi învioreze viața;

fiii mei sunt zdrobiți, căci vrăjmașul a biruit."

17 Sionul*Ier. 4:31. întinde mâinile rugător, și nimeni*Vers. 2,9. nu-l mângâie.

Domnul a trimis împotriva lui Iacov, de jur împrejur, vrăjmași;

Ierusalimul a ajuns de batjocură în mijlocul lor.

18 „Domnul este drept*Neem. 9:33.Dan. 9:7,14., căci m-am răzvrătit*1 Sam. 12:14,15. împotriva poruncilor Lui.

Ascultați, toate popoarele, și vedeți-mi durerea!

Fecioarele și tinerii mei s-au dus în robie.

19 Mi-am chemat prietenii, dar m-au înșelat*Vers. 2.Ier. 30:14.,

preoții și bătrânii mei au murit în cetate,

căutând*Vers. 11. hrană ca să-și țină viața.

20 Doamne, uită-Te la necazul meu. Lăuntrul meu*Iov 30:27.Is. 16:11.Ier. 4:19;48:36. Cap. 2:11.Osea 11:8. fierbe,

mi s-a întors inima în mine, căci am fost neascultător.

Afară, sabia m-a*Deut. 32:25.Ezec. 7:15. lăsat fără copii; în casă, moartea.

21 M-au auzit suspinând, dar nimeni*Vers. 2. nu m-a mângâiat.

Toți vrăjmașii mei, când au aflat de nenorocirea mea, s-au bucurat că Tu ai adus-o,

dar vei aduce, vei vesti*Is. 13.Ier. 46. ziua când și ei vor fi ca mine.

22 Adu toată răutatea lor înaintea*Ps. 109:15. Ta

și fă-le cum mi-ai făcut mie pentru toate fărădelegile mele!

Căci suspinele mele sunt multe și inima îmi este*Cap. 5:17. bolnavă."
