1 If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal.2 And if I have prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.3 And if I shall dole out all my goods in food, and if I deliver up my body that I may be burned, but have not love, I profit nothing.4 Love has long patience, is kind; love is not emulous {of others}; love is not insolent and rash, is not puffed up,5 does not behave in an unseemly manner, does not seek what is its own, is not quickly provoked, does not impute evil,6 does not rejoice at iniquity but rejoices with the truth,7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.8 Love never fails; but whether prophecies, they shall be done away; or tongues, they shall cease; or knowledge, it shall be done away.9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part:10 but when that which is perfect has come, that which is in part shall be done away.11 When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I felt as a child, I reasoned as a child; when I became a man, I had done with what belonged to the child.12 For we see now through a dim window obscurely, but then face to face; now I know partially, but then I shall know according as I also have been known.13 And now abide faith, hope, love; these three things; and the greater of these {is} love.

1 Quand je parlerai même le langage des hommes qui sont messagers de Dieu; si je n'ai point la charité (l'amour sacrificiel), je suis comme l'airain qui résonne, ou comme une cymbale qui retentit.2 Et quand même j'aurais toute l'interprétation, et que je connaîtrais tous les mystères et toute la science; et quand même j'aurais toute la confiance jusqu'à transporter les montagnes; si je n'ai point la charité, je ne suis rien.3 Et quand même je distribuerais tous mes biens pour la nourriture des pauvres, et quand même je livrerais mon corps pour être brûlé; si je n'ai point la charité, cela ne me sert de rien.4 La charité est patiente, elle est pleine de bonté; la charité n'est point envieuse; la charité ne se vante pas, elle ne s'enfle point d'orgueil;5 Elle ne se conduit point inconvenablement; elle ne cherche point son propre intérêt; elle ne s'irrite point facilement; elle ne pense point au mal;6 Elle ne se réjouit point de l'injustice, mais elle se réjouit de la vérité;7 Elle supporte tout, elle admet tout, elle espère tout, elle endure tout.8 La charité ne périt jamais. Quant aux interprétations prodigieuses, elles seront abolies, et les langages miraculeux cesseront, et la connaissance surnaturelle sera annulée;9 Car nous ne connaissons que partiellement, et nous interprétons qu'incomplètement;10 Mais quand arrivera ce qui sera achevé de la révélation écrite, alors ce qui est incomplet sera annulé.11 Quand j'étais enfant, je parlais comme un enfant, je jugeais comme un enfant, je pensais comme un enfant; mais lorsque je suis devenu homme, j'ai abandonné ce qui était de l'enfant.12 Maintenant nous voyons par un miroir, obscurément la révélation de la charité, mais alors la présence de tout sera complète dans l'Écriture; maintenant je connais partiellement par les parchemins, mais alors je comprendrai pleinement comme j'ai été renseigné13 Maintenant donc, ces trois demeurent en permanence: la foi, l'espérance, la charité; mais la plus grande d'elles est la charité.
