1 And while Ezra prayed, and made confession, weeping and falling down before the house of God*GodHebrew: Elohim there were gathered to him out of Israel a very great congregation of men and women and children; for the people wept very much. 2 And Shechaniah the son of Jehiel, of the sons of Elam, answered and said to Ezra, We have acted unfaithfully toward our God*GodHebrew: Elohim and have taken foreign wives of the peoples of the land; yet now there is hope for Israel concerning this thing. 3 And now let us make a covenant with our God*GodHebrew: Elohim to put away all the wives, and such as are born of them, according to the counsel of my lord, and of those that tremble at the commandments of our God*GodHebrew: Elohim and let it be done according to the law. 4 Arise, for this matter is incumbent on thee, and we will be with thee: be of good courage, and do it. 5 Then Ezra arose, and made the chiefs of the priests, of the Levites, and of all Israel, to swear that they would do according to this word. And they swore.

6 And Ezra arose from before the house of God*GodHebrew: Elohim and went into the chamber of Jehohanan the son of Eliashib; and when he came thither, he ate no bread and drank no water; for he mourned because of the unfaithfulness of them that had been carried away. 7 And they made proclamation in Judah and Jerusalem to all the children of the captivity, that they should gather themselves together unto Jerusalem; 8 and that whosoever would not come within three days, according to the counsel of the princes and the elders, all his substance should be confiscated, and himself separated from the congregation of those that had been carried away. 9 Then were all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered together at Jerusalem within three days. It was the ninth month, on the twentieth of the month; and all the people sat in the open space of the house of God*GodHebrew: Elohim trembling because of the matter, and because of the pouring rain. 10 And Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, Ye have acted unfaithfully, and have taken foreign wives, to increase the trespass of Israel. 11 And now make confession to Jehovah the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of your fathers, and do his pleasure, and separate yourselves from the peoples of the land, and from the foreign wives. 12 And the whole congregation answered and said with a loud voice, Yes, it is for us to do according to thy words. 13 But the people are many, and it is a time of pouring rain, and it is not possible to stand without: neither is this a work for one day or two; for we are many that have transgressed in this thing. 14 Let now our princes, while this matter is going on, stand for all the congregation, and let all those that have taken foreign wives in our cities come at the appointed times, and with them the elders of every city, and the judges thereof, until the fierce anger of our God*GodHebrew: Elohim be turned from us.

15 Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahzeiah the son of Tikvah stood up against this; and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite helped them. 16 And the children of the captivity did so. And Ezra the priest and certain of the chief fathers were separated according to their fathers' houses, and all of them expressed by name; and they sat down on the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter. 17 And they ended with all the men that had taken foreign wives by the first day of the first month. 18 And among the sons of the priests there were found that had taken foreign wives, of the sons of Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and his brethren: Maaseiah, and Eliezer, and Jarib, and Gedaliah. 19 And they gave their hand to send away their wives; and they offered a ram of the flock, as trespass-offering for their guilt. 20 And of the children of Immer: Hanani, and Zebadiah. 21 And of the children of Harim: Maaseiah, and Elijah, and Shemaiah, and Jehiel, and Uzziah. 22 And of the children of Pashhur: Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethaneel, Jozabad, and Elasah. 23 And of the Levites: Jozabad, and Shimei, and Kelaiah (that is, Kelita), Pethahiah, Judah, and Eliezer. 24 And of the singers: Eliashib. And of the doorkeepers: Shallum, and Telem, and Uri. 25 And of Israel; of the children of Parosh: Ramiah, and Jizzijah, and Malchijah, and Mijamin, and Eleazar, and Malchijah, and Benaiah. 26 And of the children of Elam: Mattaniah, Zechariah, and Jehiel, and Abdi, and Jeremoth, and Elijah. 27 And of the children of Zattu: Elioenai, Eliashib, Mattaniah, and Jeremoth, and Zabad, and Aziza. 28 And of the children of Bebai: Jehohanan, Hananiah, Zabbai, Athlai. 29 And of the children of Bani: Meshullam, Malluch, and Adaiah, Jashub, and Sheal, and Ramoth. 30 And of the children of Pahath-Moab: Adna, and Chelal, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattaniah, Bezaleel, and Binnui, and Manasseh. 31 And the children of Harim: Eliezer, Jishijah, Malchijah, Shemaiah, Simeon, 32 Benjamin, Malluch, Shemariah. 33 Of the children of Hashum: Mattenai, Mattattah, Zabad, Eliphelet, Jeremai, Manasseh, Shimei. 34 Of the sons of Bani: Maadai, Amram, and Uel, 35 Benaiah, Bediah, Cheluhu, 36 Vaniah, Meremoth, Eliashib, 37 Mattaniah, Mattenai, and Jaasai, 38 and Bani, and Binnui, Shimei, 39 and Shelemiah, and Nathan, and Adaiah, 40 Machnadbai, Shashai, Sharai, 41 Azareel, and Shelemiah, Shemariah, 42 Shallum, Amariah, Joseph. 43 Of the children of Nebo: Jeiel, Mattithiah, Zabad, Zebina, Jaddai, and Joel, Benaiah. 44 All these had taken foreign wives; and there were among them wives who had had children.

1 Pe când*Dan. 9:20. stătea Ezra plângând și cu fața la pământ înaintea*2 Cron. 20:9. Casei lui Dumnezeu și făcea această rugăciune și mărturisire, se strânsese la el o mulțime foarte mare de oameni din Israel, bărbați, femei și copii, și poporul vărsa multe lacrimi. 2 Atunci, Șecania, fiul lui Iehiel, dintre fiii lui Elam, a luat cuvântul și a zis lui Ezra: „Am păcătuit*Neem. 13:27. împotriva Dumnezeului nostru ducându-ne la femei străine, care fac parte din popoarele țării. Dar Israel n-a rămas fără nădejde în această privință. 3 Să facem acum un legământ*2 Cron. 34:31. cu Dumnezeul nostru pentru izgonirea tuturor acestor femei și a copiilor lor, după părerea domnului meu și a celor ce se tem*Cap. 9:4. de poruncile*Deut. 7:2,3. Dumnezeului nostru. Și facă-se după Lege. 4 Scoală-te, căci treaba aceasta te privește! Noi vom fi cu tine. Îmbărbătează-te*1 Cron. 28:10. și lucrează!" 5 Ezra s-a sculat și a pus pe căpeteniile preoților, leviților și întregului Israel să jure*Neem. 5:12. că vor face ce se spusese. Și ei au jurat. 6 Apoi Ezra a plecat dinaintea Casei lui Dumnezeu și s-a dus în odaia lui Iohanan, fiul lui Eliașib. Când a intrat, n-a mâncat pâine*Deut. 9:18. și n-a băut apă, pentru că era mâhnit din pricina păcatului fiilor robiei. 7 S-a dat de veste în Iuda și la Ierusalim că toți fiii robiei trebuie să se adune la Ierusalim 8 și că, după părerea căpeteniilor și bătrânilor, oricui nu va veni în trei zile i se vor lua averile și el însuși va fi izgonit din adunarea fiilor robiei. 9 Toți bărbații lui Iuda și Beniamin s-au strâns la Ierusalim în trei zile. Era a douăzecea zi a lunii a noua. Tot poporul*1 Sam. 12:18. stătea pe locul deschis dinaintea Casei lui Dumnezeu, tremurând din pricina împrejurării aceleia și de ploaie. 10 Preotul Ezra s-a sculat și le-a zis: „Ați păcătuit luând femei străine și ați făcut pe Israel și mai vinovat. 11 Mărturisiți-vă acum*Ios. 7:19.Prov. 28:13. greșeala înaintea Domnului Dumnezeului părinților voștri și faceți voia Lui! Despărțiți-vă*Vers. 3. de popoarele țării și de femeile străine!" 12 Toată adunarea a răspuns cu glas tare: „Trebuie să facem cum ai zis! 13 Dar poporul este în mare număr, vremea este ploioasă și nu poate să rămână afară. De altfel, aceasta nu este treabă de o zi sau două, căci sunt mulți printre noi care au păcătuit în privința aceasta. 14 Să rămână dar toate căpeteniile noastre în locul întregii adunări. Și toți cei din cetățile noastre care s-au însurat cu femei străine să vină la timpuri hotărâte, cu bătrânii și judecătorii din fiecare cetate, până se va abate de la noi mânia*2 Cron. 30:8. aprinsă a Dumnezeului nostru din pricina întâmplării acesteia." 15 Ionatan, fiul lui Asael, și Iahzia, fiul lui Ticva, ajutați de Meșulam și de levitul Șabtai, au fost singurii împotriva acestei păreri 16 pe care au primit-o fiii robiei. Au ales pe preotul Ezra și capi de familii după casele lor părintești, toți numiți pe nume, și au stat în ziua întâi a lunii a zecea să cerceteze lucrul acesta. 17 În ziua întâi a lunii întâi, au isprăvit cu toți bărbații care se însuraseră cu femei străine. 18 Între fiii preoților, s-au găsit unii care se însuraseră cu femei străine: dintre fiii lui Iosua, fiul lui Ioțadac, și dintre frații săi: Maaseia, Eliezer, Iarib și Ghedalia, care s-au îndatorat, 19 dând*2 Împ. 10:15.1 Cron. 29:24.2 Cron. 30:8. mâna, să-și izgonească nevestele și să aducă un berbec ca jertfă pentru vină; 20 din fiii lui Imer: Hanani și Zebadia; 21 din fiii lui Harim: Maaseia, Ilie, Șemaia, Iehiel și Ozia; 22 din fiii lui Pașhur: Elioenai, Maaseia, Ismael, Netaneel, Iozabad și Eleasa. 23 Dintre leviți: Iozabad, Șimei, Chelaia, sau Chelita, Petahia, Iuda și Eliezer. 24 Dintre cântăreți: Eliașib. Dintre ușieri: Șalum, Telem și Uri. 25 Dintre cei din Israel: din fiii lui Pareoș, Ramia, Izia, Malchia, Miamin, Eleazar, Malchia și Benaia; 26 dintre fiii lui Elam: Matania, Zaharia, Iehiel, Abdi, Ieremot și Ilie; 27 dintre fiii lui Zatu: Elioenai, Eliașib, Matania, Ieremot, Zabat și Aziza; 28 dintre fiii lui Bebai: Iohanan, Hanania, Zabai și Atlai; 29 dintre fiii lui Bani: Meșulam, Maluc, Adaia, Iașub, Șeal și Ramot; 30 dintre fiii lui Pahat-Moab: Adna, Chelal, Benaia, Maaseia, Matania, Bețaleel, Binui și Manase; 31 dintre fiii lui Harim: Eliezer, Ișia, Malchia, Șemaia, Simeon, 32 Beniamin, Maluc și Șemaria; 33 dintre fiii lui Hașum: Matnai, Matata, Zabad, Elifelet, Ieremai, Manase și Șimei; 34 dintre fiii lui Bani: Maadai, Amram, Uel, 35 Benaia, Bedia, Cheluhu, 36 Vania, Meremot, Eliașib, 37 Matania, Matnai, Iaasai, 38 Bani, Binui, Șimei, 39 Șelemia, Natan, Adaia, 40 Macnadbai, Șașai, Șarai, 41 Azareel, Șelemia, Șemaria, 42 Șalum, Amaria și Iosif; 43 dintre fiii lui Nebo: Ieiel, Matitia, Zabad, Zebina, Iadai, Ioel și Benaia. 44 Toți aceștia luaseră femei străine și mulți avuseseră copii cu ele.
