1 Now Jericho was shut up and was barred, because of the children of Israel: none went out, and none came in. 2 And Jehovah said to Joshua, See, I have given into thy hand Jericho, and the king thereof, and the valiant men. 3 And ye shall go round the city, all the men of war, encompassing the city once. Thus shalt thou do six days. 4 And seven priests shall carry before the ark seven blast-trumpets; and on the seventh day ye shall go round the city seven times, and the priests shall blow with the trumpets. 5 And it shall come to pass when they make a long blast with the blast-horn, that all the people on hearing the sound of the trumpet shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall flat, and the people shall go up, each one straight before him.

6 And Joshua the son of Nun called the priests, and said to them, Carry the ark of the covenant, and seven priests shall carry seven blast-trumpets before the ark of Jehovah. 7 And he said to the people, Pass on, go round the city, and they that are armed shall pass on before the ark of Jehovah. 8 And it came to pass when Joshua had spoken to the people, that the seven priests carrying the seven blast-trumpets before Jehovah passed on and blew with the trumpets; and the ark of the covenant of Jehovah went after them. 9 And the armed men went before the priests who blew with the trumpets, and the rearguard came after the ark; they blew with the trumpets in marching. 10 And Joshua had commanded the people, saying, Ye shall not shout, nor let your voice be heard, neither shall a word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I say to you, Shout; then shall ye shout. 11 And the ark of Jehovah went round the city, encompassing it once; and they came into the camp, and lodged in the camp. 12 And Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priests carried the ark of Jehovah. 13 And the seven priests carrying the seven blast-trumpets before the ark of Jehovah went on and blew continually with the trumpets; and the armed men went before them, and the rearguard went after the ark of Jehovah; they blew with the trumpets in marching. 14 And on the second day they went round the city once, and returned into the camp. So they did six days. 15 And it was so that on the seventh day they rose early, about the morning-dawn, and went round the city after the same manner seven times; only on that day they went round the city seven times. 16 And it came to pass the seventh time, when the priests blew with the trumpets, that Joshua said to the people, Shout; for Jehovah has given you the city.

17 And the city shall be accursed, it and all that is in it, to Jehovah; only Rahab the harlot shall live, she and all that are with her in the house, because she hid the messengers that we sent. 18 But in any wise keep from the accursed thing, lest ye make yourselves accursed in taking of the accursed thing, and make the camp of Israel a curse, and trouble it. 19 And all the silver, and gold, and vessels of copper and iron, shall be holy to Jehovah; they shall come into the treasury of Jehovah. 20 And the people shouted, and they blew with the trumpets. And it came to pass when the people heard the sound of the trumpets, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat; and the people went up into the city, each one straight before him, and they took the city. 21 And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city; both man and woman, young and old, and ox, and sheep, and ass, with the edge of the sword. 22 And Joshua said to the two men that had spied out the country, Go into the harlot’s house and bring out thence the woman, and all that she has, as ye swore unto her. 23 And the young men, the spies, went in and brought out Rahab, and her father, and her mother, and her brethren, and all that she had: all her kindred did they bring out, and they left them outside the camp of Israel. 24 And they burned the city with fire, and all that was therein; only the silver, and the gold, and the vessels of copper and of iron, they put into the treasury of the house of Jehovah. 25 And Joshua saved alive Rahab the harlot, and her father’s household, and all that she had, and she dwelt in the midst of Israel to this day; because she hid the messengers whom Joshua had sent to spy out Jericho. 26 And Joshua swore at that time, saying, Cursed be the man before Jehovah who shall rise up and build this city Jericho! In his first-born shall he lay its foundation, and in his youngest son shall he set up its gates. 27 And Jehovah was with Joshua; and his fame was in all the land.

1 Ierihonul era închis și întărit de teama copiilor lui Israel. Nimeni nu ieșea din el și nimeni nu intra în el. 2 Domnul a zis lui Iosua: „Iată, dau*Cap. 2:9,24;8:1. în mâinile tale Ierihonul și pe împăratul*Deut. 7:24. lui, pe vitejii lui ostași. 3 Înconjurați cetatea voi, toți bărbații de război, dând ocol cetății o dată. Așa să faci șase zile. 4 Șapte preoți să poarte înaintea chivotului șapte trâmbițe de corn de berbec; în ziua a șaptea, să înconjurați cetatea de șapte ori, și preoții*Num. 10:8. să sune din trâmbițe. 5 Când vor suna lung din cornul de berbec și când veți auzi sunetul trâmbiței, tot poporul să scoată mari strigăte. Atunci, zidul cetății se va prăbuși și poporul să se suie fiecare drept înainte." 6 Iosua, fiul lui Nun, a chemat pe preoți și le-a zis: „Luați chivotul legământului și șapte preoți să poarte cele șapte trâmbițe de corn de berbec înaintea chivotului Domnului." 7 Și a zis poporului: „Porniți, înconjurați cetatea și bărbații înarmați să treacă înaintea chivotului Domnului." 8 După ce a vorbit Iosua poporului, cei șapte preoți care purtau înaintea Domnului cele șapte trâmbițe de corn de berbec au pornit și au sunat din trâmbițe. Chivotul legământului Domnului mergea în urma lor. 9 Bărbații înarmați mergeau înaintea preoților, care sunau din trâmbițe, și coada*Num. 10:25. oștirii mergea după chivot; în timpul mersului, preoții sunau din trâmbițe. 10 Iosua dăduse porunca aceasta poporului: „Voi să nu strigați, să nu vi se audă glasul și să nu vă iasă o vorbă din gură, până în ziua când vă voi spune: ‘Strigați!’ Atunci să strigați." 11 Chivotul Domnului a înconjurat cetatea și i-a dat ocol o dată, apoi au intrat în tabără și au rămas în tabără peste noapte. 12 Iosua s-a sculat cu noaptea-n cap și preoții*Deut. 31:25. au luat chivotul Domnului. 13 Cei șapte preoți care purtau cele șapte trâmbițe de corn de berbec înaintea chivotului Domnului au pornit și au sunat din trâmbițe. Bărbații înarmați mergeau înaintea lor, și coada oștirii venea după chivotul Domnului; în timpul mersului, preoții sunau din trâmbițe. 14 Au înconjurat cetatea o dată, a doua zi; apoi s-au întors în tabără. Au făcut același lucru timp de șase zile. 15 În ziua a șaptea, s-au sculat în zorii zilei și au înconjurat în același fel cetatea de șapte ori; aceasta a fost singura zi când au înconjurat cetatea de șapte ori. 16 A șaptea oară, pe când preoții sunau din trâmbițe, Iosua a zis poporului: „Strigați, căci Domnul v-a dat cetatea în mână! 17 Cetatea să fie dată Domnului spre nimicire, ea și tot ce se află în ea, dar să lăsați cu viață pe curva Rahav și pe toți cei ce vor fi cu ea în casă, pentru că a ascuns*Cap. 2:4. pe solii pe care-i trimiseserăm noi. 18 Feriți-vă numai de ceea ce va fi dat spre nimicire*Deut. 7:26;13:17. Cap. 7:1,11,12.; căci, dacă veți lua ceva din ceea ce va fi dat spre nimicire, veți face ca tabăra lui Israel să fie dată spre nimicire și o veți*Cap. 7:25.1 Împ. 18:17,18.Iona 1:12. nenoroci. 19 Tot argintul și tot aurul, toate lucrurile de aramă și de fier să fie închinate Domnului și să intre în vistieria Domnului." 20 Poporul a scos strigăte și preoții au sunat din trâmbițe. Când a auzit poporul sunetul trâmbiței, a strigat tare, și zidul*Vers. 5.Evr. 11:30. s-a prăbușit; poporul s-a suit în cetate, fiecare drept înainte. Au pus mâna pe cetate 21 și au nimicit-o*Deut. 7:2. cu desăvârșire, trecând prin ascuțișul sabiei tot ce era în cetate, bărbați și femei, copii și bătrâni, până la boi, oi și măgari. 22 Iosua a zis celor doi bărbați care iscodiseră țara: „Intrați în casa curvei și scoateți din ea pe femeia aceea și pe toți ai ei, cum*Cap. 2:14.Evr. 11:31. i-ați jurat." 23 Tinerii, iscoadele, au intrat și au scos pe Rahav, pe tatăl*Cap. 2:13. ei, pe mama ei, pe frații ei și pe toți ai ei; au scos afară pe toți cei din familia ei și i-au așezat afară din tabăra lui Israel. 24 Cetatea au ars-o împreună cu tot ce se afla în ea; numai argintul*Vers. 19., aurul și toate lucrurile de aramă și de fier le-au pus în vistieria Casei Domnului. 25 Iosua a lăsat cu viață pe curva Rahav, casa tatălui ei și pe toți ai ei; ea a locuit*Mat. 1:5. în mijlocul lui Israel până în ziua de azi, pentru că ascunsese solii pe care-i trimisese Iosua să iscodească Ierihonul.

26 Atunci a jurat Iosua și a zis: „Blestemat*1 Împ. 16:34. să fie înaintea Domnului omul care se va scula să zidească din nou cetatea aceasta a Ierihonului! Cu prețul întâiului său născut îi va pune temeliile și cu prețul celui mai tânăr fiu al lui îi va așeza porțile!" 27 Domnul*Cap. 1:5. a fost cu Iosua și i s-a dus vestea*Cap. 9:1,3. în toată țara.
