1 And Jehovah spoke to Joshua, saying, 2 Speak to the children of Israel, saying, Appoint for yourselves the cities of refuge, whereof I spoke unto you through Moses, 3 that the slayer who unwittingly without intent smiteth any one mortally may flee thither: and they shall be your refuge from the avenger of blood. 4 And he shall flee unto one of those cities and stand at the entrance of the city-gate, and shall declare his matter in the ears of the elders of that city; and they shall take him into the city unto them, and give him a place, that he may dwell among them. 5 And if the avenger of blood pursue after him, they shall not deliver the slayer up into his hand; for he smote his neighbour unwittingly, and hated him not previously. 6 And he shall dwell in that city, until he have stood before the assembly in judgment, until the death of the high-priest that shall be in those days; then shall the slayer return, and come unto his own city, and unto his own house, unto the city from whence he fled.

7 And they hallowed Kedesh in Galilee in the hill-country of Naphtali, and Shechem in the hill-country of Ephraim, and Kirjath-Arba, that is, Hebron, in the hill-country of Judah. 8 And beyond the Jordan from Jericho eastward, they assigned Bezer in the wilderness, in the plateau, out of the tribe of Reuben, and Ramoth in Gilead out of the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan of the tribe of Manasseh. 9 These were the cities appointed for all the children of Israel, and for the stranger that sojourneth among them, that whosoever smiteth any one mortally without intent might flee thither, and not die by the hand of the avenger of blood, until he stood before the assembly.

1 Domnul a vorbit lui Iosua și a zis: 2 „Vorbește copiilor lui Israel și spune-le: ‘Hotărâți-vă*Exod 21:13.Num. 35:6,11,14.Deut. 19:2,9., cum v-am poruncit prin Moise, cetăți de scăpare, 3 unde să poată fugi ucigașul care va omorî pe cineva fără voie, fără să aibă vreun gând să-l omoare; ele să vă fie un loc de scăpare împotriva răzbunătorului sângelui. 4 Ucigașul să fugă într-una din aceste cetăți, să se oprească la intrarea porții cetății*Rut 4:1,2. și să spună întâmplarea lui bătrânilor cetății aceleia; ei să-l primească la ei în cetate și să-i dea o locuință, ca să locuiască împreună cu ei. 5 Dacă*Num. 35:12. răzbunătorul sângelui îl va urmări, ei să nu dea pe ucigaș în mâinile lui, căci fără să vrea a omorât pe aproapele lui și fără să-i fi fost vrăjmaș mai înainte. 6 El să rămână în cetatea aceasta până*Num. 35:12,25. se va înfățișa înaintea adunării ca să fie judecat, până la moartea marelui preot care va fi atunci în slujbă. Atunci, ucigașul să se întoarcă și să intre iarăși în cetatea și în casa lui, în cetatea de unde fugise.’" 7 Ei au pus deoparte Chedeșul*Cap. 21:32.1 Cron. 6:76. în Galileea, în muntele lui Neftali, Sihemul*Cap. 21:21.2 Cron. 10:1. în muntele lui Efraim și Chiriat-Arba*Cap. 14:15;21:11,13., sau Hebronul, în muntele*Luca 1:39. lui Iuda. 8 Și de cealaltă parte a Iordanului, la răsăritul Ierihonului, a ales Bețerul*Deut. 4:43. Cap. 21:36.1 Cron. 6:78., în pustie, în câmpie, în seminția lui Ruben, Ramotul*Cap. 21:38.1 Împ. 22:33. în Galaad, în seminția lui Gad, și Golanul*Cap. 21:27. în Basan, în seminția lui Manase. 9 Acestea*Num. 35:15. au fost cetățile hotărâte pentru toți copiii lui Israel și pentru străinul care locuiește în mijlocul lor, pentru ca cel ce va ucide pe cineva fără voie să poată fugi în ele și să nu moară ucis de mâna răzbunătorului sângelui înainte*Vers. 6. de a se înfățișa înaintea adunării.
