1 And it came to pass when Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had taken Ai and had utterly destroyed it, that he had done to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king, and that the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them, 2 that they feared greatly; for Gibeon was a great city, as one of the royal cities, and it was greater than Ai, and all its men were mighty. 3 And Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem sent to Hoham king of Hebron, and to Piream king of Jarmuth, and to Japhia king of Lachish, and to Debir king of Eglon, saying, 4 Come up to me, and help me, that we may smite Gibeon; for it has made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel. 5 And the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon, gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their armies, and they encamped before Gibeon, and made war against it. 6 And the men of Gibeon sent to Joshua, to the camp at Gilgal, saying, Withdraw not thy hand from thy servants: come up to us quickly, and save us and help us; for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the hill-country are gathered against us.

7 So Joshua went up from Gilgal, he and all the people of war with him, even all the valiant men. 8 And Jehovah said to Joshua, Fear them not; for into thy hand have I given them: not a man of them shall stand before thee. 9 And Joshua came upon them suddenly; he went up from Gilgal all night. 10 And Jehovah discomfited them before Israel, and smote them with a great slaughter at Gibeon; and he chased them on the way of the ascent of Beth-horon, and smote them up to Azekah and Makkedah. 11 And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, — they were at the descent of Beth-horon, — that Jehovah cast down great stones from heaven upon them up to Azekah, and they died. They were more who died with the hailstones than they whom the children of Israel had slain with the sword. 12 Then spoke Joshua to Jehovah in the day when Jehovah gave up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand still upon Gibeon; And thou, moon, in the valley of Ajalon! 13 And the sun stood still, and the moon remained where it was, until the nation had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? And the sun remained standing in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a full day. 14 And there was no day like that before it or after it, that Jehovah hearkened to the voice of a man; for Jehovah fought for Israel.

15 And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp, to Gilgal. 16 And these five kings fled, and hid themselves in the cave at Makkedah. 17 And it was told Joshua, saying, The five kings have been found, hid in the cave at Makkedah. 18 And Joshua said, Roll great stones before the mouth of the cave, and set men before it to keep them. 19 And ye, stay not, pursue after your enemies, and smite the hindmost of them; suffer them not to enter into their cities; for Jehovah your God*GodHebrew: Elohim has given them into your hand. 20 And it came to pass when Joshua and the children of Israel had ended smiting them with a very great slaughter, until they were consumed, that the remnant which remained of them entered into fortified cities; 21 and all the people returned to the camp to Joshua, at Makkedah, in peace; none moved his tongue against the children of Israel. 22 And Joshua said, Open the mouth of the cave, and bring forth to me those five kings out of the cave. 23 And they did so, and brought forth to him those five kings out of the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon. 24 And it came to pass when they had brought forth those kings to Joshua, that Joshua called to all the men of Israel, and said to the captains of the men of war who went with him, Come forward, put your feet on the necks of these kings. And they came forward and put their feet on their necks. 25 And Joshua said to them, Fear not, neither be dismayed; be strong and courageous, for thus will Jehovah do to all your enemies against whom ye fight. 26 And afterwards Joshua smote them, and put them to death, and hanged them on five trees; and they were hanging upon the trees until the evening. 27 And it came to pass at the time of the going down of the sun, that Joshua commanded, and they took them down off the trees, and cast them into the cave where they had been hid, and laid great stones before the cave’s mouth, which remain to this very day.

28 And Joshua took Makkedah on that day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof, him and all the souls that were therein he utterly destroyed; he let none remain; and he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho. 29 And Joshua passed, and all Israel with him, from Makkedah to Libnah, and fought against Libnah. 30 And Jehovah gave it also and the king thereof into the hand of Israel; and he smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain in it: and he did to the king thereof as he had done to the king of Jericho. 31 And Joshua passed, and all Israel with him, from Libnah to Lachish, and encamped against it, and fought against it. 32 And Jehovah gave Lachish into the hand of Israel; and they took it on the second day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein, according to all that he had done to Libnah. 33 Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua smote him and his people, until he had left him none remaining. 34 And Joshua, and all Israel with him, passed from Lachish to Eglon; and they encamped against it, and fought against it. 35 And they took it on that day, and smote it with the edge of the sword; and all the souls that were therein he utterly destroyed on that day, according to all that he had done to Lachish. 36 And Joshua went up, and all Israel with him, from Eglon to Hebron; and they fought against it. 37 And they took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and all the souls that were therein: he let none remain, according to all that he had done to Eglon; and he utterly destroyed it, and all the souls that were therein. 38 And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to Debir; and fought against it. 39 And he took it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls that were therein; he let none remain: as he had done to Hebron, and as he had done to Libnah, and to the king thereof, so he did to Debir and to the king thereof. 40 And Joshua smote the whole country, the mountain, and the south, and the lowland, and the hill-slopes, and all their kings: he let none remain, but he utterly destroyed all that breathed, as Jehovah the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of Israel had commanded. 41 And Joshua smote them from Kadesh-barnea even to Gazah, and all the country of Goshen, even to Gibeon; 42 and all these kings and their land did Joshua take at one time; for Jehovah the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of Israel fought for Israel. 43 And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp, to Gilgal.

Cap. 9:15. cu Iosua și cu copiii lui Israel." 5 Cei cinci împărați ai amoriților: împăratul Ierusalimului, împăratul Hebronului, împăratul Iarmutului, împăratul Lachisului și împăratul Eglonului, s-au adunat*Cap. 9:2. astfel și s-au suit împreună cu toate oștile lor; au venit și au tăbărât lângă Gabaon și au început să lupte împotriva lui. 6 Oamenii din Gabaon au trimis să spună lui Iosua, în tabăra*Cap. 5:10;9:6. din Ghilgal: „Nu părăsi pe robii tăi, suie-te la noi în grabă, izbăvește-ne, dă-ne ajutor, căci toți împărații amoriților care locuiesc pe munte s-au strâns împotriva noastră." 7 Iosua s-a suit din Ghilgal, el și toți oamenii de război*Cap. 8:1. cu el și toți cei viteji. 8 Domnul a zis lui Iosua: „Nu te teme*Cap. 11:6.Jud. 4:14. de ei, căci îi dau în mâinile tale și niciunul*Cap. 1:5. din ei nu va putea să stea împotriva ta." 9 Iosua a venit fără veste peste ei, după ce a mers toată noaptea de la Ghilgal. 10 Domnul i-a pus*Jud. 4:15.1 Sam. 7:10,12.Ps. 18:14.Is. 28:21. în învălmășeală dinaintea lui Israel; și Israel le-a pricinuit o mare înfrângere la Gabaon, i-a urmărit pe drumul care suie la Bet-Horon*Cap. 16:3,5. și i-a bătut până la Azeca*Cap. 15:35. și până la Macheda. 11 Pe când fugeau ei dinaintea lui Israel și se coborau din Bet-Horon, Domnul*Ps. 18:13,14;77:17.Is. 30:30.Apoc. 16:21. a făcut să cadă din cer peste ei niște pietre mari până la Azeca și au pierit; cei ce au murit de pietrele grindinei au fost mai mulți decât cei uciși cu sabia de copiii lui Israel.

12 Atunci, Iosua a vorbit Domnului în ziua când a dat Domnul pe amoriți în mâinile copiilor lui Israel și a zis în fața lui Israel:

„Oprește-te, soare*Is. 28:21.Hab. 3:11., asupra Gabaonului

Și tu, lună, asupra văii*Jud. 12:12. Aialonului!"

13 Și soarele s-a oprit și luna și-a întrerupt mersul,

Până ce poporul și-a răzbunat pe vrăjmașii lui.

Lucrul acesta nu*2 Sam. 1:18. este scris oare în Cartea Dreptului?

Soarele s-a oprit în mijlocul cerului și nu s-a grăbit să apună aproape o zi întreagă. 14 N-a mai*Is. 38:8. fost nicio zi ca aceea, nici înainte, nici după aceea, când Domnul să fi ascultat glasul unui om, căci Domnul*Deut. 1:30. Vers. 42. Cap. 23:3. lupta pentru Israel. 15 Și Iosua*Vers. 43. și tot Israelul împreună cu el s-au întors în tabără, la Ghilgal.

16 Cei cinci împărați au fugit și s-au ascuns într-o peșteră la Macheda. 17 S-a spus lucrul acesta lui Iosua, zicând: „Cei cinci împărați se află ascunși într-o peșteră la Macheda." 18 Iosua a zis: „Prăvăliți niște pietre mari la intrarea peșterii și puneți niște oameni să-i păzească. 19 Și voi nu vă opriți, ci urmăriți pe vrăjmașii voștri și bateți-i pe dinapoi; nu-i lăsați să intre în cetățile lor, căci Domnul Dumnezeul vostru i-a dat în mâinile voastre." 20 După ce Iosua și copiii lui Israel le-au pricinuit o foarte mare înfrângere și i-au bătut cu desăvârșire, cei ce au putut scăpa au intrat în cetățile întărite 21 și tot poporul s-a întors liniștit în tabără la Iosua, în Macheda, fără ca cineva să fi crâcnit*Exod 11:7. cu limba lui împotriva copiilor lui Israel. 22 Iosua a zis atunci: „Deschideți intrarea peșterii, scoateți afară din ea pe cei cinci împărați și aduceți-i la mine." 23 Ei au făcut așa și au adus la el pe cei cinci împărați, pe care-i scoseseră din peșteră: pe împăratul Ierusalimului, pe împăratul Hebronului, pe împăratul Iarmutului, pe împăratul Lachisului și pe împăratul Eglonului. 24 După ce au adus pe acești împărați înaintea lui Iosua, Iosua a chemat pe toți bărbații lui Israel și a zis căpeteniilor oamenilor de război, care merseseră cu el: „Apropiați-vă și puneți-vă picioarele*Ps. 107:40;110:5;149:8,9.Is. 26:5,6.Mal. 4:3. pe grumajii împăraților acestora." Ei s-au apropiat și au pus picioarele pe grumajii lor. 25 Iosua le-a zis: „Nu vă temeți*Deut. 31:6,8. Cap. 1:9. și nu vă înspăimântați, ci întăriți-vă și îmbărbătați-vă, căci așa*Deut. 3:21;7:19. va face Domnul tuturor vrăjmașilor voștri împotriva cărora vă veți lupta." 26 După aceea, Iosua i-a lovit și i-a omorât; i-a spânzurat de cinci copaci și au rămas spânzurați*Cap. 8:29. de copaci până seara. 27 Pe la apusul soarelui, Iosua a poruncit să-i coboare*Deut. 21:23. Cap. 8:29. din copaci, i-au aruncat în peștera în care se ascunseseră și au pus la intrarea peșterii niște pietre mari, care au rămas acolo până în ziua de azi.

28 Iosua a luat Macheda chiar în ziua aceea și a trecut-o prin ascuțișul sabiei; a nimicit cu desăvârșire pe împărat, cetatea și pe toți cei ce se aflau în ea; n-a lăsat să scape niciunul și împăratului din Macheda i-a făcut cum*Cap. 6:21. făcuse împăratului Ierihonului. 29 Iosua, și tot Israelul împreună cu el, a trecut din Macheda la Libna și a dat luptă împotriva Libnei. 30 Domnul a dat-o și pe ea, împreună cu împăratul ei, în mâinile lui Israel și a trecut-o prin ascuțișul sabiei, pe ea și pe toți cei ce se găseau în ea; n-a lăsat să scape niciunul și a făcut împăratului ei cum făcuse împăratului Ierihonului. 31 Iosua, și tot Israelul împreună cu el, a trecut din Libna în Lachis, a tăbărât înaintea ei și a început lupta împotriva ei. 32 Domnul a dat cetatea Lachis în mâinile lui Israel, care a luat-o a doua zi și a trecut-o prin ascuțișul sabiei, pe ea și pe toți cei ce se aflau în ea, cum făcuse cu Libna. 33 Atunci, Horam, împăratul Ghezerului, s-a suit ca să dea ajutor Lachisului. Iosua l-a bătut, pe el și pe poporul lui, fără să lase pe cineva să scape. 34 Iosua, și tot Israelul împreună cu el, a trecut din Lachis la Eglon; a tăbărât înaintea ei și a început lupta. 35 A luat-o în aceeași zi și a trecut-o prin ascuțișul sabiei, pe ea și pe toți cei ce se aflau în ea; Iosua a nimicit-o cu desăvârșire chiar în ziua aceea, cum făcuse cu Lachisul. 36 Iosua, și tot Israelul împreună cu el, s-a suit din Eglon la Hebron*Cap. 14:13;15:13.Jud. 1:10. și a început lupta împotriva lui. 37 L-a luat și l-a trecut prin ascuțișul sabiei, pe el, pe împăratul lui, toate cetățile care țineau de el și pe toți cei ce se aflau în el; Iosua n-a lăsat pe niciunul să scape, cum făcuse cu Eglonul, și l-a nimicit cu desăvârșire împreună cu toți cei ce se aflau în el. 38 Iosua, și tot Israelul împreună cu el, s-a îndreptat împotriva Debirului*Cap. 15:15.Jud. 1:11. și a început lupta împotriva lui. 39 L-a luat pe el, pe împăratul lui și toate cetățile care țineau de el; le-a trecut prin ascuțișul sabiei și a nimicit cu desăvârșire pe toți cei ce se aflau în ele, fără să lase să scape vreunul; Iosua a făcut Debirului și împăratului lui cum făcuse Hebronului și cum făcuse Libnei și împăratului ei. 40 Iosua a bătut astfel toată țara, muntele, partea de miazăzi, câmpia și costișele și a bătut pe toți împărații; n-a lăsat să scape nimeni și a nimicit cu desăvârșire tot ce avea suflare, cum poruncise*Deut. 20:16,17. Domnul Dumnezeul lui Israel. 41 Iosua i-a bătut de la Cades-Barnea până la Gaza*Gen. 10:19., a bătut toată*Cap. 11:16. țara Gosen până la Gabaon. 42 Iosua a luat în același timp pe toți împărații aceia și țara lor, căci Domnul*Vers. 14. Dumnezeul lui Israel lupta pentru Israel. 43 Și Iosua, și tot Israelul împreună cu el, s-a întors în tabără la Ghilgal.
