1 And it came to pass when all the kings who were on this side the Jordan, in the hill-country, and in the lowland, and along all the coast of the great sea as far as opposite to Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard of it, 2 that they assembled together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.

3 And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and to Ai, 4 then they also acted with craft, and they went prepared as on a journey, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine-flasks, old and rent and tied up; 5 and old and patched sandals upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy. 6 And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said to him, and to the men of Israel, From a far country are we come; and now make a covenant with us. 7 And the men of Israel said to the Hivite, Perhaps thou dwellest in the midst of us, and how should I make a covenant with thee? 8 And they said unto Joshua, We are thy servants. And Joshua said to them, Who are ye? and from whence come ye? 9 And they said to him, From a very far country are thy servants come, because of the name of Jehovah thy God*GodHebrew: Elohim for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt, 10 and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites that were beyond Jordan, to Sihon the king of Heshbon, and to Og the king of Bashan, who was at Ashtaroth. 11 And our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spoke to us, saying, Take victuals in your hand for the way, and go to meet them, and say to them, We are your servants, and now make a covenant with us. 12 This our bread we took warm for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; and now, behold, it is dry, and is become mouldy. 13 And these flasks of wine which we filled new, behold, they are rent; and these our garments and our sandals are become old by reason of the very long journey. 14 And the men took of their victuals, but they did not inquire at the mouth of Jehovah.

15 And Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them, to let them live; and the princes of the assembly swore unto them. 16 And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a covenant with them, that they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they dwelt in their midst. 17 And the children of Israel journeyed, and came to their cities on the third day; and their cities were Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kirjath-jearim. 18 And the children of Israel did not smite them, because the princes of the assembly had sworn unto them by Jehovah the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of Israel. Then all the assembly murmured against the princes. 19 And all the princes said to all the assembly, We have sworn unto them by Jehovah the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of Israel, and now we may not touch them. 20 This we will do to them, and let them live, lest wrath come upon us, because of the oath which we swore unto them. 21 And the princes said to them, Let them live. And they were hewers of wood and drawers of water for all the assembly; as the princes had said to them.

22 And Joshua called for them, and he spoke to them, saying, Why have ye deceived us, saying, We are very far from you; whereas ye dwell in our midst? 23 And now ye are cursed, and ye shall never cease to be bondmen, and hewers of wood, and drawers of water for the house of my God*GodHebrew: Elohim24 And they answered Joshua and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants how that Jehovah thy God*GodHebrew: Elohim commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you; and we feared greatly for our lives because of you, and did this thing. 25 And now behold, we are in thy hand: as it is good and right in thine eyes to do to us, do. 26 And he did so to them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, and they did not slay them. 27 And Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the assembly, and for the altar of Jehovah, to this day, in the place which he should choose.

1 La auzul acestor lucruri, toți împărații care erau dincoace de Iordan, în munte și în vale și pe toată coasta*Num. 34:6. Mării celei Mari, până lângă Liban, hetiții*Exod 3:17;23:23., amoriții, canaaniții, fereziții, heviții și iebusiții 2 s-au unit*Ps. 83:3,5. împreună într-o înțelegere ca să lupte împotriva lui Iosua și împotriva lui Israel.

3 Locuitorii*Cap. 10:2.2 Sam. 21:1,2. din Gabaon*Cap. 6:27., de partea lor, când au auzit ce făcuse Iosua Ierihonului și cetății Ai, 4 au întrebuințat un vicleșug și au pornit la drum cu merinde pentru călătorie. Au luat niște saci vechi pe măgarii lor și niște burdufuri vechi pentru vin, rupte și cârpite, 5 iar în picioare purtau încălțăminte veche și cârpită și erau îmbrăcați cu niște haine vechi pe ei, iar toată pâinea pe care o aveau pentru hrană era uscată și mucegăită. 6 S-au dus la Iosua, în*Cap. 5:10. tabără la Ghilgal, și le-au zis lui și tuturor celor din Israel: „Noi venim dintr-o țară depărtată, acum deci faceți legământ cu noi." 7 Bărbații lui Israel au răspuns heviților*Cap. 11:19. acestora: „Poate că voi locuiți în mijlocul nostru, cum să*Exod 23:32.Deut. 7:2;20:16.Jud. 2:2. facem noi legământ cu voi?" 8 Ei au zis lui Iosua: „Noi*Deut. 20:11.2 Împ. 10:5. suntem robii tăi." Și Iosua le-a zis: „Cine sunteți voi și de unde veniți?" 9 Ei i-au răspuns: „Robii tăi vin dintr-o țară foarte*Deut. 20:15. depărtată, pentru faima Domnului Dumnezeului tău, căci am auzit*Exod 15:14. Cap. 2:10. vorbindu-se de El, de tot ce a făcut în Egipt 10 și de ce a*Num. 21:24,33. făcut celor doi împărați ai amoriților dincolo de Iordan, lui Sihon, împăratul Hesbonului, și lui Og, împăratul Basanului, care era la Aștarot. 11 Și bătrânii noștri și toți locuitorii din țara noastră ne-au zis: ‘Luați cu voi merinde pentru călătorie, duceți-vă înaintea lor și spuneți-le: «Noi suntem robii voștri; acum deci faceți legământ cu noi.»’ 12 Iată pâinea noastră: era caldă când am luat-o ca merinde de acasă, în ziua când am plecat să venim la voi, și acum s-a uscat și s-a mucegăit. 13 Burdufurile acestea de vin, când le-am umplut, erau noi de tot și iată-le, s-au rupt; hainele și încălțămintea noastră s-au învechit de lungimea prea mare a drumului." 14 Bărbații lui Israel au luat din merindele lor și n-au*Num. 27:21.Is. 30:1,2.Jud. 1:1.1 Sam. 22:10;23:10,11;30:8.2 Sam. 2:1;5:19. întrebat pe Domnul. 15 Iosua a făcut pace*Cap. 11:19.2 Sam. 21:2. cu ei și a încheiat un legământ prin care trebuia să-i lase cu viață, și căpeteniile adunării le-au jurat lucrul acesta. 16 La trei zile după încheierea acestui legământ, copiii lui Israel au aflat că erau vecini cu ei și că locuiau în mijlocul lor. 17 Căci copiii lui Israel au plecat și a treia zi au ajuns la cetățile lor; cetățile lor erau*Cap. 18:25,26,28.Ezra 2:25. Gabaon, Chefira, Beerot și Chiriat-Iearim. 18 Dar nu i-au bătut, pentru că*Ps. 15:4.Ecl. 5:2. fruntașii adunării le juraseră pe Domnul Dumnezeul lui Israel că-i vor lăsa cu viață. Și toată adunarea a cârtit împotriva căpeteniilor. 19 Toate căpeteniile au zis întregii adunări: „Le-am jurat pe Domnul Dumnezeul lui Israel, și acum nu putem să ne atingem de ei. 20 Iată ce le vom face: îi vom lăsa cu viață, ca să n-aducem peste*2 Sam. 21:1,2,6.Ezec. 17:13,15,18,19.Zah. 5:3,4.Mal. 3:5. noi mânia Domnului din pricina jurământului pe care li l-am făcut. 21 Să trăiască", le-au zis căpeteniile. Dar au fost întrebuințați la tăiat lemne*Deut. 29:11. și la scos apă pentru toată adunarea, cum*Vers. 15. le spuseseră căpeteniile. 22 Iosua i-a chemat și le-a vorbit astfel: „Pentru ce ne-ați înșelat zicând: ‘Suntem*Vers. 6,9. foarte departe de voi’, când voi*Cap. 9:16. locuiți în mijlocul nostru? 23 Acum sunteți blestemați*Gen. 9:25. și nu veți înceta să fiți în robie, să tăiați*Vers. 21,27. lemne și să scoateți apă pentru Casa Dumnezeului meu." 24 Ei au răspuns lui Iosua și au zis: „Robii tăi au auzit de poruncile*Exod 23:32.Deut. 7:1,2. date de Domnul Dumnezeul tău robului Său Moise, ca să vă dea în mână toată țara și să nimicească dinaintea voastră pe toți locuitorii ei; și venirea voastră a băgat mare frică*Exod 15:14. în noi cu privire la viața noastră: iată de ce am lucrat așa. 25 Și acum, iată-ne în mâinile*Gen. 16:6. tale; fă cu noi ce vei crede că este bine și drept să faci." 26 Iosua le-a făcut așa cum hotărâse; i-a izbăvit din mâna copiilor lui Israel, care nu i-au omorât, 27 dar din ziua aceea i-a pus să taie lemne*Vers. 21,23. și să scoată apă pentru adunare și pentru altarul Domnului în locul pe care l-ar alege Domnul: ceea ce fac până în ziua*Deut. 12:5. de azi.
