1 And the Angel of Jehovah came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you to the land which I swore unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you; and as for you, 2 ye shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall throw down their altars: but ye have not hearkened unto my voice. Why have ye done this? 3 Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be scourges in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you. 4 And it came to pass, when the Angel of Jehovah spoke these words to all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice and wept. 5 And they called the name of that place Bochim; and they sacrificed there to Jehovah.

6 And Joshua dismissed the people, and the children of Israel went every man to his inheritance to possess the land. 7 And the people served Jehovah all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders whose days were prolonged after Joshua, who had seen all the great works of Jehovah, which he had done for Israel. 8 And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Jehovah, died, a hundred and ten years old. 9 And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath-Heres, in mount Ephraim, on the north side of the mountain of Gaash. 10 And also all that generation were gathered to their fathers; and there arose another generation after them, which knew not Jehovah, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel. 11 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of Jehovah, and served the Baals. 12 And they forsook Jehovah the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of their fathers, who had brought them up out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods of the gods of the peoples that were round about them, and bowed themselves to them, and provoked Jehovah to anger. 13 And they forsook Jehovah, and served Baal and the Ashtoreths. 14 And the anger of Jehovah was hot against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers that spoiled them, and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about; and they could not any longer stand before their enemies. 15 Whithersoever they went out the hand of Jehovah was against them for evil, as Jehovah had said, and as Jehovah had sworn unto them; and they were greatly distressed. 16 And Jehovah raised up judges, and they saved them out of the hand of those that spoiled them. 17 But they did not even hearken to their judges, for they went a whoring after other gods, and bowed themselves to them; they turned quickly out of the way that their fathers had walked in, obeying the commandments of Jehovah; they did not so. 18 And when Jehovah raised them up judges, then Jehovah was with the judge, and saved them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for it repented Jehovah because of their groanings by reason of them that oppressed them and crushed them. 19 And it came to pass when the judge died, that they turned back and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down to them: they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their stubborn way. 20 And the anger of Jehovah was hot against Israel; and he said, Because this nation hath transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and hath not hearkened unto my voice, 21 I also will not henceforth dispossess from before them any of the nations that Joshua left when he died; 22 that through them I may prove Israel, whether they will keep the way of Jehovah to walk therein, as their fathers did keep it, or not. 23 Therefore Jehovah left those nations, without dispossessing them hastily, neither delivered he them into the hand of Joshua.

Am zis*Gen. 17:7.: ‘Niciodată nu voi rupe legământul Meu cu voi, 2 și voi*Deut. 7:2. să nu încheiați legământ cu locuitorii din țara aceasta, ci să le surpați*Deut. 12:3. altarele.’ Dar voi*Vers. 20.Ps. 106:34. n-ați ascultat de glasul Meu. Pentru ce ați făcut lucrul acesta? 3 Am zis atunci: ‘Nu-i voi izgoni dinaintea voastră, ci vă vor sta în coaste*Ios. 23:13. și dumnezeii*Cap. 3:6. lor vă vor fi o*Exod 23:33;34:12.Deut. 7:16.Ps. 106:36. cursă.’" 4 După ce a spus Îngerul Domnului aceste vorbe tuturor copiilor lui Israel, poporul a ridicat glasul și a plâns. 5 Au pus locului aceluia numele Bochim (Cei ce plâng) și au adus jertfe Domnului acolo.

6 Iosua*Ios. 22:6;24:28. a dat drumul poporului, și copiii lui Israel au plecat, fiecare, în moștenirea lui, ca să ia țara în stăpânire. 7 Poporul*Ios. 24:31. a slujit Domnului în tot timpul vieții lui Iosua și în tot timpul vieții bătrânilor care au trăit după Iosua și care văzuseră toate lucrurile mari pe care le făcuse Domnul pentru Israel. 8 Iosua*Ios. 24:29., fiul lui Nun, robul Domnului, a murit în vârstă de o sută zece ani. 9 L-au îngropat*Ios. 24:30. în ținutul pe care-l avea de moștenire, la Timnat-Heres*Ios. 19:50;24:30., în muntele lui Efraim, la miazănoapte de muntele Gaaș.

10 Tot neamul acela de oameni a fost adăugat la părinții lui și s-a ridicat după el un alt neam de oameni, care nu cunoștea*Exod 5:2.1 Sam. 2:12.1 Cron. 28:9.Ier. 9:3;22:16.Gal. 4:8.2 Tes. 1:8.Tit 1:16. pe Domnul, nici ce făcuse El pentru Israel. 11 Copiii lui Israel au făcut atunci ce nu plăcea Domnului și au slujit baalilor. 12 Au*Deut. 31:16. părăsit pe Domnul Dumnezeul părinților lor, care-i scosese din țara Egiptului, și au mers*Deut. 6:14. după alți dumnezei, dintre dumnezeii popoarelor care-i înconjurau; s-au închinat*Exod 20:5. înaintea lor și au mâniat pe Domnul. 13 Au părăsit pe Domnul și au slujit*Cap. 3:7;10:6.Ps. 106:36. lui Baal și astarteelor. 14 Domnul S-a aprins de mânie*Cap. 3:8.Ps. 106:40-42. împotriva lui Israel. El i-a dat*2 Împ. 17:20. în mâinile unor prădători care i-au prădat, i-a vândut*Cap. 3:8;4:2.Ps. 44:12.Is. 50:1. în mâinile vrăjmașilor lor de jur împrejur și nu s-au mai putut*Lev. 26:37.Ios. 7:12,13. împotrivi vrăjmașilor lor. 15 Oriunde mergeau, mâna Domnului era împotriva lor, ca să le facă rău, cum spusese Domnul și cum le*Lev. 26.Deut. 28. jurase Domnul. Au ajuns astfel într-o mare strâmtorare. 16 Domnul*Cap. 3:9,10,15.1 Sam. 12:11.Fapte 13:20. a ridicat judecători ca să-i izbăvească din mâna celor ce-i prădau. 17 Dar ei n-au ascultat nici de judecătorii lor, căci au curvit*Exod 24:15,16.Lev. 17:7. cu alți dumnezei și s-au închinat înaintea lor. În curând s-au abătut de la calea pe care o urmaseră părinții lor și n-au ascultat de poruncile Domnului, ca și ei. 18 Când le ridica Domnul judecători, Domnul era cu judecătorul*Ios. 1:5. și-i izbăvea din mâna vrăjmașilor lor în tot timpul vieții judecătorului, căci Domnului*Gen. 6:6.Deut. 32:36.Ps. 106:44,45. I se făcea milă de suspinele scoase de ei împotriva celor ce-i apăsau și-i chinuiau. 19 Dar, după moartea*Cap. 3:12;4:1;8:33. judecătorului, se stricau din nou, mai mult decât părinții lor, ducându-se după alți dumnezei, ca să le slujească și să se închine înaintea lor, și stăruiau în această purtare și împietrire. 20 Atunci, Domnul S-a aprins de*Vers. 14. mânie împotriva lui Israel și a zis: „Fiindcă neamul acesta a călcat legământul*Ios. 23:16. Meu pe care-l poruncisem părinților lor și fiindcă n-au ascultat de glasul Meu, 21 nu voi mai izgoni*Ios. 23:13. dinaintea lor niciunul din neamurile pe care le-a lăsat Iosua când a murit. 22 Astfel, prin ele*Deut. 8:2,16;13:3., voi pune pe Israel la încercare*Cap. 3:1,4., ca să știu dacă vor căuta sau nu să urmeze calea Domnului, cum au căutat părinții lor." 23 Și Domnul a lăsat în pace pe popoarele acelea pe care nu le dăduse în mâinile lui Iosua și nu S-a grăbit să le izgonească.
