1 And these are the nations that Jehovah left, to prove Israel by them, all that had not known all the wars of Canaan; 2 only that the generations of the children of Israel might know war by learning it, at the least those who before had known nothing thereof: 3 five lord ships of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites that dwell on mount Lebanon; from mount Baal-Hermon unto the entering into Hamath. 4 And they were to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would obey the commandments of Jehovah, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses. 5 And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites: Hittites and Amorites and Perizzites and Hivites and Jebusites; 6 and they took their daughters as wives, and gave their daughters to their sons, and served their gods. 7 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of Jehovah, and forgot Jehovah their God*GodHebrew: Elohim and served the Baals and the Asherahs.

8 And the anger of Jehovah was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Chushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia; and the children of Israel served Chushan-rishathaim eight years. 9 And the children of Israel cried to Jehovah; and Jehovah raised up a saviour to the children of Israel, who saved them, Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother. 10 And the Spirit of Jehovah was upon him, and he judged Israel; and he went out to war, and Jehovah gave Chushan-rishathaim king of Syria into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Chushan-rishathaim. 11 And the land had rest forty years; and Othniel the son of Kenaz died.

12 And the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of Jehovah; and Jehovah strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they did evil in the sight of Jehovah. 13 And he gathered to him the children of Ammon and Amalek and went and smote Israel, and they took possession of the city of palm-trees. 14 And the children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years. 15 And the children of Israel cried to Jehovah, and Jehovah raised them up a saviour, Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjaminite, a man left-handed. And by him the children of Israel sent a gift to Eglon king of Moab. 16 And Ehud made him a sword having two edges, it was of a cubit length; and he girded it under his raiment upon his right hip. 17 And he brought the gift to Eglon king of Moab; now Eglon was a very fat man. 18 And it came to pass when he had ended offering the gift, he sent away the people that had borne the gift. 19 But he turned from the graven images that were by Gilgal, and said, I have a secret word unto thee, O king. And he said, Be silent! And all that stood by him went out from him. 20 And Ehud came to him; now he was sitting in the cool upper-chamber, which was for him alone. And Ehud said, I have a word from God*GodHebrew: Elohim unto thee. And he arose from the seat. 21 Then Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the sword from his right hip, and thrust it into his belly; 22 and the haft also went in after the blade, and the fat closed upon the blade; for he did not draw the sword out of his belly, and it came out between the legs. 23 And Ehud went out into the portico, and shut the doors of the upper-chamber upon him, and bolted them. 24 And when he was gone out, the servants of the king came and saw, and behold, the doors of the upper-chamber were bolted. And they said, Surely he is covering his feet in the summer chamber. 25 And they waited till they were ashamed; and behold, he opened not the doors of the upper-chamber, and they took the key, and opened them, and behold, their lord lay dead on the earth. 26 And Ehud had escaped while they lingered, and passed beyond the graven images, and escaped to Seirah. 27 And it came to pass when he was come, that he blew a trumpet in the hill-country of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the hill-country, and he before them. 28 And he said to them, Follow after me, for Jehovah has delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of the Jordan toward Moab, and suffered no one to pass over. 29 And they slew the Moabites at that time, about ten thousand men, all fat, and all men of valour, and not a man escaped. 30 And Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest eighty years.

31 And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath; and he smote the Philistines, six hundred men, with an ox-goad. And he also delivered Israel.

7 Copiii*Cap. 2:11. lui Israel au făcut ce nu plăcea Domnului, au uitat pe Domnul și au slujit*Cap. 2:13. baalilor și idolilor*Exod 34:13.Deut. 16:21. Cap. 6:25.. 8 Domnul S-a aprins de mânie împotriva lui Israel și i-a vândut*Cap. 2:14. în mâinile lui Cușan-Rișeataim*Hab. 3:7., împăratul Mesopotamiei. Și copiii lui Israel au fost supuși opt ani lui Cușan-Rișeataim. 9 Copiii lui Israel au strigat*Vers. 15. Cap. 4:3;6:7;10:10.1 Sam. 12:10.Neem. 9:27.Ps. 22:5;106:44;107:13,19. către Domnul, și Domnul le-a ridicat un izbăvitor*Cap. 2:16., care i-a izbăvit: pe Otniel*Cap. 1:13., fiul lui Chenaz, fratele cel mai mic al lui Caleb. 10 Duhul*Num. 27:18. Cap. 6:34;11:29;13:25;14:6,19.1 Sam. 11:6.2 Cron. 15:1. Domnului a fost peste el. El a ajuns judecător în Israel și a pornit la război. Domnul a dat în mâinile lui pe Cușan-Rișeataim, împăratul Mesopotamiei, și mâna lui a fost puternică împotriva lui Cușan-Rișeataim. 11 Țara a avut odihnă patruzeci de ani. Și Otniel, fiul lui Chenaz, a murit.

12 Copiii*Cap. 2:19. lui Israel au făcut iarăși ce nu plăcea Domnului, și Domnul a întărit pe Eglon*1 Sam. 12:9., împăratul Moabului, împotriva lui Israel, pentru că făcuseră ce nu plăcea Domnului. 13 Eglon a strâns la el pe fiii lui Amon și pe amaleciți*Cap. 5:14. și a pornit. A bătut pe Israel și a luat cetatea finicilor*Cap. 1:16.. 14 Și copiii lui Israel au fost supuși*Deut. 28:48. optsprezece ani lui Eglon, împăratul Moabului. 15 Copiii lui Israel au*Vers. 9.Ps. 78:34. strigat către Domnul, și Domnul le-a ridicat un izbăvitor, pe Ehud, fiul lui Ghera, Beniamitul, care nu se slujea de mâna dreaptă. Copiii lui Israel au trimis prin el un dar lui Eglon, împăratul Moabului. 16 Ehud și-a făcut o sabie cu două tăișuri, lungă de un cot, și a încins-o pe sub haine, în partea dreaptă. 17 A dat darul lui Eglon, împăratul Moabului: Eglon era un om foarte gras. 18 Când a isprăvit de dat darul, a dat drumul oamenilor care-l aduseseră. 19 El însuși s-a întors*Ios. 4:20. de la pietrăriile de lângă Ghilgal și a zis: „Împărate, am să-ți spun ceva în taină." Împăratul a zis: „Tăcere!" Și toți cei ce erau lângă el au ieșit afară. 20 Ehud a început vorba cu el pe când stătea singur în odaia lui de vară și a zis: „Am un cuvânt din partea lui Dumnezeu pentru tine." Eglon s-a sculat de pe scaun. 21 Atunci, Ehud a întins mâna stângă, a scos sabia din partea dreaptă și i-a împlântat-o în pântece. 22 Chiar și mânerul a intrat după fier, și grăsimea s-a strâns în jurul fierului, căci n-a putut scoate sabia din pântece, ci a lăsat-o în trup, așa cum o înfipsese. 23 Ehud a ieșit prin tindă, a închis ușile de la odaia de sus după el și a tras zăvorul. 24 După ce a ieșit el, au venit slujitorii împăratului și s-au uitat și iată că ușile odăii de sus erau închise cu zăvorul. Ei au zis: „Fără îndoială, își acoperă picioarele în odaia de vară." 25 Au așteptat multă vreme și, fiindcă el nu deschidea ușile odăii de sus, au luat cheia și au descuiat și iată că stăpânul lor era mort, întins pe pământ. 26 Până să se dumirească ei, Ehud a luat-o la fugă, a trecut de pietrării și a scăpat în Seira. 27 Cum a ajuns, a sunat*Cap. 5:14;6:34.1 Sam. 13:3. din trâmbiță în muntele*Ios. 17:15. Cap. 7:24;17:1;19:1. lui Efraim. Copiii lui Israel s-au coborât cu el din munte și el s-a pus în fruntea lor. 28 El le-a zis: „Veniți după mine, căci Domnul*Cap. 7:9,15.1 Sam. 17:47. a dat în mâinile voastre pe vrăjmașii voștri moabiți." Ei s-au coborât după el, au pus stăpânire pe vadurile*Ios. 2:7. Cap. 12:5. Iordanului, în fața Moabului, și n-au lăsat pe nimeni să treacă. 29 Au ucis atunci aproape zece mii de oameni din Moab, toți voinici și viteji, și n-a scăpat unul. 30 În ziua aceea, Moabul a fost smerit sub mâna lui Israel. Și țara*Vers. 11. a avut odihnă optzeci de ani.

31 După el, a urmat Șamgar*Cap. 5:6,8., fiul lui Anat. El a ucis șase sute de oameni dintre filisteni cu un otic*1 Sam. 13:19,22;17:47,50. de plug. Și el a fost un izbăvitor*Cap. 2:16. al lui Israel*Cap. 4:1;10:7,17;11:4.1 Sam. 4:1..
