1 Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valour, and he was the son of a harlot; and Gilead had begotten Jephthah. 2 And Gilead’s wife bore him sons; and when his wife’s sons were grown, they expelled Jephthah, and said to him, Thou shalt not inherit in our father’s house; for thou art the son of another woman. 3 Then Jephthah fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tob. And vain men were gathered to Jephthah, and they made expeditions with him.

4 And it came to pass after some time, that the children of Ammon fought with Israel. 5 And when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah out of the land of Tob. 6 And they said to Jephthah, Come, and be our captain, that we may fight against the children of Ammon. 7 And Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, Did not ye hate me, and expel me out of my father’s house? and why are ye come to me now when ye are in trouble? 8 And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, Therefore we have returned to thee now, that thou mayest go with us, and fight against the children of Ammon, and be head over all of us the inhabitants of Gilead. 9 And Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, If ye take me back to fight against the children of Ammon, and Jehovah give them up before me, shall I be your head? 10 And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, Jehovah be witness between us, if we do not so according to thy words! 11 Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and captain over them; and Jephthah uttered all his words before Jehovah in Mizpah.

12 And Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the children of Ammon, saying, What hast thou to do with me, that thou art come against me to fight against my land? 13 And the king of the children of Ammon said to the messengers of Jephthah, Because Israel took away my land, when they came up out of Egypt, from the Arnon even unto the Jabbok and unto the Jordan; and now restore it peaceably. 14 And Jephthah sent messengers again to the king of the children of Ammon, 15 and said to him, Thus saith Jephthah: Israel took not away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon. 16 But when they came up from Egypt, then Israel walked through the wilderness as far as the Red sea, and came to Kadesh. 17 And Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, Let me, I pray thee, pass through thy land; but the king of Edom would not hearken. And they also sent to the king of Moab; and he would not. And Israel abode in Kadesh. 18 And they walked through the wilderness, and went round the land of Edom and the land of Moab, and came by the east of the land of Moab, and encamped beyond the Arnon, but came not within the border of Moab, for the Arnon is the border of Moab. 19 And Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon, and Israel said to him, Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land unto my place. 20 But Sihon trusted not Israel, to let him pass through his border, and Sihon gathered all his people, and they encamped in Jahzah; and he fought with Israel. 21 And Jehovah the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of Israel gave Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them; and Israel took possession of the whole land of the Amorites, who dwelt in that country. 22 And they possessed all the borders of the Amorites, from the Arnon unto the Jabbok, and from the wilderness unto the Jordan. 23 And now Jehovah the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of Israel has dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel, and shouldest thou take possession of it? 24 Dost not thou possess what Chemosh thy god puts thee in possession of? and whatever Jehovah our God*GodHebrew: Elohim has dispossessed before us, that will we possess. 25 And now art thou indeed better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he ever strive with Israel? did he ever fight against them? 26 While Israel dwelt in Heshbon and its dependent villages, and in Aroer and its dependent villages, and in all the cities that are along the banks of the Arnon, three hundred years — why did ye not recover them within that time? 27 So I have not sinned against thee, but it is thou who doest me wrong in making war against me. Jehovah, the Judge, be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon! 28 But the king of the children of Ammon hearkened not to the words of Jephthah that he had sent him.

29 Then the Spirit of Jehovah came upon Jephthah, and he passed through Gilead and Manasseh, and passed to Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over to the children of Ammon. 30 And Jephthah vowed a vow to Jehovah, and said, If thou wilt without fail give the children of Ammon into my hand, 31 then shall that which cometh forth from the door of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, be Jehovah’s, and I will offer it up for a burnt-offering. 32 And Jephthah passed over to the children of Ammon to fight against them; and Jehovah gave them into his hand. 33 And he smote them from Aroer until thou come to Minnith, twenty cities, even unto Abel-Cheramim, with a very great slaughter; and the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel. 34 And Jephthah came to Mizpah to his house, and behold, his daughter came out to meet him with tambours and with dances; and she was an only child: besides her he had neither son nor daughter. 35 And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his garments, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me; for I have opened my mouth to Jehovah, and I cannot go back. 36 And she said to him, My father, if thou hast opened thy mouth to Jehovah, do to me according to that which has proceeded out of thy mouth; forasmuch as Jehovah has taken vengeance for thee upon thine enemies, upon the children of Ammon. 37 And she said to her father, Let this thing be done for me: leave me alone two months, that I may go and descend to the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my companions. 38 And he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months. And she went with her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains. 39 And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned to her father, and he performed on her the vow that he had vowed; and she had known no man. And it became a fixed custom in Israel, 40 that from year to year the daughters of Israel go to celebrate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in the year.

Niște oameni*Cap. 9:4.1 Sam. 22:2. fără căpătâi s-au strâns la Iefta și făceau plimbări cu el. 4 După câtva timp, fiii lui Amon au pornit cu război împotriva lui Israel. 5 Și pe când fiii lui Amon făceau război cu Israel, bătrânii Galaadului s-au dus să caute pe Iefta din țara Tob. 6 Ei au zis lui Iefta: „Vino de fii căpetenia noastră și să batem pe fiii lui Amon." 7 Iefta a răspuns bătrânilor Galaadului: „Nu m-ați urât*Gen. 26:27. voi și nu m-ați izgonit voi din casa tatălui meu? Pentru ce veniți la mine acum, când sunteți în strâmtorare?" 8 Bătrânii*Cap. 10:18. Galaadului au zis lui Iefta: „Ne întoarcem*Luca 17:4. la tine acum ca să mergi cu noi, să bați pe fiii lui Amon și să fii căpetenia*Cap. 10:18. noastră, căpetenia tuturor locuitorilor Galaadului." 9 Iefta a răspuns bătrânilor Galaadului: „Dacă mă aduceți înapoi ca să bat pe fiii lui Amon și dacă Domnul îi va da înaintea mea, voi fi eu oare căpetenia voastră?" 10 Bătrânii Galaadului au zis lui Iefta: „Domnul*Ier. 42:5. să ne audă și să judece dacă nu vom face ce spui." 11 Și Iefta a pornit cu bătrânii Galaadului. Poporul l-a pus în fruntea lui și l-a așezat căpetenie*Vers. 8., și Iefta a spus din nou înaintea*Cap. 10:17;20:1.1 Sam. 10:17;11:15. Domnului, la Mițpa, toate cuvintele pe care le rostise.

12 Iefta a trimis soli împăratului fiilor lui Amon ca să-i spună: „Ce ai cu mine de vii împotriva mea să faci război împotriva țării mele?" 13 Împăratul fiilor lui Amon a răspuns solilor lui Iefta: „Pentru că*Num. 21:24-26. Israel, când s-a suit din Egipt, a pus mâna pe țara mea, de la Arnon până la Iaboc*Gen. 32:22. și Iordan. Dă-mi-o înapoi acum de bunăvoie." 14 Iefta a trimis iarăși soli împăratului fiilor lui Amon 15 ca să-i spună: „Așa vorbește Iefta: ‘Israel*Deut. 2:9,19. n-a pus mâna pe țara Moabului, nici pe țara fiilor lui Amon. 16 Căci, când s-a suit Israel din Egipt, a mers*Num. 14:25.Deut. 1:40.Ios. 5:6. în pustie până la Marea Roșie și a ajuns la Cades*Num. 13:26;20:1.Deut. 1:46.. 17 Atunci, Israel a trimis*Num. 20:14. soli împăratului Edomului ca să-i spună: «Lasă-mă să trec prin țara ta.» Dar*Num. 20:18,21. împăratul Edomului n-a voit. A trimis și la împăratul Moabului, și nici el n-a vrut. Și Israel a rămas la*Num. 20:1. Cades. 18 Apoi a mers prin pustie, a ocolit*Num. 21:4.Deut. 2:1-8. țara Edomului și țara Moabului și a venit*Num. 21:11. la răsăritul țării Moabului; au tăbărât*Num. 21:13;22:36. dincolo de Arnon, fără să intre pe ținutul Moabului, căci Arnonul era hotarul Moabului. 19 Israel a trimis*Num. 21:21.Deut. 2:26. soli lui Sihon, împăratul amoriților, împăratul Hesbonului. Și Israel i-a zis: «Lasă-mă să trec prin*Num. 21:22.Deut. 2:27. țara ta până la locul spre care mergem.» 20 Dar Sihon*Num. 21:23.Deut. 2:32. n-a avut încredere în Israel, ca să-l lase să treacă pe ținutul lui, și-a strâns tot poporul, a tăbărât la Iahat și a luptat împotriva lui Israel. 21 Domnul Dumnezeul lui Israel a dat pe Sihon și pe tot poporul lui în mâinile lui Israel, care i-a bătut*Num. 21:24,25.Deut. 2:33,34.. Israel a pus mâna pe toată țara amoriților care erau așezați în țara aceasta. 22 Au pus mâna pe tot ținutul amoriților*Deut. 2:36., de la Arnon până la Iaboc și de la pustie până la Iordan. 23 Și acum, când Domnul Dumnezeul lui Israel a izgonit pe amoriți dinaintea poporului Său Israel, tu să le stăpânești țara? 24 Oare ce-ți dă în stăpânire dumnezeul tău, Chemoș*Num. 21:29.1 Împ. 11:7.Ier. 48:7., nu vei stăpâni? Și tot ce ne-a dat în stăpânire Domnul*Deut. 9:4,5;18:12.Ios. 3:10. Dumnezeul nostru, înaintea noastră, noi să nu stăpânim? 25 Ești tu mai bun decât Balac*Num. 22:2.Ios. 24:9., fiul lui Țipor, împăratul Moabului? S-a certat el cu Israel sau a făcut el război împotriva lui? 26 Iată că sunt trei sute de ani de când locuiește Israel la Hesbon*Num. 21:25. și în satele din jurul lui, la Aroer*Deut. 2:36. și în satele din jurul lui și în toate cetățile care sunt pe malul Arnonului. Pentru ce nu i le-ați luat în tot timpul acesta? 27 Eu nu te-am supărat deloc, și rău te-ai purtat cu mine, făcându-mi război. Domnul să judece*Gen. 18:25. lucrul acesta. El să fie astăzi judecător*Gen. 16:5;31:53.1 Sam. 24:12,15. între fiii lui Israel și fiii lui Amon.’" 28 Împăratul fiilor lui Amon n-a ascultat cuvintele pe care a trimis Iefta să i le spună.

29 Duhul*Cap. 3:10. Domnului a venit peste Iefta. Iefta a străbătut Galaadul și Manase; a trecut la Mițpe, în Galaad, și din Mițpe, din Galaad, a pornit împotriva fiilor lui Amon. 30 Iefta a făcut o juruință*Gen. 28:20.1 Sam. 1:11. Domnului și a zis: „Dacă vei da în mâinile mele pe fiii lui Amon, 31 oricine va ieși pe porțile casei mele înaintea mea, la întoarcerea mea fericită de la fiii lui Amon, va*Lev. 27:2,3.1 Sam. 1:11,28;2:18. fi închinat Domnului și-l voi*Ps. 66:13.Lev. 27:11,12. aduce ca ardere-de-tot." 32 Iefta a pornit împotriva fiilor lui Amon și Domnul i-a dat în mâinile lui. 33 Le-a pricinuit o foarte mare înfrângere, de la Aroer până spre*Ezec. 27:17. Minit, loc care cuprindea douăzeci de cetăți, și până la Abel-Cheramim. Și fiii lui Amon au fost smeriți înaintea copiilor lui Israel. 34 Iefta s-a întors acasă la Mițpa*Cap. 10:17;11:11.. Și iată că fiică-sa*Exod 15:20.1 Sam. 18:6.Ps. 68:25.Ier. 31:4. i-a ieșit înainte cu timpane și jocuri. Ea era singurul lui copil; n-avea fii și nici altă fată. 35 Cum a văzut-o, el și-a rupt*Gen. 37:29,34. hainele și a zis: „Ah, fata mea, adânc mă lovești și mă tulburi! Am făcut o*Ecl. 5:2. juruință Domnului și n-o pot*Num. 30:2.Ps. 15:4.Ecl. 5:4,5. întoarce." 36 Ea i-a zis: „Tată, ai făcut o juruință Domnului, fă-mi*Num. 30:2. potrivit cu ceea ce ți-a ieșit din gură, acum, când*2 Sam. 18:19,31. Domnul te-a răzbunat pe vrăjmașii tăi, pe fiii lui Amon." 37 Și ea a zis tatălui său: „Atât îngăduie-mi: lasă-mă slobodă două luni, ca să mă duc să mă cobor în munți și să-mi plâng fecioria cu tovarășele mele." 38 El a răspuns: „Du-te!" Și a lăsat-o slobodă două luni. Ea s-a dus cu tovarășele ei și și-a plâns fecioria pe munți. 39 După cele două luni, s-a întors la tatăl ei și el a împlinit*Vers. 31.1 Sam. 1:22,24;2:18. cu ea juruința pe care o făcuse. Ea nu cunoscuse împreunarea cu bărbat. De atunci s-a făcut în Israel obiceiul 40 că, în toți anii, fetele lui Israel se duc să prăznuiască pe fiica lui Iefta, Galaaditul, patru zile pe an.
