1 And the men of Ephraim were called together, and passed over northwards, and said to Jephthah, Why didst thou pass over to fight against the children of Ammon, and didst not call us to go with thee? We will burn thy house upon thee with fire. 2 And Jephthah said to them, I was at great strife, I and my people, with the children of Ammon; and I called you, but ye saved me not out of their hand. 3 And when I saw that ye would not save me, I put my life in my hand, and passed over against the children of Ammon, and Jehovah gave them into my hand. Why then are ye come up to me this day, to fight against me? 4 And Jephthah gathered together all the men of Gilead, and fought with Ephraim; and the men of Gilead smote Ephraim, because they said, Ye, Gilead, ye are fugitives of Ephraim in the midst of Ephraim, and in the midst of Manasseh. 5 And Gilead took the fords of the Jordan before Ephraim; and it came to pass that when the fugitives of Ephraim said, Let me go over, the men of Gilead said to him, Art thou an Ephraimite? and he said, No. 6 Then they said to him, Say now Shibboleth! and he said, Sibboleth, and did not manage to pronounce it rightly. Then they took him, and slaughtered him at the fords of the Jordan. And there fell at that time of Ephraim forty-two thousand. 7 And Jephthah judged Israel six years. And Jephthah the Gileadite died, and was buried in one of the cities of Gilead.

8 And after him Ibzan of Bethlehem judged Israel. 9 And he had thirty sons; and thirty daughters he sent out of the house, and thirty daughters he took in from abroad for his sons. And he judged Israel seven years. 10 And Ibzan died, and was buried at Bethlehem. 11 And after him Elon, the Zebulonite, judged Israel; and he judged Israel ten years. 12 And Elon the Zebulonite died, and was buried in Ajalon in the land of Zebulun. 13 And after him Abdon the son of Hillel, the Pirathonite, judged Israel. 14 And he had forty sons and thirty grandsons, who rode on seventy ass colts. And he judged Israel eight years. 15 And Abdon the son of Hillel, the Pirathonite, died, and was buried in Pirathon in the land of Ephraim, in the hill-country of the Amalekites.

Domnul i-a dat în mâinile mele. Pentru ce vă suiți dar azi împotriva mea ca să-mi faceți război?" 4 Iefta a strâns pe toți bărbații Galaadului și a început lupta cu Efraim. Bărbații Galaadului au bătut pe Efraim, pentru că efraimiții ziceau: „Sunteți niște fugari*1 Sam. 25:10.Ps. 78:9. ai lui Efraim! Galaadul este în mijlocul lui Efraim, în mijlocul lui Manase!" 5 Galaadiții au pus mâna pe vadurile*Ios. 22:11. Cap. 3:28;7:24. Iordanului dinspre Efraim. Și când unul din fugarii lui Efraim zicea: „Lasă-mă să trec!", bărbații Galaadului îl întrebau: „Ești efraimit?" Dacă răspundea: „Nu", 6 atunci îi ziceau: „Ei bine, zi Șibolet." Și el zicea Sibolet, căci nu putea să-l spună bine. Atunci, bărbații Galaadului îl apucau și-l junghiau lângă vadurile Iordanului. Astfel au pierit în vremea aceea patruzeci și două de mii de bărbați din Efraim. 7 Iefta a fost judecător în Israel zece ani, apoi Iefta, Galaaditul, a murit și a fost îngropat într-una din cetățile Galaadului.

8 După el, a fost judecător în Israel Ibțan din Betleem. 9 El a avut treizeci de fii, a măritat treizeci de fete în afară și a adus pentru fiii lui treizeci de fete de afară. El a fost judecător în Israel șapte ani, 10 apoi Ibțan a murit și a fost îngropat în Betleem. 11 După el a fost judecător în Israel Elon din Zabulon. El a fost judecător în Israel zece ani, 12 apoi Elon din Zabulon a murit și a fost îngropat la Aialon, în țara lui Zabulon. 13 După el, a fost judecător în Israel Abdon, fiul lui Hilel, Piratonitul. 14 El a avut patruzeci de fii și treizeci de nepoți, care călăreau*Cap. 5:10;10:4. pe șaptezeci de mânji de măgari. El a fost judecător în Israel opt ani, 15 apoi Abdon, fiul lui Hilel, Piratonitul, a murit și a fost îngropat la Piraton, în țara lui Efraim, pe muntele*Cap. 3:13,27;5:14. amaleciților.
