1 And when Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she rose up and destroyed all the royal seed. 2 But Jehosheba, the daughter of king Joram, the sister of Ahaziah, took Joash the son of Ahaziah and stole him from among the king’s sons that were slain, and hid him and his nurse in the bedchamber; and they hid him from Athaliah, so that he was not slain. 3 And he was with her hid in the house of Jehovah six years. And Athaliah reigned over the land.

4 And in the seventh year Jehoiada sent and fetched the captains of the hundreds, of the bodyguard and the couriers, and brought them to him into the house of Jehovah, and made a covenant with them, and took an oath of them in the house of Jehovah, and shewed them the king’s son. 5 And he commanded them saying, This is the thing which ye shall do: a third part of you, that come in on the sabbath, shall be keepers of the watch of the king’s house; 6 and a third part shall be at the gate of Sur; and a third part at the gate behind the couriers; and ye shall keep the watch of the house for a defence. 7 And the two parts of you, all those that go forth on the sabbath, even they shall keep the watch of the house of Jehovah about the king. 8 And ye shall encompass the king round about, every man with his weapons in his hand; and he that comes within the ranks shall be put to death; and ye shall be with the king when he goes out and when he comes in. 9 And the captains of the hundreds did according to all that Jehoiada the priest commanded; and they took every man his men, those that were to come in on the sabbath, with them that were to go forth on the sabbath, and they came to Jehoiada the priest. 10 And the priest gave to the captains of the hundreds king David’s spears and shields which were in the house of Jehovah. 11 And the couriers stood by the king round about, every man with his weapons in his hand, from the right side of the house to the left side of the house, toward the altar and the house. 12 And he brought forth the king’s son, and put the crown upon him, and gave him the testimony; and they made him king, and anointed him; and they clapped their hands, and said, Long live the king!

13 And Athaliah heard the noise of the couriers and of the people; and she came to the people into the house of Jehovah. 14 And she looked, and behold, the king stood on the dais, according to the custom, and the princes and the trumpeters were by the king; and all the people of the land rejoiced, and blew with trumpets. And Athaliah rent her garments and cried, Conspiracy! Conspiracy! 15 And Jehoiada the priest commanded the captains of the hundreds that were set over the host, and said to them, Lead her forth without the ranks; and whosoever follows her, slay with the sword; for the priest said, Let her not be put to death in the house of Jehovah. 16 And they made way for her, and she went by the way by which the horses entered the king’s house, and there was she put to death.

17 And Jehoiada made a covenant between Jehovah and the king and the people, that they should be the people of Jehovah; and between the king and the people. 18 Then all the people of the land went into the house of Baal, and broke it down: his altars and his images they broke in pieces completely, and slew Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars. And the priest appointed officers over the house of Jehovah. 19 And he took the captains of the hundreds, and the bodyguard, and the couriers, and all the people of the land; and they brought down the king from the house of Jehovah, and came by the way through the gate of the couriers into the king’s house. And he sat upon the throne of the kings. 20 And all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet; and they had slain Athaliah with the sword beside the king’s house. 21 Jehoash was seven years old when he began to reign.

1 Atalia*2 Cron. 22:10., mama*Cap. 8:26. lui Ahazia, văzând că fiul ei a murit, s-a sculat și a omorât pe toți cei de neam împărătesc. 2 Dar Ioșeba, fata împăratului Ioram, sora lui Ahazia, a luat pe Ioas, fiul lui Ahazia, și l-a ridicat din mijlocul fiilor împăratului când i-a omorât: l-a pus împreună cu doica lui în odaia paturilor. Astfel a fost ascuns de privirile Ataliei și n-a fost omorât. 3 A stat șase ani ascuns cu Ioșeba în Casa Domnului. Și în țară domnea Atalia.

4 În anul*2 Cron. 23:1. al șaptelea, Iehoiada a trimis și a luat pe sutașii cheretiților și alergătorilor și i-a adus la el, în Casa Domnului. A făcut legământ cu ei, i-a pus să jure în Casa Domnului și le-a arătat pe fiul împăratului. 5 Apoi le-a poruncit astfel: „Iată ce aveți să faceți. O treime din voi, care intră de slujbă în ziua Sabatului*1 Cron. 9:25., să facă de strajă la casa împăratului, 6 o treime la poarta Sur și o treime la poarta dinapoia alergătorilor; să păziți bine casa, așa încât să nu lăsați pe nimeni să intre. 7 Celelalte două cete ale voastre, toți cei ce ies din slujbă în ziua Sabatului, vor păzi Casa Domnului de lângă împărat; 8 să înconjurați pe împărat din toate părțile, fiecare cu armele în mână, și să omorâți pe oricine va intra în șirurile voastre; să fiți lângă împărat când va ieși și când va intra." 9 Sutașii*2 Cron. 23:8. au îndeplinit toate poruncile pe care le dăduse preotul Iehoiada. Și-a luat fiecare oamenii, pe cei ce intrau în slujbă și pe cei ce ieșeau din slujbă în ziua Sabatului, și s-au dus la preotul Iehoiada. 10 Preotul a dat sutașilor sulițele și scuturile care veneau de la împăratul David și care se aflau în Casa Domnului. 11 Alergătorii, fiecare cu armele în mână, au înconjurat pe împărat, așezându-se de la latura dreaptă până la latura stângă a casei, lângă altar și lângă casă. 12 Preotul a adus înainte pe fiul împăratului și i-a pus cununa împărătească și mărturia. L-au pus împărat, l-au uns și, bătând din palme, au zis: „Trăiască*1 Sam. 10:24. împăratul!" 13 Atalia a auzit*2 Cron. 23:12. vuietul alergătorilor și al poporului și a venit la popor în Casa Domnului. 14 S-a uitat. Și iată că împăratul stătea pe scaunul împărătesc*Cap. 23:3.2 Cron. 34:31., după datină. Căpeteniile și trâmbițele erau lângă împărat: tot poporul țării se bucura și suna din trâmbițe. Atalia și-a sfâșiat hainele și a strigat: „Vânzare! Vânzare!" 15 Atunci, preotul Iehoiada a dat următoarea poruncă sutașilor care erau în fruntea oștirii: „Scoateți-o afară din șiruri și ucideți cu sabia pe oricine va merge după ea!" Căci preotul zisese: „Să nu fie omorâtă în Casa Domnului!" 16 I-au făcut loc și s-a dus la casa împăratului pe drumul pe care intrau caii: acolo a fost omorâtă. 17 Iehoiada*2 Cron. 23:16. a făcut un legământ între Domnul, împărat și popor, prin care ei aveau să fie poporul Domnului; a încheiat și un legământ între împărat*2 Sam. 5:3. și popor. 18 Tot poporul țării a intrat în templul lui Baal*Cap. 10:26. și l-a dărâmat, i-a sfărâmat*Deut. 12:3.2 Cron. 23:17. cu desăvârșire altarele și icoanele și a ucis înaintea altarelor pe Matan, preotul lui Baal. Preotul Iehoiada a pus străjeri*2 Cron. 23:18. în Casa Domnului. 19 A luat pe sutași, pe cheretiți și pe alergători și pe tot poporul țării, au coborât pe împărat din Casa Domnului și au intrat în casa împăratului, pe drumul care duce la poarta alergătorilor. Și Ioas a șezut pe scaunul de domnie al împăraților. 20 Tot poporul țării se bucura și cetatea era liniștită. Pe Atalia o omorâseră cu sabia în casa împăratului.

21 Ioas avea șapte*2 Cron. 24:1. ani când a ajuns împărat.
