1 And it came to pass when king Hezekiah heard it, that he rent his garments, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of Jehovah. 2 And he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, to the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz. 3 And they said to him, Thus says Hezekiah: This day is a day of trouble and of rebuke and of reviling; for the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth. 4 It may be Jehovah thy God*GodHebrew: Elohim will hear all the words of Rab-shakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master has sent to reproach the living God*GodHebrew: Elohim and will rebuke the words which Jehovah thy God*GodHebrew: Elohim has heard. Therefore lift up a prayer for the remnant that is left. 5 And the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah. 6 And Isaiah said to them, Thus shall ye say to your master: Thus saith Jehovah: Be not afraid of the words that thou hast heard, wherewith the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me. 7 Behold, I will put a spirit into him, and he shall hear tidings, and shall return to his own land; and I will make him to fall by the sword in his own land.

8 And Rab-shakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah; for he had heard that he had departed from Lachish. 9 And he heard say of Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, Behold, he has come forth to make war with thee. And he sent messengers again to Hezekiah, saying, 10 Thus shall ye speak to Hezekiah king of Judah saying: Let not thy God*GodHebrew: Elohim upon whom thou reliest, deceive thee, saying, Jerusalem shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria. 11 Behold, thou hast heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all countries, destroying them utterly; and shalt thou be delivered? 12 Have the gods of the nations which my fathers have destroyed delivered them: Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of Eden that were in Thelassar? 13 Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, of Hena, and Ivvah? 14 And Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it; and Hezekiah went up into the house of Jehovah, and spread it before Jehovah. 15 And Hezekiah prayed before Jehovah and said, Jehovah, God*GodHebrew: Elohim of Israel, who sittest between the cherubim, thou, the Same, thou alone art the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of all the kingdoms of the earth: thou hast made the heavens and the earth. 16 Incline thine ear, Jehovah, and hear; open, Jehovah, thine eyes, and see; and hear the words of Sennacherib, who hath sent him to reproach the living God*GodHebrew: Elohim17 Of a truth, Jehovah, the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations and their lands, 18 and have cast their gods into the fire; for they were no gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone; therefore have they destroyed them. 19 And now, Jehovah our God*GodHebrew: Elohim I beseech thee, save us out of his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou, Jehovah, art God*GodHebrew: Elohim thou only.

20 And Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, Thus saith Jehovah the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of Israel: That which thou hast prayed to me concerning Sennacherib king of Assyria I have heard. 21 This is the word that Jehovah has spoken against him: The virgin-daughter of Zion despiseth thee, laugheth thee to scorn; The daughter of Jerusalem shaketh her head at thee. 22 Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed? and against whom hast thou exalted the voice? Against the Holy one of Israel hast thou lifted up thine eyes on high. 23 By thy messengers thou hast reproached the Lord, and hast said, With the multitude of my chariots have I come up To the height of the mountain, to the recesses of Lebanon, And I will cut down its tall cedars, the choice of its cypresses; And I will enter into its furthest lodging-place, into the forest of its fruitful field. 24 I have digged, and have drunk strange waters, And with the sole of my feet have I dried up all the streams of Matsor. 25 Hast thou not heard long ago that I have done it? And that from ancient days I formed it? Now have I brought it to pass, that thou shouldest lay waste fortified cities into ruinous heaps. 26 And their inhabitants were powerless, They were dismayed and put to shame; They were as the growing grass, and as the green herb, As the grass on the housetops, and grain blighted before it be grown up. 27 But I know thine abode, and thy going out, and thy coming in, And thy raging against me. 28 Because thy raging against me and thine arrogance is come up into mine ears, I will put my ring in thy nose, and my bridle in thy lips, And I will make thee go back by the way by which thou camest. 29 And this shall be the sign unto thee: They shall eat this year such as groweth of itself, And in the second year that which springeth of the same; But in the third year sow ye and reap, And plant vineyards and eat the fruit thereof. 30 And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah Shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward; 31 For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, And out of mount Zion they that escape: The zeal of Jehovah of hosts shall do this. 32 Therefore thus saith Jehovah concerning the king of Assyria: He shall not come into this city, Nor shoot an arrow there, Nor come before it with shield, Nor cast a bank against it. 33 By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, And shall not come into this city, saith Jehovah. 34 And I will defend this city, to save it, For mine own sake, and for my servant David’s sake.

35 And it came to pass that night, that an angel of Jehovah went forth, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred and eighty-five thousand. And when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead bodies. 36 And Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and abode at Nineveh. 37 And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Ararat. And Esarhaddon his son reigned in his stead.

1 Când a auzit împăratul Ezechia*Is. 37:1. lucrul acesta, și-a sfâșiat hainele, s-a acoperit cu un sac și s-a dus în Casa Domnului. 2 A trimis pe Eliachim, căpetenia casei împăratului, pe Șebna, logofătul, și pe preoții cei mai bătrâni, acoperiți cu saci, la prorocul*Luca 3:4. Isaia, fiul lui Amoț. 3 Și i-au zis: „Așa vorbește Ezechia: ‘Ziua aceasta este o zi de necaz, de pedeapsă și de ocară, căci copiii sunt aproape să iasă din pântecele mamei, și nu este putere pentru naștere. 4 Poate*2 Sam. 16:12. că Domnul Dumnezeul tău a auzit toate cuvintele lui Rabșache, pe care l-a trimis împăratul*Cap. 18:35. Asiriei, stăpânul său, să batjocorească pe Dumnezeul cel viu și poate că Domnul Dumnezeul tău îl va pedepsi*Ps. 50:21. pentru cuvintele pe care le-a auzit. Înalță dar o rugăciune pentru ceilalți care au mai rămas.’" 5 Slujitorii împăratului Ezechia s-au dus dar la Isaia. 6 Și Isaia*Is. 37:6. le-a zis: „Iată ce să spuneți stăpânului vostru: ‘Așa vorbește Domnul: «Nu te speria de cuvintele pe care le-ai auzit și prin care M-au batjocorit slujitorii*Cap. 18:17. împăratului Asiriei. 7 Voi pune în el un duh*Vers. 35-37.Ier. 51:1. care îl va face ca, la auzul unei vești pe care o va primi, să se întoarcă în țara lui și-l voi face să cadă ucis de sabie în țara lui.»’" 8 Rabșache, plecând, a găsit pe împăratul Asiriei luptând împotriva Libnei, căci aflase de plecarea lui din*Cap. 18:14. Lachis. 9 Atunci, împăratul Asiriei a primit o veste*1 Sam. 23:27. cu privire la Tirhaca, împăratul Etiopiei. I s-a spus: „Iată că acela a pornit cu război împotriva ta." Și împăratul Asiriei a trimis soli din nou lui Ezechia, zicând: 10 „Așa să vorbiți lui Ezechia, împăratul lui Iuda: ‘Să nu te înșele Dumnezeul tău, în care*Cap. 18:5. te încrezi, zicând: «Ierusalimul nu va fi dat în mâinile împăratului Asiriei.» 11 Iată, ai auzit ce au făcut împărații Asiriei tuturor țărilor și cum le-au nimicit. Și tu să fii izbăvit?! 12 Dumnezeii*Cap. 18:33. neamurilor pe care le-au nimicit părinții mei au izbăvit ei pe Gozan, pe Haran, pe Rețef și pe fiii lui*Ezec. 27:23. Eden din Telasar? 13 Unde*Cap. 18:34. sunt împăratul Hamatului, împăratul Arpadului și împăratul cetăților Sefarvaim, Hena și Iva?’" 14 Ezechia*Is. 37:14. a luat scrisoarea din mâna solilor și a citit-o. Apoi s-a suit la Casa Domnului și a întins-o înaintea Domnului, 15 căruia I-a făcut următoarea rugăciune: „Doamne, Dumnezeul lui Israel, care șezi*1 Sam. 4:4.Ps. 80:1. pe heruvimi! Tu*1 Împ. 18:39.Is. 44:6.Ier. 10:10-12. ești singurul Dumnezeu al tuturor împărățiilor pământului! Tu ai făcut cerurile și pământul. 16 Doamne, pleacă-Ți*Ps. 31:2. urechea și ascultă! Doamne, deschide-Ți*2 Cron. 6:40. ochii și privește! Auzi cuvintele lui Sanherib, care a trimis*Vers. 4. pe Rabșache să batjocorească pe Dumnezeul cel viu! 17 Da, Doamne, este adevărat că împărații Asiriei au nimicit neamurile și le-au pustiit țările 18 și că au aruncat în foc pe dumnezeii lor, dar ei nu erau dumnezei, ci erau lucrări*Ps. 115:4.Ier. 10:3. făcute de mâna omului, erau lemn și piatră, și i-au nimicit. 19 Acum, Doamne, Dumnezeul nostru, izbăvește-ne din mâna lui Sanherib, ca să știe toate împărățiile*Ps. 83:18. pământului că numai Tu ești Dumnezeu, Doamne!" 20 Atunci, Isaia, fiul lui Amoț, a trimis să spună lui Ezechia: „Așa vorbește Domnul Dumnezeul lui Israel: ‘Am auzit*Is. 37:21. rugăciunea*Ps. 65:2. pe care Mi-ai făcut-o cu privire la Sanherib, împăratul Asiriei.’

21 Iată cuvântul pe care l-a rostit Domnul împotriva lui:

‘Fecioara, fiica*Plâng. 2:13. Sionului, te disprețuiește și râde de tine;

fata Ierusalimului dă*Iov 16:4.Ps. 22:7,8.Plâng. 2:15. din cap după tine.

22 Pe cine ai batjocorit și ai ocărât tu? Împotriva cui ai ridicat glasul?

Și împotriva cui ți-ai ridicat ochii?

Împotriva Sfântului*Ps. 71:22.Is. 5:24.Ier. 51:5. lui Israel!

23 Prin solii*Cap. 18:17. tăi ai batjocorit pe Domnul și ai zis:

«Cu*Ps. 20:7. mulțimea carelor mele, am suit

vârful munților, coastele Libanului!

Voi tăia cei mai înalți cedri ai lui, cei mai frumoși chiparoși ai lui

și voi atinge creasta lui cea mai înaltă, pădurea lui care este ca o grădină de poame;

24 am săpat și am băut ape străine

și voi seca cu talpa picioarelor mele toate râurile Egiptului.»

25 N-ai auzit că Eu demult am pregătit aceste lucruri*Is. 45:7. și că le-am hotărât din vremurile vechi? Acum însă am îngăduit să se împlinească

și să prefaci*Is. 10:5. cetăți întărite în mormane de dărâmături.

26 Locuitorii lor sunt neputincioși,

îngroziți și înmărmuriți;

au ajuns ca iarba*Ps. 129:6. de pe câmp și ca verdeața fragedă,

ca iarba de pe acoperișuri și ca grâul care se usucă înainte de a-i da spicul.

27 Dar știu*Ps. 139:1. când stai jos, când ieși și când intri

și când ești furios împotriva Mea.

28 Pentru că ești furios împotriva Mea și pentru că trufia ta a ajuns până la urechile Mele,

de aceea voi pune belciugul*Iov 41:2.Ezec. 29:4;38:4.Amos 4:2. Meu în nările tale

și zăbala Mea, între buzele tale

și te voi face să te întorci pe drumul*Vers. 33,36,37. pe care ai venit.

29 Acesta să-ți fie*1 Sam. 2:34. Cap. 20:8,9.Is. 7:11,14.Luca 2:12. semnul:

Anul acesta veți mânca ce crește de la sine

și al doilea an, ce va răsări din rădăcinile rămase,

dar în al treilea an veți semăna, veți secera,

veți sădi vii și veți mânca din rodul lor.

30 Rămășița*2 Cron. 32:22,23. din casa lui Iuda, ce va mai rămâne,

va prinde iarăși rădăcini dedesubt și deasupra va da rod.

31 Căci din Ierusalim va ieși o rămășiță

și din muntele Sionului, cei scăpați.

Iată ce va face râvna*Is. 9:7. Domnului oștirilor.

32 De aceea, așa vorbește Domnul asupra împăratului Asiriei:

«Nu va intra în cetatea aceasta, nici nu va arunca săgeți în ea,

nu va sta înaintea ei cu scuturi și nu va ridica întărituri de șanțuri împotriva ei.

33 Se va întoarce pe drumul pe care a venit

și nu va intra în cetatea aceasta», zice Domnul.

34 «Căci Eu voi ocroti*Cap. 20:6. cetatea aceasta ca s-o mântuiesc,

din pricina Mea și din pricina robului*1 Împ. 11:12,13. Meu David.»’"

35 În noaptea*2 Cron. 32:21.Is. 37:36. aceea, a ieșit îngerul Domnului și a ucis în tabăra asirienilor o sută optzeci și cinci de mii de oameni. Și, când s-au sculat dimineața, iată că toți erau niște trupuri moarte. 36 Atunci, Sanherib, împăratul Asiriei, și-a ridicat tabăra, a plecat și s-a întors și a locuit la Ninive*Gen. 10:11.. 37 Și, pe când se închina în casa dumnezeului său Nisroc, Adramelec*2 Cron. 32:21. și Șarețer, fiii săi, l-au*Vers. 7. ucis cu sabia și au fugit în țara Ararat. Și în locul lui a domnit fiul său Esar-Hadon*Ezra 4:2..
