1 {Ein Stufenlied.} Von Salomo. Wenn Jehova das Haus nicht baut, vergebens arbeiten daran die Bauleute; wenn Jehova die Stadt nicht bewacht, vergebens wacht der Wächter.2 Vergebens ist es für euch, daß ihr früh aufstehet, spät aufbleibet, das Brot der Mühsal {Eig. das Brot der Mühen, d.h. das sauer erworbene Brot} esset; also gibt er seinem Geliebten im {O. den} Schlaf.3 Siehe, ein Erbteil Jehovas sind Söhne, eine Belohnung die Leibesfrucht;4 Wie Pfeile in der Hand eines Helden, so sind die Söhne der Jugend:5 Glückselig der Mann, der mit ihnen seinen Köcher gefüllt hat! Sie werden nicht beschämt werden, wenn sie mit Feinden reden im Tore.

1 Unless Yahweh builds the house,

they who build it labor in vain.

Unless Yahweh watches over the city,

the watchman guards it in vain.

2 It is vain for you to rise up early,

to stay up late,

eating the bread of toil,

for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

3 Behold, children are a heritage of Yahweh.

The fruit of the womb is his reward.

4 As arrows in the hand of a mighty man,

so are the children of youth.

5 Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them.

They won’t be disappointed when they speak with their enemies in the gate.
