1 These are the words of the covenant which the LORD commanded Moses to make with the children of Israel in the land of Moab, beside the covenant which he made with them in Horeb. 2 And Moses called unto all Israel, and said unto them, Ye have seen all that the LORD did before your eyes in the land of Egypt unto Pharaoh, and unto all his servants, and unto all his land; 3 the great temptations which thine eyes saw, the signs, and those great wonders: 4 but the LORD hath not given you an heart to know, and eyes to see, and ears to hear, unto this day. 5 And I have led you forty years in the wilderness: your clothes are not waxen old upon you, and thy shoe is not waxen old upon thy foot. 6 Ye have not eaten bread, neither have ye drunk wine or strong drink: that ye might know that I am the LORD your God. 7 And when ye came unto this place, Sihon the king of Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, came out against us unto battle, and we smote them: 8 and we took their land, and gave it for an inheritance unto the Reubenites, and to the Gadites, and to the half tribe of the Manassites. 9 Keep therefore the words of this covenant, and do them, that ye may prosper in all that ye do. 10 Ye stand this day all of you before the LORD your God; your heads, your tribes, your elders, and your officers, even all the men of Israel, 11 your little ones, your wives, and thy stranger that is in the midst of thy camps, from the hewer of thy wood unto the drawer of thy water: 12 that thou shouldest enter into the covenant of the LORD thy God, and into his oath, which the LORD thy God maketh with thee this day: 13 that he may establish thee this day unto himself for a people, and that he may be unto thee a God, as he spake unto thee, and as he sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. 14 Neither with you only do I make this covenant and this oath; 15 but with him that standeth here with us this day before the LORD our God, and also with him that is not here with us this day: 16 (for ye know how we dwelt in the land of Egypt; and how we came through the midst of the nations through which ye passed; 17 and ye have seen their abominations, and their idols, wood and stone, silver and gold, which were among them:) 18 lest there should be among you man, or woman, or family, or tribe, whose heart turneth away this day from the LORD our God, to go to serve the gods of those nations; lest there should be among you a root that beareth gall and wormwood; 19 and it come to pass, when he heareth the words of this curse, that he bless himself in his heart, saying, I shall have peace, though I walk in the stubbornness of mine heart, to destroy the moist with the dry: 20 the LORD will not pardon him, but then the anger of the LORD and his jealousy shall smoke against that man, and all the curse that is written in this book shall lie upon him, and the LORD shall blot out his name from under heaven. 21 And the LORD shall separate him unto evil out of all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant that is written in this book of the law. 22 And the generation to come, your children that shall rise up after you, and the foreigner that shall come from a far land, shall say, when they see the plagues of that land, and the sicknesses wherewith the LORD hath made it sick; 23 and that the whole land thereof is brimstone, and salt, and a burning, that it is not sown, nor beareth, nor any grass groweth therein, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the LORD overthrew in his anger, and in his wrath: 24 even all the nations shall say, Wherefore hath the LORD done thus unto this land? what meaneth the heat of this great anger? 25 Then men shall say, Because they forsook the covenant of the LORD, the God of their fathers, which he made with them when he brought them forth out of the land of Egypt; 26 and went and served other gods, and worshipped them, gods whom they knew not, and whom he had not given unto them: 27 therefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against this land, to bring upon it all the curse that is written in this book: 28 and the LORD rooted them out of their land in anger, and in wrath, and in great indignation, and cast them into another land, as at this day. 29 The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but the things that are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.

1 São estas as palavras da aliança que o Senhor ordenou que Moisés fizesse com os filhos de Israel na terra de Moabe, além da aliança que havia feito com eles em Horebe. 2 Moisés mandou reunir todo o Israel. Então lhes disse:

— Vocês viram com os seus próprios olhos tudo o que o Senhor fez na terra do Egito com Faraó, com todos os seus servos, e com toda a sua terra. 3 Viram grandes provas, sinais e grandes maravilhas. 4 Mas até o dia de hoje o Senhor não deu a vocês um coração para entender, nem olhos para ver, nem ouvidos para ouvir. 5 Durante quarenta anos eu os conduzi pelo deserto e, nesse tempo, não envelheceram as roupas que vocês usavam, nem se gastaram as sandálias que vocês calçavam. 6 Vocês não comeram pão, nem beberam vinho ou bebida forte, para que soubessem que eu sou o Senhor, seu Deus. 7 Quando chegaram a este lugar, Seom, rei de Hesbom, e Ogue, rei de Basã, saíram ao nosso encontro para lutar contra nós, e nós os derrotamos. 8 Tomamos a terra deles e a demos por herança aos rubenitas, aos gaditas e à meia tribo dos manassitas. 9 Portanto, guardem e cumpram as palavras desta aliança, para que vocês prosperem em tudo o que fizerem.

10 — Hoje todos vocês estão diante do Senhor, seu Deus: os chefes das tribos, os anciãos e os oficiais, todos os homens de Israel, 11 as crianças, as mulheres e os estrangeiros que se encontram no arraial, desde o rachador de lenha até o tirador de água, 12 para que entrem na aliança do Senhor, seu Deus, e no juramento que hoje o Senhor, seu Deus, está fazendo com vocês, 13 para que hoje os estabeleça por seu povo, e ele seja o Deus de vocês, como ele lhes prometeu e como jurou aos pais de vocês, Abraão, Isaque e Jacó. 14 Não é somente com vocês que faço esta aliança e este juramento, 15 porém com aquele que, hoje, aqui, está conosco diante do Senhor, nosso Deus, e também com aquele que não está aqui, hoje, conosco.

16 — Porque vocês sabem como habitamos na terra do Egito e como passamos pelo meio das nações pelas quais vocês passaram. 17 Viram as suas abominações e os seus ídolos, feitos de madeira e de pedra, e viram também a prata e o ouro que havia entre elas. 18 Que entre vocês não haja homem, nem mulher, nem família, nem tribo cujo coração hoje se desvie do Senhor, nosso Deus, e vá servir os deuses destas nações. Que não haja entre vocês raiz que produza erva venenosa e amarga, 19 ninguém que, ouvindo as palavras desta maldição, se abençoe no seu íntimo, dizendo: "Terei paz, mesmo que eu ande na teimosia do meu coração", pois isso destruiria a terra molhada com a seca. 20 O Senhor não estará disposto a perdoá-lo; pelo contrário, a ira do Senhor e o seu zelo se acenderão sobre tal homem, e toda maldição escrita neste livro cairá sobre ele; e o Senhor apagará o nome desse homem da face da terra. 21 O Senhor o separará de todas as tribos de Israel para calamidade, segundo todas as maldições da aliança escrita neste Livro da Lei.

22 — Então a geração vindoura, os filhos que vierem depois de vocês e os estrangeiros que virão de terras remotas verão as pragas desta terra e as suas doenças, com que o Senhor a terá afligido; 23 verão toda a terra abrasada com enxofre e sal, de modo que não será semeada, nada produzirá, nem crescerá nela erva alguma, assim como foi a destruição de Sodoma e de Gomorra, de Admá e de Zeboim, que o Senhor destruiu na sua ira e no seu furor; 24 sim, todas as nações verão isso e perguntarão: "Por que o Senhor fez isso com esta terra? Qual foi a causa do furor de tamanha ira?" 25 Então se dirá: "Porque abandonaram a aliança que o Senhor, Deus de seus pais, fez com eles, quando os tirou do Egito. 26 Eles foram e serviram outros deuses, e os adoraram; deuses que não conheceram e que ele não lhes havia designado. 27 Por isso a ira do Senhor se acendeu contra esta terra, trazendo sobre ela toda a maldição que está escrita neste livro. 28 Com ira, indignação e grande furor, o Senhor os arrancou de sua terra e os lançou para outra terra, como hoje se vê."

29 — As coisas encobertas pertencem ao Senhor, nosso Deus, porém as reveladas nos pertencem, a nós e aos nossos filhos, para sempre, para que cumpramos todas as palavras desta lei.
