1 Hear, O Israel: thou art to pass over Jordan this day, to go in to possess nations greater and mightier than thyself, cities great and fenced up to heaven, 2 a people great and tall, the sons of the Anakim, whom thou knowest, and of whom thou hast heard say, Who can stand before the sons of Anak? 3 Know therefore this day, that the LORD thy God is he which goeth over before thee as a devouring fire; he shall destroy them, and he shall bring them down before thee: so shalt thou drive them out, and make them to perish quickly, as the LORD hath spoken unto thee. 4 Speak not thou in thine heart, after that the LORD thy God hath thrust them out from before thee, saying, For my righteousness the LORD hath brought me in to possess this land: whereas for the wickedness of these nations the LORD doth drive them out from before thee. 5 Not for thy righteousness, or for the uprightness of thine heart, dost thou go in to possess their land: but for the wickedness of these nations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee, and that he may establish the word which the LORD sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. 6 Know therefore, that the LORD thy God giveth thee not this good land to possess it for thy righteousness; for thou art a stiffnecked people. 7 Remember, forget thou not, how thou provokedst the LORD thy God to wrath in the wilderness: from the day that thou wentest forth out of the land of Egypt, until ye came unto this place, ye have been rebellious against the LORD. 8 Also in Horeb ye provoked the LORD to wrath, and the LORD was angry with you to have destroyed you. 9 When I was gone up into the mount to receive the tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant which the LORD made with you, then I abode in the mount forty days and forty nights; I did neither eat bread nor drink water. 10 And the LORD delivered unto me the two tables of stone written with the finger of God; and on them was written according to all the words, which the LORD spake with you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly. 11 And it came to pass at the end of forty days and forty nights, that the LORD gave me the two tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant. 12 And the LORD said unto me, Arise, get thee down quickly from hence; for thy people which thou hast brought forth out of Egypt have corrupted themselves; they are quickly turned aside out of the way which I commanded them; they have made them a molten image. 13 Furthermore the LORD spake unto me, saying, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people: 14 let me alone, that I may destroy them, and blot out their name from under heaven: and I will make of thee a nation mightier and greater than they. 15 So I turned and came down from the mount, and the mount burned with fire: and the two tables of the covenant were in my two hands. 16 And I looked, and, behold, ye had sinned against the LORD your God; ye had made you a molten calf: ye had turned aside quickly out of the way which the LORD had commanded you. 17 And I took hold of the two tables, and cast them out of my two hands, and brake them before your eyes. 18 And I fell down before the LORD, as at the first, forty days and forty nights; I did neither eat bread nor drink water; because of all your sin which ye sinned, in doing that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger. 19 For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure, wherewith the LORD was wroth against you to destroy you. But the LORD hearkened unto me that time also. 20 And the LORD was very angry with Aaron to have destroyed him: and I prayed for Aaron also the same time. 21 And I took your sin, the calf which ye had made, and burnt it with fire, and stamped it, grinding it very small, until it was as fine as dust: and I cast the dust thereof into the brook that descended out of the mount. 22 And at Taberah, and at Massah, and at Kibroth-hattaavah, ye provoked the LORD to wrath. 23 And when the LORD sent you from Kadesh-barnea, saying, Go up and possess the land which I have given you; then ye rebelled against the commandment of the LORD your God, and ye believed him not, nor hearkened to his voice. 24 Ye have been rebellious against the LORD from the day that I knew you. 25 So I fell down before the LORD the forty days and forty nights that I fell down; because the LORD had said he would destroy you. 26 And I prayed unto the LORD, and said, O Lord GOD, destroy not thy people and thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemed through thy greatness, which thou hast brought forth out of Egypt with a mighty hand. 27 Remember thy servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; look not unto the stubbornness of this people, nor to their wickedness, nor to their sin: 28 lest the land whence thou broughtest us out say, Because the LORD was not able to bring them into the land which he promised unto them, and because he hated them, he hath brought them out to slay them in the wilderness. 29 Yet they are thy people and thine inheritance, which thou broughtest out by thy great power and by thy stretched out arm.

1 — Escute, Israel! Hoje vocês vão passar o Jordão para tomar posse de nações maiores e mais fortes do que vocês, cidades grandes e com muralhas que chegam até os céus, 2 um povo grande e alto, filhos dos anaquins, que vocês conhecem e de quem vocês já ouviram dizer: "Quem poderá resistir aos filhos de Anaque?" 3 Saibam, pois, hoje que o Senhor, seu Deus, é que vai adiante de vocês. Ele é fogo que consome; ele os destruirá e os subjugará diante de vocês. Assim, vocês os expulsarão e, depressa, os farão desaparecer, como o Senhor prometeu a vocês.

4 — Quando, pois, o Senhor, seu Deus, tiver expulsado essas nações de diante de vocês, não fiquem pensando: "É por causa da nossa justiça que o Senhor nos trouxe a esta terra para que tomemos posse dela." Pelo contrário, é por causa da maldade dessas nações que o Senhor irá expulsá-las de diante de vocês. 5 Não é por causa da justiça de vocês, nem por causa da retidão do seu coração que vocês entrarão para possuir a terra dessas nações, mas o Senhor, o seu Deus, as expulsará de diante de vocês por causa da maldade delas e também para confirmar a palavra que o Senhor, o seu Deus, jurou aos seus pais, Abraão, Isaque e Jacó.

6 — Saibam, pois, que não é por causa da justiça de vocês que o Senhor, seu Deus, lhes dá esta boa terra para que tomem posse dela, pois vocês são um povo teimoso. 7 Lembrem-se e não se esqueçam de como no deserto vocês provocaram o Senhor à ira. Desde o dia em que saíram do Egito até que chegaram a este lugar, vocês foram rebeldes contra o Senhor. 8 Em Horebe, vocês tanto provocaram o Senhor à ira, que o Senhor ficou irado com vocês, ao ponto de querer destruí-los. 9 Quando eu subi o monte para receber as tábuas de pedra, as tábuas da aliança que o Senhor havia feito com vocês, fiquei no monte quarenta dias e quarenta noites; não comi pão, nem bebi água. 10 O Senhor me deu as duas tábuas de pedra, escritas com o dedo de Deus. Nelas estavam todas as palavras que o Senhor havia falado com vocês no monte, do meio do fogo, quando todo o povo estava reunido. 11 No fim dos quarenta dias e quarenta noites, o Senhor me deu as duas tábuas de pedra, as tábuas da aliança. 12 E o Senhor me disse: "Levante-se, desça depressa, porque o seu povo, que você tirou do Egito, já se corrompeu. Bem depressa se desviaram do caminho que lhes ordenei; fizeram uma imagem fundida para si."

13 — E o Senhor continuou, dizendo: "Tenho observado este povo, e eis que ele é povo teimoso. 14 Deixe que eu os destrua e apague o nome deles da face da terra; e farei de você uma nação mais forte e mais numerosa do que esta."

15 — Então me virei e desci do monte, que estava em chamas. As duas tábuas da aliança estavam em minhas mãos. 16 Olhei, e eis que vocês haviam pecado contra o Senhor, seu Deus: tinham feito para si um bezerro de metal fundido. Bem depressa vocês se desviaram do caminho que o Senhor lhes havia ordenado. 17 Então peguei as duas tábuas e as joguei no chão, quebrando-as diante dos olhos de vocês. 18 Depois, como havia feito na ocasião anterior, fiquei prostrado diante do Senhor durante quarenta dias e quarenta noites. Não comi pão e não bebi água, por causa de todo o pecado que vocês haviam cometido, fazendo o que é mau aos olhos do Senhor, para o provocar à ira. 19 Porque eu estava com medo por causa da ira e do furor com que o Senhor tanto estava irado contra vocês, ao ponto de querer destruí-los. Porém mais uma vez o Senhor me ouviu. 20 O Senhor estava muito irado com Arão e queria destruí-lo; mas também orei por Arão ao mesmo tempo. 21 Depois peguei o pecado de vocês, aquele bezerro que vocês tinham feito, o queimei e o esmaguei, moendo-o bem, até que se desfez em pó; e o pó eu joguei no ribeiro que descia do monte.

22 — Também em Taberá, em Massá e em Quibrote-Hataavá vocês provocaram muito a ira do Senhor. 23 Também quando o Senhor os enviou de Cades-Barneia, dizendo: "Vão e tomem posse da terra que lhes dei", vocês se rebelaram contra o mandado do Senhor, seu Deus, e não creram nem obedeceram à sua voz. 24 Vocês têm sido rebeldes contra o Senhor, desde o dia em que os conheci.

25 — Assim, fiquei prostrado diante do Senhor. Durante quarenta dias e quarenta noites, estive prostrado, porque o Senhor tinha dito que queria destruir vocês. 26 Orei ao Senhor, dizendo: "Ó Senhor Deus! Não destruas o teu povo e a tua herança, que resgataste com a tua grandeza, que tiraste do Egito com mão poderosa. 27 Lembra-te dos teus servos Abraão, Isaque e Jacó. Não atentes para a dureza deste povo, nem para a sua maldade, nem para o seu pecado, 28 para que o povo da terra da qual nos tiraste não diga: ‘O Senhor não conseguiu levá-los para a terra que lhes havia prometido. E, por odiá-los, tirou-os daqui para matá-los no deserto.’ 29 Mas eles são o teu povo e a tua herança, que tiraste com o teu grande poder e com o braço estendido."
