1 They say, If a man put away his wife, and she go from him, and become another man’s, shall he return unto her again? shall not that land be greatly polluted? But thou hast played the harlot with many lovers; yet return again to me, saith the LORD. 2 Lift up thine eyes unto the bare heights, and see; where hast thou not been lain with? By the ways hast thou sat for them, as an Arabian in the wilderness; and thou hast polluted the land with thy whoredoms and with thy wickedness. 3 Therefore the showers have been withholden, and there hath been no latter rain; yet thou hadst a whore’s forehead, thou refusedst to be ashamed. 4 Wilt thou not from this time cry unto me, My father, thou art the guide of my youth? 5 Will he retain his anger for ever? will he keep it to the end? Behold, thou hast spoken and hast done evil things, and hast had thy way. 6 Moreover the LORD said unto me in the days of Josiah the king, Hast thou seen that which backsliding Israel hath done? she is gone up upon every high mountain and under every green tree, and there hath played the harlot. 7 And I said after she had done all these things, She will return unto me; but she returned not: and her treacherous sister Judah saw it. 8 And I saw, when, for this very cause that backsliding Israel had committed adultery, I had put her away and given her a bill of divorcement, yet treacherous Judah her sister feared not; but she also went and played the harlot. 9 And it came to pass through the lightness of her whoredom, that the land was polluted, and she committed adultery with stones and with stocks. 10 And yet for all this her treacherous sister Judah hath not returned unto me with her whole heart, but feignedly, saith the LORD. 11 And the LORD said unto me, Backsliding Israel hath shewn herself more righteous than treacherous Judah. 12 Go, and proclaim these words toward the north, and say, Return, thou backsliding Israel, saith the LORD; I will not look in anger upon you: for I am merciful, saith the LORD, I will not keep anger for ever. 13 Only acknowledge thine iniquity, that thou hast transgressed against the LORD thy God, and hast scattered thy ways to the strangers under every green tree, and ye have not obeyed my voice, saith the LORD. 14 Return, O backsliding children, saith the LORD; for I am a husband unto you: and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion: 15 and I will give you shepherds according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding. 16 And it shall come to pass, when ye be multiplied and increased in the land, in those days, saith the LORD, they shall say no more, The ark of the covenant of the LORD; neither shall it come to mind: neither shall they remember it; neither shall they visit it; neither shall that be done any more. 17 At that time they shall call Jerusalem the throne of the LORD; and all the nations shall be gathered unto it, to the name of the LORD, to Jerusalem: neither shall they walk any more after the stubbornness of their evil heart. 18 In those days the house of Judah shall walk with the house of Israel, and they shall come together out of the land of the north to the land that I gave for an inheritance unto your fathers. 19 But I said, How shall I put thee among the children, and give thee a pleasant land, a goodly heritage of the hosts of the nations? and I said, Ye shall call me My father; and shall not turn away from following me. 20 Surely as a wife treacherously departeth from her husband, so have ye dealt treacherously with me, O house of Israel, saith the LORD. 21 A voice is heard upon the bare heights, the weeping and the supplications of the children of Israel; for that they have perverted their way, they have forgotten the LORD their God. 22 Return, ye backsliding children, I will heal your backslidings, Behold, we are come unto thee; for thou art the LORD our God. 23 Truly in vain is the help that is looked for from the hills, the tumult on the mountains: truly in the LORD our God is the salvation of Israel. 24 But the shameful thing hath devoured the labour of our fathers from our youth; their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters. 25 Let us lie down in our shame, and let our confusion cover us: for we have sinned against the LORD our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even unto this day: and we have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God.

1 "Se um homem repudiar

a sua mulher,

e ela o deixar e se tornar esposa

de outro homem,

será que o primeiro marido

poderá voltar para ela?

Não seria aquela terra

totalmente contaminada

por causa disso?

Ora, você se prostituiu

com muitos amantes

e ainda assim

quer voltar para mim!" —

diz o Senhor.

2 "Levante os olhos

aos lugares altos e veja:

onde você não se prostituiu?

Na beira dos caminhos

você se assentava à espera deles

como o árabe

se assenta no deserto.

E assim você contaminou a terra

com a sua prostituição

e com a sua maldade.

3 É por isso que não tem chovido,

e a chuva fora de época não veio.

Mas você tem

a fronte de prostituta

e não quer se envergonhar.

4 Não é fato que agora mesmo

você me invoca,

dizendo: ‘Meu pai, tu és meu amigo

desde a minha mocidade.

5 Conservarás para sempre

a tua ira?

Ou a reterás até o fim?’

Sim, isso é o que você diz,

mas comete maldade

até não poder mais."

6 Nos dias do rei Josias, o Senhor me disse:

— Você viu o que fez a rebelde Israel? Foi a todos os montes altos e ficou debaixo de todas as árvores frondosas para entregar-se à prostituição. 7 E, depois de ela ter feito tudo isso, eu pensei que ela voltaria para mim, mas não voltou. E a sua traiçoeira irmã Judá viu isso. 8 Quando, por causa de tudo isso, por ter ela cometido adultério, eu despedi a rebelde Israel e lhe dei carta de divórcio, vi que a irmã dela, a traiçoeira Judá, não ficou com medo, mas também ela foi e se entregou à prostituição. 9 E aconteceu que, pela facilidade com que se entregou à prostituição, ela contaminou a terra; porque adulterou, adorando pedras e árvores. 10 Apesar de tudo isso, a irmã dela, a traiçoeira Judá, não voltou para mim de todo o coração, mas fingidamente, diz o Senhor.

11 O Senhor me disse:

— A rebelde Israel se mostrou mais justa do que a traiçoeira Judá. 12 Vá, pois, e proclame estas palavras para o lado do Norte, dizendo:

"Volte, ó rebelde Israel",

diz o Senhor,

"e não farei cair a minha ira

sobre você,

porque eu sou compassivo",

diz o Senhor,

"e não manterei para sempre

a minha ira.

13 Tão somente reconheça

a sua iniquidade,

reconheça que você transgrediu

contra o Senhor, seu Deus,

e que você se prostituiu

com os estranhos

debaixo de todas as árvores

frondosas

e não deu ouvidos à minha voz",

diz o Senhor.

14 "Voltem para mim,

ó filhos rebeldes",

diz o Senhor.

"Porque eu é que sou

o esposo de vocês.

Eu os tomarei, um de cada cidade

e dois de cada família,

e os levarei a Sião."

15 — Darei a vocês pastores segundo o meu coração, que os apascentem com conhecimento e com inteligência. 16 E, quando vocês se multiplicarem e se tornarem fecundos na terra, então, diz o Senhor, nunca mais se exclamará: "A arca da aliança do Senhor!" Ela não lhes virá à mente, não se lembrarão dela nem dela sentirão falta; e não se fará outra. 17 Naquele tempo, chamarão Jerusalém de "Trono do Senhor". Nela se reunirão todas as nações em nome do Senhor e já não andarão segundo a dureza do seu coração maligno. 18 Naqueles dias, a casa de Judá andará com a casa de Israel, e elas virão juntas da terra do Norte para a terra que dei em herança aos pais de vocês.

19 "Eu disse a mim mesmo:

Como eu gostaria de colocá-la

entre os filhos

e dar-lhe a terra desejável,

a mais bela herança das nações!

Pensei que você

me chamaria de ‘pai’

e não se desviaria de mim.

20 Mas, assim como a mulher que,

com traição, se afasta

do seu marido,

assim você foi infiel para comigo,

ó casa de Israel",

diz o Senhor.

21 "Nos lugares altos,

se ouve uma voz:

o pranto e as súplicas

dos filhos de Israel.

Porque eles perverteram

o seu caminho

e se esqueceram do Senhor,

seu Deus.

22 Voltem, filhos rebeldes!

Eu curarei as suas rebeliões."

O povo responde:

"Eis-nos aqui! Vimos ter contigo,

porque tu és o Senhor, nosso Deus.

23 Na verdade, não passa de ilusão

o que vem das colinas,

o barulho que vem das montanhas.

Na verdade, a salvação de Israel

está no Senhor, nosso Deus."

24 Mas, desde a nossa juventude, a coisa vergonhosa devorou o trabalho de nossos pais: as suas ovelhas e o seu gado, os seus filhos e as suas filhas. 25 Devíamos nos prostrar em nossa vergonha, e deixar que a nossa desonra nos cubra, porque temos pecado contra o Senhor, nosso Deus, nós e nossos pais, desde a nossa mocidade até o dia de hoje; e não demos ouvidos à voz do Senhor, nosso Deus.
