1 Then all the captains of the forces, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and Jezaniah the son of Hoshaiah, and all the people from the least even unto the greatest, came near, 2 and said unto Jeremiah the prophet, Let, we pray thee, our supplication be accepted before thee, and pray for us unto the LORD thy God, even for all this remnant; for we are left but a few of many, as thine eyes do behold us: 3 that the LORD thy God may shew us the way wherein we should walk, and the thing that we should do. 4 Then Jeremiah the prophet said unto them, I have heard you; behold, I will pray unto the LORD your God according to your words; and it shall come to pass that whatsoever thing the LORD shall answer you, I will declare it unto you; I will keep nothing back from you. 5 Then they said to Jeremiah, The LORD be a true and faithful witness amongst us, if we do not even according to all the word wherewith the LORD thy God shall send thee to us. 6 Whether it be good, or whether it be evil, we will obey the voice of the LORD our God, to whom we send thee; that it may be well with us, when we obey the voice of the LORD our God. 7 And it came to pass after ten days, that the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah. 8 Then called he Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces which were with him, and all the people from the least even to the greatest, 9 and said unto them, Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel, unto whom ye sent me to present your supplication before him: 10 If ye will still abide in this land, then will I build you, and not pull you down, and I will plant you, and not pluck you up: for I repent me of the evil that I have done unto you. 11 Be not afraid of the king of Babylon, of whom ye are afraid; be not afraid of him, saith the LORD: for I am with you to save you, and to deliver you from his hand. 12 And I will grant you mercy, that he may have mercy upon you, and cause you to return to your own land. 13 But if ye say, We will not dwell in this land; so that ye obey not the voice of the LORD your God; 14 saying, No; but we will go into the land of Egypt, where we shall see no war, nor hear the sound of the trumpet, nor have hunger of bread; and there will we dwell: 15 now therefore hear ye the word of the LORD, O remnant of Judah: thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, If ye wholly set your faces to enter into Egypt, and go to sojourn there; 16 then it shall come to pass, that the sword, which ye feel shall overtake you there in the land of Egypt, and the famine, whereof ye are afraid, shall follow hard after you there in Egypt; and there ye shall die. 17 So shall it be with all the men that set their faces to go into Egypt to sojourn there; they shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence: and none of them shall remain or escape from the evil that I will bring upon them. 18 For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; As mine anger and my fury hath been poured forth upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so shall my fury be poured forth upon you, when ye shall enter into Egypt: and ye shall be an execration, and an astonishment, and a curse, and a reproach; and ye shall see this place no more. 19 The LORD hath spoken concerning you, O remnant of Judah, Go ye not into Egypt: know certainly that I have testified unto you this day. 20 For ye have dealt deceitfully against your own souls; for ye sent me unto the LORD your God, saying, Pray for us unto the LORD our God; and according unto all that the LORD our God shall say, so declare unto us, and we will do it: 21 and I have this day declared it to you; but ye have not obeyed the voice of the LORD your God in any thing for the which he hath sent me unto you. 22 Now therefore know certainly that ye shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence, in the place whither ye desire to go to sojourn there.

1 Então todos os capitães dos exércitos e Joanã, filho de Careá, e Jezanias, filho de Hosaías, e todo o povo, desde o menor até o maior, se aproximaram 2 e disseram ao profeta Jeremias:

— Apresentamos a você a nossa humilde súplica, para que você ore ao Senhor, seu Deus, por nós e por este remanescente. Porque, de muitos que éramos, só restamos uns poucos, como você pode ver com os seus próprios olhos. 3 Ore, pedindo que o Senhor, seu Deus, nos mostre o caminho que devemos seguir e o que devemos fazer.

4 O profeta Jeremias respondeu:

— Eu ouvi o pedido de vocês. Vou orar ao Senhor, o Deus de vocês, de acordo com o que vocês pediram. Tudo o que o Senhor lhes disser em resposta, eu o declararei a vocês, sem ocultar nada.

5 Então eles disseram a Jeremias:

— Que o Senhor seja uma testemunha verdadeira e fiel contra nós, se não fizermos conforme toda a palavra que o Senhor, seu Deus, nos disser por meio de você! 6 Seja ela boa ou má, obedeceremos à voz do Senhor, nosso Deus, a quem pedimos que você ore por nós, para que tudo corra bem conosco, ao obedecermos à voz do Senhor, nosso Deus.

7 Depois de dez dias, a palavra do Senhor veio a Jeremias. 8 Então ele chamou Joanã, filho de Careá, todos os capitães dos exércitos que estavam com ele e todo o povo, desde o menor até o maior, 9 e lhes disse:

— Assim diz o Senhor, Deus de Israel, a quem vocês me enviaram para apresentar a súplica de vocês: 10 "Se vocês permanecerem nesta terra, então eu os edificarei e não os derrubarei; eu os plantarei e não os arrancarei, porque estou triste pelo mal que lhes fiz. 11 Não tenham medo do rei da Babilônia, de quem agora vocês estão com medo. Não tenham medo dele, diz o Senhor, porque eu estou com vocês, para os salvar e livrar das mãos dele. 12 Terei misericórdia de vocês, para que ele tenha misericórdia de vocês e os faça voltar a esta terra."

13 — Mas, se vocês disserem: "Não ficaremos nesta terra"; se desobedecerem à voz do Senhor, seu Deus, 14 e disserem: "Não! Preferimos ir à terra do Egito, onde não veremos guerra, nem ouviremos som de trombeta, nem passaremos fome, e ali vamos morar", 15 nesse caso, ouça a palavra do Senhor, ó remanescente de Judá. Assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos, o Deus de Israel: "Se tiverem o firme propósito de entrar no Egito para morar, 16 então a guerra da qual vocês têm medo os alcançará, e a fome que vocês receiam irá no encalço de vocês até o Egito, onde vocês morrerão. 17 Assim será com todos os que tiverem o propósito de entrar no Egito para morar: morrerão à espada, de fome e de peste. Não haverá um só que sobreviva ou escape do mal que trarei sobre eles."

18 — Porque assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos, o Deus de Israel: "Assim como se derramou a minha ira e o meu furor sobre os moradores de Jerusalém, o meu furor se derramará sobre vocês, quando entrarem no Egito. Vocês serão objeto de maldição, de horror, de zombaria e de deboche, e nunca mais verão este lugar."

19 — O Senhor disse a vocês, que são o remanescente de Judá: "Não vão para o Egito." Estejam certos de que hoje eu faço esta advertência: 20 Vocês estão se enganando, à custa da própria vida. Porque me enviaram ao Senhor, seu Deus, dizendo: "Ore por nós ao Senhor, nosso Deus. Depois, conte-nos tudo o que o Senhor, nosso Deus, disser, e nós o faremos." 21 Mas, agora que eu lhes contei tudo isso, vocês não deram ouvidos à voz do Senhor, seu Deus, não fazendo nada do que ele me mandou dizer. 22 Agora, pois, estejam certos de que morrerão à espada, de fome e de peste no mesmo lugar aonde desejaram ir para morar.
