1 Run ye to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem, and see now, and know, and seek in the broad places thereof, if ye can find a man, if there be any that doeth justly, that seeketh truth; and I will pardon her. 2 And though they say, As the LORD liveth; surely they swear falsely. 3 O LORD, do not thine eyes look upon truth? thou hast stricken them, but they were not grieved; thou hast consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction: they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return. 4 Then I said, Surely these are poor: they are foolish; for they know not the way of the LORD, nor the judgment of their God: 5 I will get me unto the great men, and will speak unto them; for they know the way of the LORD, and the judgment of their God. But these with one accord have broken the yoke, and burst the bands. 6 Wherefore a lion out of the forest shall slay them, a wolf of the evenings shall spoil them, a leopard shall watch over their cities, every one that goeth out thence shall be torn in pieces: because their transgressions are many, and their backslidings are increased. 7 How can I pardon thee? thy children have forsaken me, and sworn by them that are no gods: when I had fed them to the full, they committed adultery, and assembled themselves in troops at the harlots’ houses. 8 They were as fed horses in the morning: every one neighed after his neighbour’s wife. 9 shall I not visit for these things? saith the LORD: and shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this? 10 Go ye up upon her walls, and destroy; but make not a full end: take away her branches: for they are not the LORD’S. 11 For the house of Israel and the house of Judah have dealt very treacherously against me, saith the LORD. 12 They have denied the LORD, and said, It is not he; neither shall evil come upon us; neither shall we see sword nor famine: 13 and the prophets shall become wind, and the word is not in them: thus shall it be done unto them. 14 Wherefore thus saith the LORD, the God of hosts, Because ye speak this word, behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall devour them. 15 Lo, I will bring a nation upon you from far, O house of Israel, saith the LORD: it is a mighty nation, it is an ancient nation, a nation whose language thou knowest not, neither understandest what they say. 16 Their quiver is an open sepulchre, they are all mighty men. 17 And they shall eat up thine harvest and thy bread, which thy sons and thy daughters should eat: they shall eat up thy flocks and thine herds: they shall eat up thy vines and thy fig trees: they shall beat down thy fenced cities, wherein thou trustest, with the sword. 18 But even in those days, saith the LORD, I will not make a full end with you. 19 And it shall come to pass, when ye shall say, Wherefore hath the LORD our God done all these things unto us? then shalt thou say unto them, Like as ye have forsaken me, and served strange gods in your land, so shall ye serve strangers in a land that is not yours. 20 Declare ye this in the house of Jacob, and publish it in Judah, saying, 21 Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not: 22 Fear ye not me? saith the LORD: will ye not tremble at my presence, which have placed the sand for the bound of the sea, by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it? and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it. 23 But this people hath a revolting and a rebellious heart; they are revolted and gone. 24 Neither say they in their heart, Let us now fear the LORD our God, that giveth rain, both the former and the latter, in its season; that reserveth unto us the appointed weeks of the harvest. 25 Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withholden good from you. 26 For among my people are found wicked men: they watch, as fowlers lie in wait; they set a trap, they catch men. 27 As a cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit: therefore they are become great, and waxen rich. 28 They are waxen fat, they shine: yea, they overpass in deeds of wickedness: they plead not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, that they should prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge. 29 shall I not visit for these things? saith the LORD: shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this? 30 A wonderful and horrible thing is come to pass in the land; 31 the prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?

1 Deem uma volta

pelas ruas de Jerusalém,

olhem, investiguem,

procurem nas suas praças

para ver se acham alguém,

se há uma pessoa

que pratique a justiça

ou busque a verdade.

Se acharem, eu perdoarei a cidade.

2 Embora digam: "Tão certo

como vive o Senhor",

certamente juram falso.

3 Senhor, por acaso os teus olhos

não atentam para a fidelidade?

Tu feriste esse povo,

mas eles não sentiram nada;

tu os consumiste,

mas eles não quiseram

aceitar a disciplina;

endureceram o rosto

mais do que uma rocha;

não quiseram voltar.

4 Mas eu pensei:

"São apenas pobres insensatos,

pois não conhecem

o caminho do Senhor,

o direito do seu Deus.

5 Irei aos poderosos

e falarei com eles,

porque eles sabem

o caminho do Senhor,

o direito do seu Deus."

Mas todos eles quebraram o jugo

e romperam as algemas.

6 Por isso, um leão do bosque

os matará,

um lobo dos desertos

os despedaçará,

um leopardo estará à espreita

das suas cidades.

Quem sair das cidades

será devorado;

porque as transgressões deles

são muitas,

e as suas rebeldias

se multiplicaram.

7 "Jerusalém, como posso

perdoá-la?

Os seus filhos me abandonaram

e juram pelos que não são deuses.

Depois de eu ter-lhes

saciado a fome,

adulteraram e se reuniram

em casas de prostitutas.

8 Como garanhões bem fartos

e cheios de desejo,

cada um fica rinchando

para a mulher do seu próximo.

9 Deixaria eu de castigar

estas coisas?" —

diz o Senhor.

"Não deveria eu me vingar

de uma nação como esta?"

10 "Que os inimigos passem

pelas carreiras da vinha

e a destruam,

porém não por completo;

tirem os ramos,

porque não são do Senhor.

11 Porque a casa de Israel

e a casa de Judá

foram totalmente infiéis a mim",

diz o Senhor.

12 Negaram o Senhor e disseram:

"Não é ele. Nenhum mal

nos sobrevirá;

não veremos a guerra

nem passaremos fome."

13 Os profetas não passam de vento,

porque a palavra

não está com eles;

as suas ameaças se cumprirão

contra eles mesmos.

14 Portanto, o Senhor,

o Deus dos Exércitos, me disse:

"Visto que eles proferiram

tais palavras,

eis que transformarei em fogo

as minhas palavras na sua boca

e farei deste povo a lenha;

e o fogo os consumirá.

15 Eis que trago contra você

uma nação de longe,

ó casa de Israel",

diz o Senhor;

"nação robusta, nação antiga,

nação cuja língua

você não conhece;

e cuja fala você não entende.

16 A aljava deles

é como uma sepultura aberta;

todos os seus homens são valentes.

17 Devorarão as colheitas

e o pão de vocês,

devorarão os seus filhos

e as suas filhas;

comerão as suas ovelhas

e o seu gado;

comerão os frutos das suas videiras

e figueiras;

e com a espada derrubarão

as cidades fortificadas

em que vocês confiam."

18 — Porém, mesmo naqueles dias, diz o Senhor, não os destruirei completamente. 19 Quando perguntarem: "Por que o Senhor, nosso Deus, nos fez todas essas coisas?", você lhes responderá: "Vocês me abandonaram e serviram a deuses estranhos na terra de vocês. Por isso, terão de servir a estrangeiros numa terra que não é de vocês."

20 Anunciem isto na casa de Jacó

e façam uma proclamação em Judá,

dizendo:

21 "Escute agora isto, povo tolo

e sem entendimento,

vocês que têm olhos e não veem,

têm ouvidos e não ouvem.

22 Por que não me temem?" —

diz o Senhor.

"Por que não tremem

diante de mim?

Pois fui eu que pus a areia

como limite do mar,

limite perpétuo,

que ele não irá ultrapassar.

Ainda que se levantem

as suas ondas,

elas não prevalecerão;

ainda que bramem,

não passarão daquele limite.

23 Mas este povo tem um coração

teimoso e rebelde;

desviaram-se e se foram.

24 Em seu coração não dizem:

‘Temamos agora o Senhor,

nosso Deus,

que nos dá a seu tempo as chuvas,

as primeiras e as últimas,

e que nos reserva as semanas

determinadas da colheita.’

25 As maldades que vocês fizeram

desviaram essas coisas boas,

e os seus pecados afastaram

de vocês o bem.

26 Porque no meio do meu povo

se encontram ímpios,

que andam espiando,

como espreitam os passarinheiros.

Como eles, preparam armadilhas

e prendem os homens.

27 Como uma gaiola

cheia de pássaros,

assim as casas deles estão

cheias de fraude;

por isso, se tornaram poderosos

e enriqueceram.

28 Engordaram, ficaram estufados

e não há limite

para as suas maldades.

Não julgam a causa dos órfãos,

para que ela prospere,

nem defendem o direito

dos necessitados.

29 Deixaria eu de castigar

estas coisas?" —

diz o Senhor.

"Não deveria eu me vingar

de uma nação como esta?"

30 Coisa espantosa e horrenda

se anda fazendo na terra:

31 os profetas profetizam

falsamente,

e os sacerdotes dominam

de mãos dadas com eles.

E é o que o meu povo deseja.

Porém o que é que vocês farão

quando o fim chegar?
