1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadrezzar. 2 Now at that time the king of Babylon’s army besieged Jerusalem: and Jeremiah the prophet was shut up in the court of the guard, which was in the king of Judah’s house. 3 For Zedekiah king of Judah had shut him up, saying, Wherefore dost thou prophesy, and say, Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall take it; 4 and Zedekiah king of Judah shall not escape out of the hand of the Chaldeans, but shall surely be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon, and shall speak with him mouth to mouth, and his eyes shall behold his eyes; 5 and he shall lead Zedekiah to Babylon, and there shall he be until I visit him, saith the LORD: though ye fight with the Chaldeans, ye shall not prosper? 6 And Jeremiah said, The word of the LORD came unto me, saying, 7 Behold, Hanamel the son of Shallum thine uncle shall come unto thee, saying, Buy thee my field that is in Anathoth: for the right of redemption is thine to buy it. 8 So Hanamel mine uncle’s son came to me in the court of the guard according to the word of the LORD, and said unto me, Buy my field, I pray thee, that is in Anathoth, which is in the land of Benjamin: for the right of inheritance is thine, and the redemption is thine; buy it for thyself. Then I knew that this was the word of the LORD. 9 And I bought the field that was in Anathoth of Hanamel mine uncle’s son, and weighed him the money, even seventeen shekels of silver. 10 And I subscribed the deed, and sealed it, and called witnesses, and weighed him the money in the balances. 11 So I took the deed of the purchase, both that which was sealed, according to the law and custom, and that which was open: 12 and I delivered the deed of the purchase unto Baruch the son of Neriah, the son of Mahseiah, in the presence of Hanamel mine uncle’s son, and in the presence of the witnesses that subscribed the deed of the purchase, before all the Jews that sat in the court of the guard. 13 And I charged Baruch before them, saying, 14 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Take these deeds, this deed of the purchase, both that which is sealed, and this deed which is open, and put them in an earthen vessel; that they may continue many days. 15 For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Houses and fields and vineyards shall yet again be bought in this land. 16 Now after I had delivered the deed of the purchase unto Baruch the son of Neriah, I prayed unto the LORD, saying, 17 Ah Lord GOD! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and by thy stretched out arm; there is nothing too hard for thee: 18 which shewest mercy unto thousands, and recompensest the iniquity of the fathers into the bosom of their children after them: the great, the mighty God, the LORD of hosts is his name: 19 great in counsel, and mighty in work: whose eyes are open upon all the ways of the sons of men; to give every one according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings: 20 which didst set signs and wonders in the land of Egypt, even unto this day, both in Israel and among other men; and madest thee a name, as at this day; 21 and didst bring forth thy people Israel out of the land of Egypt with signs, and with wonders, and with a strong hand, and with a stretched out arm, and with great terror; 22 and gavest them this land, which thou didst swear to their fathers to give them, a land flowing milk and honey; 23 and they came in, and possessed it; but they obeyed not thy voice, neither walked in thy law; they have done nothing of all that thou commandedst them to do: therefore thou hast caused all this evil to come upon them: 24 Behold the mounts, they are come unto the city to take it; and the city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans that fight against it, because of the sword, and of the famine, and of the pestilence: and what thou hast spoken is come to pass; and, behold, thou seest it. 25 And thou hast said unto me, O Lord GOD, Buy thee the field for money, and call witnesses; whereas the city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans. 26 Then came the word of the LORD unto Jeremiah, saying, 27 Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me? 28 Therefore thus saith the LORD: Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the Chaldeans, and into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and he shall take it: 29 and the Chaldeans, that fight against this city, shall come and set this city on fire, and burn it, with the houses, upon whose roofs they have offered incense unto Baal, and poured out drink offerings unto other gods, to provoke me to anger. 30 For the children of Israel and the children of Judah have only done that which was evil in my sight from their youth: for the children of Israel have only provoked me to anger with the work of their hands, saith the LORD. 31 For this city hath been to me a provocation of mine anger and of my fury from the day that they built it even unto this day; that I should remove it from before my face: 32 because of all the evil of the children of Israel and of the children of Judah, which they have done to provoke me to anger, they, their kings, their princes, their priests, and their prophets, and the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 33 And they have turned unto me the back, and not the face: and though I taught them, rising up early and teaching them, yet they have not hearkened to receive instruction. 34 But they set their abominations in the house which is called by my name, to defile it. 35 And they built the high places of Baal, which are in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to cause their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire unto Molech; which I commanded them not, neither came it into my mind, that they should do this abomination; to cause Judah to sin. 36 And now therefore thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning this city, whereof ye say, It is given into the hand of the king of Babylon by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence: 37 Behold, I will gather them out of all the countries, whither I have driven them in mine anger, and in my fury, and in great wrath; and I will bring them again unto this place, and I will cause them to dwell safely: 38 and they shall be my people, and I will be their God: 39 and I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear me for ever; for the good of them, and of their children after them: 40 and I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; and I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me. 41 Yea, I will rejoice over them to do them good, and I will plant them in this land assuredly with my whole heart and with my whole soul. 42 For thus saith the LORD: Like as I have brought all this great evil upon this people, so will I bring upon them all the good that I have promised them. 43 And fields shall be bought in this land, whereof ye say, It is desolate, without man or beast; it is given into the hand of the Chaldeans; 44 Men shall buy fields for money, and subscribe the deeds, and seal them, and call witnesses, in the land of Benjamin, and in the places about Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, and in the cities of the hill country, and cities of the lowland, and in the cities of the South: for I will cause their captivity to return, saith the LORD.

1 Palavra que foi dita a Jeremias da parte do Senhor, no décimo ano do reinado de Zedequias, rei de Judá, ou décimo oitavo ano do reinado de Nabucodonosor. 2 Ora, nesse tempo o exército do rei da Babilônia cercava Jerusalém, e o profeta Jeremias estava preso no pátio da guarda que estava no palácio do rei de Judá. 3 Pois Zedequias, rei de Judá, o havia encerrado, dizendo:

— Como você ousa profetizar que o Senhor Deus disse que entregará esta cidade nas mãos do rei da Babilônia, e que este a conquistará? 4 Como ousa dizer que Zedequias, rei de Judá, não escapará das mãos dos caldeus, mas infalivelmente será entregue nas mãos do rei da Babilônia, vindo a falar com ele pessoalmente e vendo-o face a face? 5 Como ousa profetizar que ele levará Zedequias para a Babilônia, onde ficará até que o Senhor atente para ele, como ele mesmo disse, e que, se lutarmos contra os caldeus, não seremos bem-sucedidos?

6 Jeremias disse:

— A palavra do Senhor veio a mim, dizendo: 7 "Eis que Hanamel, filho de seu tio Salum, virá falar com você, dizendo: ‘Compre o meu campo que está em Anatote, pois, pela lei a respeito do resgate, compete a você comprá-lo.’"

8 — Então, exatamente como o Senhor tinha dito, Hanamel, filho de meu tio, veio falar comigo no pátio da guarda e me disse: "Compre o meu campo que está em Anatote, na terra de Benjamim, porque você tem o direito de posse e de resgate. Compre!" Então entendi que isto era a palavra do Senhor.

9 Assim comprei de Hanamel, filho de meu tio, o campo que está em Anatote e pesei o dinheiro para ele: duzentos gramas de prata. 10 Assinei a escritura, fechei-a com selo, chamei testemunhas e pesei o dinheiro numa balança. 11 Peguei a escritura da compra, tanto a selada, que continha o contrato e as condições, como a cópia aberta, 12 e entreguei essa escritura da compra a Baruque, filho de Nerias, filho de Maaseias, na presença de Hanamel, filho de meu tio, na presença das testemunhas que assinaram a escritura da compra, e na presença de todos os judeus que estavam sentados no pátio da guarda. 13 Na presença deles dei uma ordem a Baruque, dizendo:

14 — Assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos, o Deus de Israel: Pegue estas escrituras da compra, tanto a selada como a aberta, e coloque-as num vaso de barro, para que se conservem por muitos dias. 15 Porque assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos, o Deus de Israel: Ainda se comprarão casas, campos e vinhas nesta terra.

16 Depois que dei a escritura da compra a Baruque, filho de Nerias, orei ao Senhor, dizendo:

17 — Ah! Senhor Deus, eis que tu fizeste os céus e a terra com o teu grande poder e com o teu braço estendido; nada é demasiadamente difícil para ti. 18 Tu fazes misericórdia até mil gerações, mas também retribuis a iniquidade dos pais nos filhos. Tu és o grande, o poderoso Deus, cujo nome é Senhor dos Exércitos, 19 grande em conselho e magnífico em obras. Os teus olhos estão abertos sobre todos os caminhos dos filhos dos homens, para dar a cada um segundo o seu proceder, segundo o fruto das suas obras. 20 Fizeste sinais e maravilhas na terra do Egito até o dia de hoje, tanto em Israel como em toda a humanidade, e assim adquiriste a fama que tens até o dia de hoje. 21 Tiraste o teu povo de Israel da terra do Egito, com sinais e maravilhas, com mão poderosa e braço estendido e com grande espanto, 22 e lhe deste esta terra, que com juramento prometeste aos seus pais, terra que mana leite e mel. 23 Entraram nela e dela tomaram posse, mas não obedeceram à tua voz, nem andaram na tua lei; de tudo o que lhes mandaste que fizessem, nada fizeram. Por isso, trouxeste sobre eles todo este mal.

24 — Eis que rampas de ataque já foram construídas ao redor da cidade, para ser tomada, e a cidade, vencida pela espada, pela fome e pela peste, cairá nas mãos dos caldeus, que lutam contra ela. Como vês, aquilo que disseste aconteceu. 25 No entanto, Senhor Deus, tu me disseste: "Compre o campo por dinheiro e chame testemunhas", embora a cidade já esteja sendo entregue nas mãos dos caldeus.

26 Então a palavra do Senhor veio a Jeremias, dizendo:

27 — Eis que eu sou o Senhor, o Deus de toda a humanidade. Será que existe algo demasiadamente difícil para mim? 28 Portanto, assim diz o Senhor: Eis que entregarei esta cidade nas mãos dos caldeus, nas mãos de Nabucodonosor, rei da Babilônia, e ele a tomará. 29 Os caldeus, que lutam contra esta cidade, entrarão nela, porão fogo nesta cidade e queimarão as casas sobre cujos terraços queimaram incenso a Baal e ofereceram libações a outros deuses, para me provocarem à ira. 30 Porque os filhos de Israel e os filhos de Judá só fizeram o que é mau aos meus olhos, desde a sua mocidade. Tudo o que os filhos de Israel fizeram foi provocar-me à ira com as obras das suas mãos, diz o Senhor. 31 Porque esta cidade, desde o dia em que a construíram até o dia de hoje, tem servido para provocar a minha ira e o meu furor. Por isso, vou removê-la da minha presença, 32 por causa de toda a maldade que os filhos de Israel e os filhos de Judá fizeram, para me provocarem à ira, eles, os seus reis, as suas autoridades, os seus sacerdotes e os seus profetas, bem como o povo de Judá e os moradores de Jerusalém. 33 Eles me viraram as costas e não o rosto. E, embora eu os ensinasse sempre de novo, eles não quiseram ouvir, para receberem a advertência. 34 Pelo contrário, puseram as suas abominações no templo que se chama pelo meu nome, para o profanarem. 35 Edificaram os altos de Baal, que estão no vale de Ben-Hinom, para queimarem os seus filhos e as suas filhas em sacrifício a Moloque, algo que nunca lhes ordenei, nem me passou pela mente que fizessem tal abominação, para levarem Judá a pecar.

36 — Agora, pois, assim diz o Senhor, o Deus de Israel, a respeito desta cidade, da qual vocês dizem que já foi entregue nas mãos do rei da Babilônia, pela espada, pela fome e pela peste. 37 Eis que eu os congregarei de todas as terras, para onde os dispersei na minha ira, no meu furor e na minha grande indignação. Eu os farei voltar a este lugar e farei com que nele habitem em segurança.

38 — Eles serão o meu povo, e eu serei o seu Deus. 39 Eu lhes darei um só coração e um só caminho, para que me temam todos os dias, para o seu próprio bem e o bem de seus filhos. 40 Farei com eles uma aliança eterna, segundo a qual não deixarei de lhes fazer o bem; porei o meu temor no coração deles, para que nunca se afastem de mim. 41 Terei alegria em lhes fazer o bem, e os plantarei firmemente nesta terra, de todo o meu coração e de toda a minha alma.

42 — Porque assim diz o Senhor: Assim como fiz vir sobre este povo todo este grande mal, assim lhes trarei todo o bem que lhes estou prometendo. 43 Ainda se comprarão campos nesta terra, da qual vocês dizem: "Está deserta, sem pessoas e sem animais; foi entregue nas mãos dos caldeus." 44 Comprarão campos por dinheiro, assinarão as escrituras e as fecharão com selos, e chamarão testemunhas, na terra de Benjamim, nos arredores de Jerusalém, nas cidades de Judá, nas cidades da região montanhosa, nas cidades da Sefelá e nas cidades do Sul. Porque eu os trarei de volta do cativeiro, diz o Senhor.
