Te Whakawhitinga Kōrero Tuarua

1 Nā, ka whakautua e Eripāta Temani, i mea ia:

2 "He horihori kau koia te mātauranga e whakapuakina e te tangata whakaaro,

kia whakakīia e ia tōna kōpū ki te hau marangai?

3 Me kōrero rānei ia ko ngā kupu kore hua hei ako,

ko ngā whaikōrero rānei kāhore nei e whai tikanga?

4 Āe, kua whakakorea atu nā e koe te wehi,

kei te pupuri mai koe i te īnoi i te aroaro o te Atua.

5 Nā, kei te whakaakona tōu māngai e tōu kino,

ā, kei te whiriwhiria e koe ko te arero o te hunga tinihanga.

6 Ehara i ahau, nā tōu māngai anō i hopu tōu kino;

ko ōu ngutu anō hei whakaatu i tōu hē.

7 "Ko koe ianei te tangata tuatahi kua whānau?

He mea hanga rānei koe nō mua atu i ngā pukepuke?

8 Kua rongo rānei koe i tō te Atua whakaaro puku?

Kei te kaiponu rānei koe i te whakaaro ki a koe anake?

9 Ko te aha te mōhiotia ana e koe, ā, kāhore e mōhiotia e mātou?

Ko tēhea whakaaro anō hoki ōu kāhore nei i a mātou?

10 Kei a mātou ngā upoko hina rātou tahi ko ngā tino koroheke,

kaumātua rawa ake i tōu pāpā.

11 He iti rawa rānei mōu ngā whakamārie a te Atua,

te kupu ngāwari e hoatu ana ki a koe?

12 He aha koe i kāhakina atu ai e tōu ngākau?

He aha hoki ōu kanohi i kimokimo ai,

13 i tahuri ai tōu wairua ki te whakahē i te Atua,

i puaki ai ēnā kupu i tōu māngai?

14 "He aha te tangata, e mā ai ia,

te whānau rānei a te wahine, e tika ai?

15 Nanā, kāhore ia e whakawhirinaki ki āna mea tapu;

kāhore hoki ngā rangi e mā ki tāna titiro.

16 Kātahi ia te hē rawa ko te mea whakarihariha,

ko te mea poke, ko te tangata e inu nei i te kino ānō he wai.

17 "Māku e whakaatu ki a koe, whakarongo mai ki ahau;

ko te mea kua kitea e ahau, māku e kōrero atu –

18 he mea kōrero mai nā ngā mōhio,

he whakarerenga iho nā ō rātou mātua;

kīhai hoki i hunā e rātou,

19 ki a rātou nei anake te hōmaitanga o te whenua;

kīhai hoki te tangata kē i tika i waenganui i a rātou.

20 E whakamamae ana te tangata kino i ōna rā katoa,

e mea ana, ‘Kei hea rā?’

24 Ko te ngākau mamae, me te tūmatatenga, hei whakawehi i a ia;

ka kaha ake rāua i a ia,

me te mea he kīngi kua rite ana mea mō te whawhai.

25 Kua totoro nei ōna ringa ki te whawhai ki te Atua,

kua whakatoatoa nei i a ia ki te whawhai ki te Kaha Rawa;

26 kua rere ki a ia me te kakī mārō,

me ngā puku mātotoru o āna whakangungu rākau.

27 "Kua kōpakina hoki tōna mata e tōna ngako,

ā, kua tupu te ngako o tōna hope.

28 Nā, i noho ia ki ngā pā mahue,

ki ngā whare kāhore i nohoia e te tangata,

meāke nei waiho hei pūranga.

29 E kore ia e whai taonga, e kore anō ōna rawa e mau,

e kore anō hoki tō rātou hua e tāupe ki te whenua.

30 E kore ia e puta i te pōuri, ōna peka ka maroke i te mura,

ka riro atu anō ia i te manawa o tōna māngai.

31 Kei whakawhirinaki ia ki te mea teka noa, kei tinihanga ki a ia anō;

nō te mea ko te teka noa hei utu ki a ia.

32 E kore tōna rā e taea, kua rite;

e kore anō tōna peka e whai rau.

33 Ka ruiruia e ia āna karepe kaiota ānō ko te wāina,

ā, ka makā tāna puāwai me te mea ko te ōriwa.

34 Ka pakoko hoki te whakaminenga o te hunga atuakore,

ka pau hoki i te ahi ngā tēneti o ngā utu whakapati.

35 He mahi nanakia te mea i hapū ki roto ki a rātou,

whānau ake he teka noa;

ko ō rātou kōpū anō hei hanga i te tinihanga."

1 Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,

2 Should a wise man make answer with vain knowledge,

And fill himself with the east wind?

3 Should he reason with unprofitable talk,

Or with speeches wherewith he can do no good?

4 Yea, thou doest away with fear,

And hinderest devotion before God.

5 For thine iniquity teacheth thy mouth,

And thou choosest the tongue of the crafty.

6 Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I;

Yea, thine own lips testify against thee.

7 Art thou the first man that was born?

Or wast thou brought forth before the hills?

8 Hast thou heard the secret counsel of God?

And dost thou limit wisdom to thyself?

9 What knowest thou, that we know not?

What understandest thou, which is not in us?

10 With us are both the gray-headed and the very aged men,

Much elder than thy father.

11 Are the consolations of God too small for thee,

Even the word that is gentle toward thee?

12 Why doth thy heart carry thee away?

And why do thine eyes flash,

13 That against God thou turnest thy spirit,

And lettest words go out of thy mouth?

14 What is man, that he should be clean?

And he that is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?

15 Behold, he putteth no trust in his holy ones;

Yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight:

16 How much less one that is abominable and corrupt,

A man that drinketh iniquity like water!

17 I will show thee, hear thou me;

And that which I have seen I will declare

18 (Which wise men have told

From their fathers, and have not hid it;

19 Unto whom alone the land was given,

And no stranger passed among them):

20 The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days,

Even the number of years that are laid up for the oppressor.

21 A sound of terrors is in his ears;

In prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.

22 He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness,

And he is waited for of the sword.

23 He wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it?

He knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.

24 Distress and anguish make him afraid;

They prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.

25 Because he hath stretched out his hand against God,

And behaveth himself proudly against the Almighty;

26 He runneth upon him with a stiff neck,

With the thick bosses of his bucklers;

27 Because he hath covered his face with his fatness,

And gathered fat upon his loins;

28 And he hath dwelt in desolate cities,

In houses which no man inhabited,

Which were ready to become heaps;

29 He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue,

Neither shall their possessions be extended on the earth.

30 He shall not depart out of darkness;

The flame shall dry up his branches,

And by the breath of God’s mouth shall he go away.

31 Let him not trust in vanity, deceiving himself;

For vanity shall be his recompense.

32 It shall be accomplished before his time,

And his branch shall not be green.

33 He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine,

And shall cast off his flower as the olive-tree.

34 For the company of the godless shall be barren,

And fire shall consume the tents of bribery.

35 They conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity,

And their heart prepareth deceit.
