Ka Whakautu a Ihowā ki a Hopa

1 Kātahi a Ihowā ka whakahoki kupu ki a Hopa i roto i te tūkauati, ā, ka mea:

2 "Ko wai tēnei e whakapōuri nei i ngā whakaaro

ki ngā kupu kāhore ōna mātauranga?

3 Tēnā rā, whītikiria tōu hope, whakatāne;

ka ui hoki ahau ki a koe,

ā, māu e whakaatu mai ki ahau.

4 "I hea koia koe i ahau e whakatakoto ana i te tūranga o te whenua?

Whakaaturia mai, ki te mea e mōhio ana koe ki te whakaaro.

5 Nā wai i whakarite ōna rūri? Ki te mea e mōhio ana koe;

nā wai hoki i whakamārō te aho ki runga?

6 I whakaūkia ōna tūranga ki runga ki te aha?

Nā wai hoki i whakatakoto tōna kōhatu kokonga;

7 i te mea i waiata ngātahi ngā whetū o te ata,

ā, i hāmama ngā tama katoa a te Atua i te koa?

8 "Nā wai hoki i tūtaki te moana ki te tatau, i a ia e puta mai ana,

me te mea e whānau mai ana i roto i te kōpū?

9 I ahau rā i mea ai i te kapua hei kākahu mōna,

i te pōuri kerekere hei tākai mōna.

10 Ā, whakapuakina ana e ahau tāku tikanga mōna,

mea rawa ki ngā tūtaki, ki ngā tatau,

11 me tāku kī atu anō, ‘Ka taea mai e koe a konei, kāti;

hei konei ōu ngaru whakakake mau ai’?

12 "Ko koe koia, i ōu rā nei, te kaiwhakahau i te ata;

nāu rānei te pūaotanga i mōhio ai ki tōna wāhi;

13 kia rurukutia e ia ngā pito o te whenua,

ā, ruperupea ake ngā tāngata kikino i roto?

14 Kua whiti kē, kua pērā anō me te paru i te hīri;

tū ake ana ngā mea katoa ānō he kākahu.

15 Ā, e kaiponuhia ana tō rātou mārama ki te hunga kino,

whati iho te ringa whakakake.

16 "Kua tae atu rānei koe ki ngā mātāpuna o te moana?

Kua whakatakina haeretia rānei e koe te rire?

17 Kua whakapuaretia rānei ki a koe ngā kūwaha o te mate?

Kua kite rānei koe i ngā kūwaha o te ātārangi o te mate?

18 Kua oti rānei te whakaaro e koe te whānuitanga o te whenua?

Kōrero mai, ki te mea e mōhiotia katoatia ana e koe.

19 "Kei hea te ara ki te nohoanga o te mārama?

Te pōuri hoki, kei hea tōna wāhi?

20 Kia kawea atu ai e koe ki tōna rohe,

ā, mōhio iho koe ki ngā huarahi ki tōna whare?

21 I mōhio pea koe nō te mea i whānau koe i taua wā,

ā, he maha ōu rā!

22 "Kua tomo rānei koe ki ngā takotoranga o te hukarere,

kua kite rānei koe i ngā takotoranga o te whatu,

23 i āku i rongoā ai mō te wā o te hē,

mō te rā o te tatauranga, o te pakanga?

24 Tēnā koa, te ara i marara atu ai te mārama,

i pakaru atu ai te marangai ki runga ki te whenua?

25 "Nā wai i wehe he awa mō te waipuke,

he ara mō te uira o te whatitiri;

26 kia ua ai ki te whenua, ki te wāhi kāhore nei he tangata;

ki te koraha, kāhore nei ō reira tangata;

27 hei whakamākona i te tūhea, i te ururua;

hei mea kia pariri te tupu o te otaota hou?

28 "He matua tāne anō rānei tō te ua?

I whānau rānei i a wai ngā pata o te tōmairangi?

29 I puta mai i roto i tō wai kōpū te huka tio?

Ko te huka o te rangi, he whānau tēnā nā wai?

30 Me te mea he kōhatu e huna ana i te wai;

ā, whakatotoka ana te mata o te rire.

31 "E taea rānei e koe te here te huihui o Matariki,

e wewete rānei ngā here o Tautoru?

32 E taea rānei e koe te ārahi mai te Mataroto i tōna wā,

te taki mai rānei a Aketura rātou ko tāna rōpū?

33 E mōhio ana rānei koe ki ngā tikanga o te rangi?

Māu rānei e whai mana ai ki runga ki te whenua?

34 "E ara rānei i a koe tōu reo ki ngā kapua,

kia nui ai ngā wai hei taupoki i a koe?

35 E taea rānei e koe ngā uira te unga atu, e haere ai rātou,

me tā rātou kī anō ki a koe, ‘Tēnei mātou’?

36 Nā wai i whakanoho ngā whakaaro nunui ki ngā wāhi o roto?

Nā wai i hōmai ngā mahara ki te ngākau?

37 Ko wai te mea whakaaro nui hei tatau i ngā kapua?

Ko wai hei tāhoro i ngā ipu o te rangi?

38 Ina ka papatupu te puehu anō he mea whakarewa,

ā, ka piri ngā pōkuru ki a rātou anō?

39 "Māu rānei e hopu he kai mā te raiona?

Māu e nui ai he oranga mō ngā kūao raiona,

40 ina tāpapa iho rātou i ō rātou nohoanga,

ina noho i te piringa whanga ai?

41 Nā wai i rite ai tāna kai mā te raweni,

ina tangi āna pī ki te Atua,

ina kōpikopiko rātou i te kore kai?"

1 Then Jehovah answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said,

2 Who is this that darkeneth counsel

By words without knowledge?

3 Gird up now thy loins like a man;

For I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me.

4 Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth?

Declare, if thou hast understanding.

5 Who determined the measures thereof, if thou knowest?

Or who stretched the line upon it?

6 Whereupon were the foundations thereof fastened?

Or who laid the corner-stone thereof,

7 When the morning stars sang together,

And all the sons of God shouted for joy?

8 Or who shut up the sea with doors,

When it brake forth, as if it had issued out of the womb;

9 When I made clouds the garment thereof,

And thick darkness a swaddling-band for it,

10 And marked out for it my bound,

And set bars and doors,

11 And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further;

And here shall thy proud waves be stayed?

12 Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days began,

And caused the dayspring to know its place;

13 That it might take hold of the ends of the earth,

And the wicked be shaken out of it?

14 It is changed as clay under the seal;

And all things stand forth as a garment:

15 And from the wicked their light is withholden,

And the high arm is broken.

16 Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea?

Or hast thou walked in the recesses of the deep?

17 Have the gates of death been revealed unto thee?

Or hast thou seen the gates of the shadow of death?

18 Hast thou comprehended the earth in its breadth?

Declare, if thou knowest it all.

19 Where is the way to the dwelling of light?

And as for darkness, where is the place thereof,

20 That thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof,

And that thou shouldest discern the paths to the house thereof?

21 Doubtless, thou knowest, for thou wast then born,

And the number of thy days is great!

22 Hast thou entered the treasuries of the snow,

Or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail,

23 Which I have reserved against the time of trouble,

Against the day of battle and war?

24 By what way is the light parted,

Or the east wind scattered upon the earth?

25 Who hath cleft a channel for the waterflood,

Or the way for the lightning of the thunder;

26 To cause it to rain on a land where no man is;

On the wilderness, wherein there is no man;

27 To satisfy the waste and desolate ground,

And to cause the tender grass to spring forth?

28 Hath the rain a father?

Or who hath begotten the drops of dew?

29 Out of whose womb came the ice?

And the hoary frost of heaven, who hath gendered it?

30 The waters hide themselves and become like stone,

And the face of the deep is frozen.

31 Canst thou bind the cluster of the Pleiades,

Or loose the bands of Orion?

32 Canst thou lead forth the Mazzaroth in their season?

Or canst thou guide the Bear with her train?

33 Knowest thou the ordinances of the heavens?

Canst thou establish the dominion thereof in the earth?

34 Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds,

That abundance of waters may cover thee?

35 Canst thou send forth lightnings, that they may go,

And say unto thee, Here we are?

36 Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts?

Or who hath given understanding to the mind?

37 Who can number the clouds by wisdom?

Or who can pour out the bottles of heaven,

38 When the dust runneth into a mass,

And the clods cleave fast together?

39 Canst thou hunt the prey for the lioness,

Or satisfy the appetite of the young lions,

40 When they couch in their dens,

And abide in the covert to lie in wait?

41 Who provideth for the raven his prey,

When his young ones cry unto God,

And wander for lack of food?
