Ka Whakatika tonu a Eripata

1 "Tēnā rā, karanga; ka whakaō rānei tētahi ki a koe?

Ā, ka anga atu koe ki a wai o te hunga tapu?

2 E patua ana hoki te kūware e te āritarita,

e whakamatea ana te whakaarokore e te hae.

3 I kite ahau i te kūware e hou ana ōna pakiaka;

kitea rawatia ake kua kangā e ahau tōna nohoanga.

4 Kei tawhiti atu āna tama i te ora,

mongamonga noa rātou i te kūwaha,

kāhore hoki he kaiwhakaora.

5 Ko āna hua ka kainga e te tangata matekai,

ka riro i a ia ahakoa i roto i te tātarāmoa,

ā, ka hāmama te māhanga ki ō rātou rawa.

6 Nā, e kore te hē e puta ake i te puehu,

e kore anō te raruraru e tupu ake i te oneone;

7 i whānau te tangata ki te raruraru,

tōna rite kei ngā korakora e rere nei whakarunga.

8 "Ko ahau ia ka rapu i tā te Atua;

me tuku atu tāku kōrero ki te Atua.

9 E mahi nei i ngā mea nunui e kore nei e taea te rapu atu,

i ngā mea whakamīharo e kore nei e taea te tatau.

10 E hōmai nei i te ua ki te mata o te whenua,

e unga nei i te wai ki te mata o ngā pārae;

11 e whakanoho nei i te hunga iti ki te wāhi tiketike,

ā, whakanekehia ake ana te hunga pōuri ki te ora.

12 E haukoti nei i ngā whakaaro o te hunga tinihanga,

tē taea e ō rātou ringa tā rātou i mea ai.

13 Mau ake i a ia te hunga whakaaro i tō rātou tinihanga:

pororaru iho ngā whakaaro o te hunga kotiti kē.

14 I te awatea nei, tūtaki ana rātou ki te pōuri;

whāwhā ana rātou i te poutūmārōtanga, ānō ko te pō.

15 Otiia, e whakaorangia ana e ia te rawakore i te hoari, i tō rātou māngai,

i te ringa anō o te tangata kaha.

16 Ka ai anō he tūmanakohanga atu mō te ware;

kokopi tonu ia te māngai o te kino.

17 "Nanā, ka hari te tangata e ākona ana e te Atua;

nā, kaua e whakahāwea ki te papaki a te Kaha Rawa.

18 He whakamamae hoki tāna, he takai anō;

e patu ana ia, ā, ko ōna ringa anō hei whakaora.

19 E ono ngā matenga e whakaora ai ia i a koe;

ahakoa e whitu, e kore te hē e pā ki a koe.

20 I te matekai ka hokona koe e ia kei mate;

i te tatauranga anō, kei pāngia e te hoari.

21 Ka huna koe i te whiu a te arero,

e kore anō koe e wehi i te whakangaromanga ina tae mai.

22 E kata anō koe ki te whakangaromanga rāua ko te hemokai;

e kore hoki koe e wehi i ngā kīrehe o te whenua.

23 Nō te mea ka takoto tāu kawenata ki ngā kōhatu o te pārae;

ka mau anō tā koutou rongo ko ngā kīrehe o te pārae.

24 Ka mōhio anō koe e tū ana tōu tēneti i te āionuku,

ka hāereere anō koe ki tōu nohoanga, tē ai he hara.

25 Ka mōhio anō koe he nui ōu uri,

he pērā anō tōu whānau me te tarutaru o te whenua.

26 Ka āta rite ōu tau ina tae koe ki te urupā,

ka pērā anō me te pūranga wīti e hikitia ake ana i tōna wā e rite ai.

27 "Nanā, tēnei, he mea rapu nā mātou, ko te mea tika hoki ia;

whakarangona mai, ka mōhio iho hei pai mōu."

1 Call now; is there any that will answer thee?

And to which of the holy ones wilt thou turn?

2 For vexation killeth the foolish man,

And jealousy slayeth the silly one.

3 I have seen the foolish taking root:

But suddenly I cursed his habitation.

4 His children are far from safety,

And they are crushed in the gate,

Neither is there any to deliver them:

5 Whose harvest the hungry eateth up,

And taketh it even out of the thorns;

And the snare gapeth for their substance.

6 For affliction cometh not forth from the dust,

Neither doth trouble spring out of the ground;

7 But man is born unto trouble,

As the sparks fly upward.

8 But as for me, I would seek unto God,

And unto God would I commit my cause;

9 Who doeth great things and unsearchable,

Marvellous things without number:

10 Who giveth rain upon the earth,

And sendeth waters upon the fields;

11 So that he setteth up on high those that are low,

And those that mourn are exalted to safety.

12 He frustrateth the devices of the crafty,

So that their hands cannot perform their enterprise.

13 He taketh the wise in their own craftiness;

And the counsel of the cunning is carried headlong.

14 They meet with darkness in the day-time,

And grope at noonday as in the night.

15 But he saveth from the sword of their mouth,

Even the needy from the hand of the mighty.

16 So the poor hath hope,

And iniquity stoppeth her mouth.

17 Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth:

Therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty.

18 For he maketh sore, and bindeth up;

He woundeth, and his hands make whole.

19 He will deliver thee in six troubles;

Yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee.

20 In famine he will redeem thee from death;

And in war from the power of the sword.

21 Thou shalt be hid from the scourge of the tongue;

Neither shalt thou be afraid of destruction when it cometh.

22 At destruction and dearth thou shalt laugh;

Neither shalt thou be afraid of the beasts of the earth.

23 For thou shalt be in league with the stones of the field;

And the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee.

24 And thou shalt know that thy tent is in peace;

And thou shalt visit thy fold, and shalt miss nothing.

25 Thou shalt know also that thy seed shall be great,

And thine offspring as the grass of the earth.

26 Thou shalt come to thy grave in a full age,

Like as a shock of grain cometh in in its season.

27 Lo this, we have searched it, so it is;

Hear it, and know thou it for thy good.
