1 "Kua oti tāku kawenata ki ōku kanohi;

kia whakaaroaro ahau hei aha ki te kōtiro?

2 He aha tā te Atua wāhi e tuwha mai ai i runga?

He aha tā te Kaha Rawa taonga tupu i te wāhi tiketike?

3 He teka ianei he whakangaromanga mō te tangata kino,

he whiu mō ngā kaimahi o te hē?

4 He teka ianei e kitea ana e ia ōku ara,

e taua ana e ia ōku hīkoinga katoa?

5 "Ki te mea i haere ahau i runga i te tekateka noa,

ā, i hohoro tōku waewae ki te tinihanga –

6 kia pāunatia ahau i runga i te pāuna tika,

kia mōhio ai te Atua ki tōku tapatahi –

7 ki te mea i kotiti kē tōku hīkoinga i te ara,

ā, i whai tōku ngākau i ōku kanohi;

ā, ki te mea i mau te tongi ki ōku ringa;

8 kāti, ko ahau hei whakatō, ā, mā tētahi atu e kai;

āe rā, tukua ngā hua o tāku māra kia hūtia atu.

9 "Ki te mea i whakawairangitia tōku ngākau e te wahine,

ā, i whanga ahau i te tatau o tōku hoa;

10 heoi kia huri parāoa tāku wahine mā tētahi atu,

kia piko iho anō hoki ngā tāngata kē ki runga i a ia.

11 He kino rawa hoki tērā;

āe rā, he hē e tika ana kia whiua e ngā kaiwhakawā.

12 He ahi hoki tērā e kai ana ki te whakangaromanga rawa,

poto noa āku hua katoa.

13 "Ki te mea i whakahāweatia e ahau te whakawā

a tāku pononga tāne, a tāku pononga wahine,

i a rāua e totohe ana ki ahau;

14 ka pēhea rā ahau ina whakatika te Atua?

He aha tāku kupu e whakahoki ai ki a ia ina tae mai ia ki te titiro?

15 He teka rānei nā tōku kaihanga ia i hanga i roto i te kōpū?

Ā, nāna, nā te kotahi, i whai āhua ai māua i roto i te puku?

16 "Ki te mea i kaiponuhia e ahau tā ngā rawakore i hiahia ai,

ā, meinga ana e ahau ngā kanohi o te pouaru kia pau i te minamina;

17 ki te mea rānei i kainga tāku maramara e tōku kotahi,

ā, kīhai te pani i kai i tētahi wāhi –

18 he mea whakatupu ia nāku nō tōku taitamarikitanga rā anō me te mea ko tōna pāpā ahau;

ko te pouaru he mea ārahi nāku nō te kōpū rā anō o tōku whaea –

19 ki te mea i kite ahau i tētahi e tata ana ki te mate, he kore nō te kākahu,

ā, kāhore he uhi mō te rawakore;

20 ki te mea kīhai tōna hope i whakapai ki ahau,

ā, kīhai ia i mahana i ngā huruhuru o tāku kāhui;

21 ki te mea i ara tōku ringa hei pēhi i te pani,

i tōku kitenga he āwhina tērā mōku kei te kūwaha;

22 nā, kia marere atu tōku pokohiwi i roto i te peke,

kia whati te tākakau o tōku ringa.

23 Ko te whiu hoki a te Atua tāku i wehi ai;

kīhai hoki i taea e ahau te aha i tōna nui.

24 "Ki te mea i ū tōku whakaaro ki te kōura,

ā, i mea ahau ki te kōura parakore,

‘Ko koe tāku e whakawhirinaki atu ai’;

25 ki te mea i koa ahau ki te maha o ōku rawa,

ā, ki te nui o tā tōku ringa i whiwhi ai;

26 ki te mea i kite ahau i te rā e whiti ana,

i te marama rānei e haere ana i tōna tīahotanga;

27 ā, ka kūmea pukutia atu tōku ngākau,

ka kihia tōku ringa e tōku māngai;

28 nā, he kino tēnei hei whiunga mā ngā kaiwhakawā:

he teka hoki nāku ki te Atua i runga.

29 "Ki te mea i koa ahau ki te whakangaromanga o te tangata i kino ki ahau,

i whakaara ake rānei i ahau i te pānga o te hē ki a ia –

30 āe, kīhai ahau i tuku i tōku māngai kia hara,

kīhai i whai kia kangā tōna wairua –

31 ki te mea kāhore ngā tāngata o tōku tēneti i mea,

‘Tēnā koa te tangata kīhai nei i mākona i tōna kikokiko?’

32 Kīhai te manene i moe i waho;

i whakatuwheratia anō e ahau ōku tatau ki te tangata haere;

33 ki te mea i pērā ahau me Ārama, i hīpoki i ōku hē,

i huna i tōku kino ki roto ki tōku uma;

34 i wehi hoki ahau i te huihui nui,

i mataku ki te whakahāwea a ngā hapū,

ā, whakarongo kau ana, kīhai hoki i puta ki waho –

35 auē, me i whakarongo mai tētahi ki ahau!

Nanā, tēnei tāku tohu, mā te Kaha Rawa e whakahoki mai he kupu ki ahau!

Me i ahau noa te pukapuka i tuhituhia e tōku hoariri!

36 Inā, kua amohia e ahau i runga i tōku pokohiwi;

kua herea e ahau hei karauna mōku.

37 Kua whakaaturia e ahau ki a ia te maha o ōku hīkoinga;

rite tonu ki tā te rangatira tāku whakatata atu ki a ia.

38 "Ki te tangi tāku oneone, he whakahē ki ahau,

ki te uru anō ōna moa ki te auē,

39 ki te mea i kainga e ahau ōna hua he mea kīhai i utua,

ā, nāku rānei ōna ariki i mate ai,

40 nā, kia riro pū te wīti i te tātarāmoa,

te pārei i te taru kino."

1 I made a covenant with mine eyes;

How then should I look upon a virgin?

2 For what is the portion from God above,

And the heritage from the Almighty on high?

3 Is it not calamity to the unrighteous,

And disaster to the workers of iniquity?

4 Doth not he see my ways,

And number all my steps?

5 If I have walked with falsehood,

And my foot hath hasted to deceit

6 (Let me be weighed in an even balance,

That God may know mine integrity);

7 If my step hath turned out of the way,

And my heart walked after mine eyes,

And if any spot hath cleaved to my hands:

8 Then let me sow, and let another eat;

Yea, let the produce of my field be rooted out.

9 If my heart hath been enticed unto a woman,

And I have laid wait at my neighbor’s door;

10 Then let my wife grind unto another,

And let others bow down upon her.

11 For that were a heinous crime;

Yea, it were an iniquity to be punished by the judges:

12 For it is a fire that consumeth unto Destruction,

And would root out all mine increase.

13 If I have despised the cause of my man-servant or of my maid-servant,

When they contended with me;

14 What then shall I do when God riseth up?

And when he visiteth, what shall I answer him?

15 Did not he that made me in the womb make him?

And did not one fashion us in the womb?

16 If I have withheld the poor from their desire,

Or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail,

17 Or have eaten my morsel alone,

And the fatherless hath not eaten thereof

18 (Nay, from my youth he grew up with me as with a father,

And her have I guided from my mother’s womb);

19 If I have seen any perish for want of clothing,

Or that the needy had no covering;

20 If his loins have not blessed me,

And if he hath not been warmed with the fleece of my sheep;

21 If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless,

Because I saw my help in the gate:

22 Then let my shoulder fall from the shoulder-blade,

And mine arm be broken from the bone.

23 For calamity from God is a terror to me,

And by reason of his majesty I can do nothing.

24 If I have made gold my hope,

And have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence;

25 If I have rejoiced because my wealth was great,

And because my hand had gotten much;

26 If I have beheld the sun when it shined,

Or the moon walking in brightness,

27 And my heart hath been secretly enticed,

And my mouth hath kissed my hand:

28 This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judges;

For I should have denied the God that is above.

29 If I have rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me,

Or lifted up myself when evil found him

30 (Yea, I have not suffered my mouth to sin

By asking his life with a curse);

31 If the men of my tent have not said,

Who can find one that hath not been filled with his meat?

32 (The sojourner hath not lodged in the street;

But I have opened my doors to the traveller);

33 If like Adam I have covered my transgressions,

By hiding mine iniquity in my bosom,

34 Because I feared the great multitude,

And the contempt of families terrified me,

So that I kept silence, and went not out of the door—

35 Oh that I had one to hear me!

(Lo, here is my signature, let the Almighty answer me)

And that I had the indictment which mine adversary hath written!

36 Surely I would carry it upon my shoulder;

I would bind it unto me as a crown:

37 I would declare unto him the number of my steps;

As a prince would I go near unto him.

38 If my land crieth out against me,

And the furrows thereof weep together;

39 If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money,

Or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life:

40 Let thistles grow instead of wheat,

And cockle instead of barley.
