Ka Kōhete a Erihu i a Hopa

1 "Tēnā rā, whakarongo, e Hopa, ki āku kōrero,

ā, nā te manawa o te Kaha Rawa ahau i whai ora ai.

5 Ki te taea e koe, whakahokia mai e koe he kupu ki ahau;

whakatikaia āu kōrero ki tōku aroaro; e tū ki runga.

6 Nanā, ko tōku anga ki te Atua he pēnā hoki i tāu;

he mea hanga nei anō hoki ahau ki te paru.

7 Nanā, e kore te wehi ki ahau e whakawehi i a koe;

e kore anō hoki tōku ringa e taimaha iho ki a koe.

8 "He pono kua hakiri ōku taringa ki āu kupu,

ā, kua rongo atu ahau i te reo o āu kupu, e mea ana,

9 ‘He mā ahau, kāhore ōku hē;

he harakore ahau, kāhore hoki he kino i roto i ahau.

10 Nā, e rapu ana ia i te take riri ki ahau,

e kīia ana ahau e ia he hoariri nōna;

11 e karapitia ana e ia ōku waewae ki te rākau,

e āta titiro ana ia ki ōku hīkoinga katoa.’

12 "Nanā, māku e whawhati tāu kupu,

ehara tēnei mea āu i te mea tika;

nui atu hoki te Atua i te tangata.

13 He aha koe i totohe ai ki a ia?

14 Kotahi hoki, āe rā, e rua kōrerotanga a te Atua,

otiia kāhore e maharatia e te tangata.

15 I te moe, i te putanga moemoeā mai o te pō,

i ngā moenga i runga i te takotoranga;

16 ko reira ia whakapuare ai i ngā taringa o ngā tāngata,

kia hīpokina ai hoki te whakapehapeha o te tangata;

18 e puritia ana e ia tōna wairua kei tae ki te rua,

tōna ora kei riro i te hoari.

19 E whiua ana hoki ia ki te mamae i runga i tōna moenga,

ki te ngau tonu hoki o ōna wheua;

20 ā, whakarihariha ana tōna ora ki te taro,

tōna wairua ki te kai whakaminamina.

21 E honia ana ōna kiko, ā, kore noa e kitea;

ā, pūrero mai ana ōna wheua kīhai nei i kitea i mua.

22 Heoi, e whakatata ana tōna wairua ki te rua,

tōna ora ki ngā kaiwhakamate.

23 "Ki te mea he karere tērā kei a ia,

he kaiwhakaatu tikanga tētahi i roto i te mano,

hei whakaatu i tōna tika ki te tangata:

24 Nā, ka tohu tērā i a ia, ā, ka mea,

‘Whakaorangia ia kei heke ki te rua,

kua kitea hoki e ahau he utu.’

25 Ko tōna kiri ka ngāwari atu i tō te tamaiti;

ka hoki iho ia ki ngā rā o tōna tamarikitanga.

26 Ka īnoi ia ki te Atua, ā, ka manako tērā ki a ia;

heoi ka kite ia i tōna mata i runga i te koa;

ā, ka utua e ia te tika o te tangata.

27 E waiata ana ia i te aroaro o ngā tāngata, e mea ana,

‘Kua hara ahau, whakaparoritia ake e ahau te tika,

ā, kāhore he pai ki ahau.

28 Kua whakaorangia e ia tōku wairua kei riro ki te rua,

ā, e kite tōku wairua i te mārama.’

29 "Nanā, e meatia ana ēnei mea katoa e te Atua,

e tuaruatia ana, āe, e tuatorutia ana, ki te tangata,

30 hei whakahoki mai i tōna wairua i roto i te rua,

kia whakamāramatia ai ki te mārama o te ora.

31 "Kia whai whakaaro mai, e Hopa, whakarongo mai ki ahau;

kāti tāu, ā, ka kōrero ahau.

32 Ki te mea he kupu tāu, utua mai tāku: kōrero,

ko tāku hoki i pai ai kia whakatikaia tāu.

33 Ki te kāhore, whakarongo ki ahau;

noho puku koe, ā, māku koe e whakaako ki te whakaaro nui."

1 Howbeit, Job, I pray thee, hear my speech,

And hearken to all my words.

2 Behold now, I have opened my mouth;

My tongue hath spoken in my mouth.

3 My words shall utter the uprightness of my heart;

And that which my lips know they shall speak sincerely.

4 The Spirit of God hath made me,

And the breath of the Almighty giveth me life.

5 If thou canst, answer thou me;

Set thy words in order before me, stand forth.

6 Behold, I am toward God even as thou art:

I also am formed out of the clay.

7 Behold, my terror shall not make thee afraid,

Neither shall my pressure be heavy upon thee.

8 Surely thou hast spoken in my hearing,

And I have heard the voice of thy words, saying,

9 I am clean, without transgression;

I am innocent, neither is there iniquity in me:

10 Behold, he findeth occasions against me,

He counteth me for his enemy;

11 He putteth my feet in the stocks,

He marketh all my paths.

12 Behold, I will answer thee, in this thou art not just;

For God is greater than man.

13 Why dost thou strive against him,

For that he giveth not account of any of his matters?

14 For God speaketh once,

Yea twice, though man regardeth it not.

15 In a dream, in a vision of the night,

When deep sleep falleth upon men,

In slumberings upon the bed;

16 Then he openeth the ears of men,

And sealeth their instruction,

17 That he may withdraw man from his purpose,

And hide pride from man;

18 He keepeth back his soul from the pit,

And his life from perishing by the sword.

19 He is chastened also with pain upon his bed,

And with continual strife in his bones;

20 So that his life abhorreth bread,

And his soul dainty food.

21 His flesh is consumed away, that it cannot be seen;

And his bones that were not seen stick out.

22 Yea, his soul draweth near unto the pit,

And his life to the destroyers.

23 If there be with him an angel,

An interpreter, one among a thousand,

To show unto man what is right for him;

24 Then God is gracious unto him, and saith,

Deliver him from going down to the pit,

I have found a ransom.

25 His flesh shall be fresher than a child’s;

He returneth to the days of his youth.

26 He prayeth unto God, and he is favorable unto him,

So that he seeth his face with joy:

And he restoreth unto man his righteousness.

27 He singeth before men, and saith,

I have sinned, and perverted that which was right,

And it profited me not:

28 He hath redeemed my soul from going into the pit,

And my life shall behold the light.

29 Lo, all these things doth God work,

Twice, yea thrice, with a man,

30 To bring back his soul from the pit,

That he may be enlightened with the light of the living.

31 Mark well, O Job, hearken unto me:

Hold thy peace, and I will speak.

32 If thou hast anything to say, answer me:

Speak, for I desire to justify thee.

33 If not, hearken thou unto me:

Hold thy peace, and I will teach thee wisdom.
