1 Se o Senhor não edificar a casa,
em vão trabalham
os que a edificam.
Se o Senhor não guardar a cidade,
em vão vigia a sentinela.
2 Será inútil levantar de madrugada,
dormir tarde,
comer o pão que conseguiram
com tanto esforço;
aos seus amados ele o dá
enquanto dormem.
3 Herança do Senhor são os filhos;
o fruto do ventre, seu galardão.
4 Como flechas
na mão do guerreiro,
assim são os filhos
da sua mocidade.
5 Feliz o homem que enche deles
a sua aljava;
não será envergonhado,
quando enfrentar
os seus inimigos no tribunal.

1 Except the LORD build the house, they labor in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman wakes but in vain.2 It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he gives his beloved sleep.3 See, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.4 As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth.5 Happy is the man that has his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.
