1 Então o rei deu ordem, e todos os anciãos de Judá e de Jerusalém se ajuntaram a ele. 2 O rei subiu à Casa do Senhor, e com ele foram todos os homens de Judá, todos os moradores de Jerusalém, os sacerdotes, os profetas e todo o povo, desde o menor até o maior. E o rei leu diante deles todas as palavras do Livro da Aliança que havia sido encontrado na Casa do Senhor. 3 O rei se pôs em pé junto à coluna e fez aliança diante do Senhor, para o seguir, guardar os seus mandamentos, os seus testemunhos e os seus estatutos, de todo o coração e de toda a alma, cumprindo as palavras desta aliança, que estavam escritas naquele livro. E todo o povo concordou com esta aliança.

4 Então o rei ordenou ao sumo sacerdote Hilquias, aos sacerdotes da segunda ordem e aos guardas da porta que tirassem do templo do Senhor todos os utensílios que tinham sido feitos para Baal, para o poste da deusa Aserá e para todo o exército dos céus. Ele os queimou fora de Jerusalém, nos campos do Cedrom, e levou as cinzas para Betel. 5 Josias destituiu os sacerdotes que os reis de Judá haviam escolhido para queimar incenso sobre os lugares altos nas cidades de Judá e ao redor de Jerusalém, bem como os que queimavam incenso a Baal, ao sol, à lua, aos planetas e a todo o exército dos céus. 6 Também tirou da Casa do Senhor o poste da deusa Aserá, que levou para fora de Jerusalém até o vale do Cedrom, onde o queimou e o reduziu a pó, que lançou sobre as sepulturas do povo simples. 7 Também destruiu as dependências dos prostitutos cultuais que estavam na Casa do Senhor, onde as mulheres teciam tendas para o poste da deusa Aserá. 8 Josias trouxe todos os sacerdotes das cidades de Judá e profanou os lugares altos em que os sacerdotes queimavam incenso, desde Geba até Berseba. Derrubou os altares das portas, que estavam à entrada do portão de Josué, governador da cidade, e que ficavam à esquerda de quem entrava por ela. 9 Os sacerdotes dos lugares altos não ofereciam sacrifícios sobre o altar do Senhor, em Jerusalém, mas comiam pães sem fermento no meio de seus irmãos. 10 Josias também profanou Tofete, que ficava no vale dos filhos de Hinom, para que ninguém queimasse o seu filho ou a sua filha como sacrifício a Moloque. 11 Também tirou os cavalos que os reis de Judá tinham dedicado ao sol, à entrada da Casa do Senhor, perto da câmara de Natã-Meleque, o camareiro, a qual ficava no átrio; e queimou os carros dedicados ao sol. 12 O rei também derrubou os altares que estavam sobre a sala de Acaz, sobre o terraço, altares que foram feitos pelos reis de Judá, bem como os altares que Manassés tinha construído nos dois átrios da Casa do Senhor. Ele os fez em pedaços, tirou dali e lançou o pó deles no ribeiro de Cedrom. 13 O rei profanou também os lugares altos que estavam a leste de Jerusalém, ao sul do monte da Destruição, os quais Salomão, rei de Israel, havia construído para Astarote, abominação dos sidônios, para Quemos, abominação dos moabitas, e para Milcom, abominação dos filhos de Amom. 14 Semelhantemente, fez em pedaços as colunas, cortou os postes da deusa Aserá e encheu de ossos humanos o lugar onde haviam estado.

15 Josias também derrubou o altar que estava em Betel e o lugar alto que Jeroboão, filho de Nebate, havia construído para levar Israel a pecar. Destruiu o lugar alto, reduziu a pó o seu altar e queimou o poste da deusa Aserá.

16 Quando Josias olhou ao seu redor, viu as sepulturas que estavam ali no monte; mandou tirar delas os ossos e os queimou sobre o altar. E assim ele profanou o altar, segundo a palavra do Senhor proclamada pelo homem de Deus que havia predito estas coisas. 17 Então o rei perguntou:

— Que monumento é este que estou vendo?

Os homens da cidade responderam:

— É a sepultura do homem de Deus que veio de Judá e proclamou estas coisas que o senhor acaba de fazer contra o altar de Betel.

18 Josias disse:

— Deixem-no estar; ninguém mexa nos ossos dele.

Assim, deixaram estar os seus ossos com os ossos do profeta que tinha vindo de Samaria.

19 Josias também tirou todos os santuários dos lugares altos que havia nas cidades de Samaria e que os reis de Israel tinham feito para provocarem o Senhor à ira; e fez com esses santuários o mesmo que havia feito em Betel. 20 E também matou todos os sacerdotes dos lugares altos que havia ali, sobre os altares, e queimou ossos humanos sobre eles. Depois voltou para Jerusalém.

21 O rei deu ordem a todo o povo, dizendo:

— Celebrem a Páscoa ao Senhor, o Deus de vocês, como está escrito neste Livro da Aliança.

22 Porque nunca se celebrou uma Páscoa como esta desde os dias dos juízes que julgaram Israel, nem durante os dias dos reis de Israel, nem nos dias dos reis de Judá. 23 Porém no décimo oitavo ano do reinado de Josias esta Páscoa foi celebrada ao Senhor, em Jerusalém.

24 Josias também eliminou os médiuns, os feiticeiros, os ídolos do lar, os ídolos e todas as abominações que se viam na terra de Judá e em Jerusalém, para cumprir as palavras da lei, que estavam escritas no livro que o sacerdote Hilquias havia achado na Casa do Senhor. 25 Antes dele, não houve rei que lhe fosse semelhante, que se convertesse ao Senhor de todo o seu coração, de toda a sua alma e com todas as suas forças, segundo toda a Lei de Moisés; e, depois dele, nunca se levantou outro igual.

26 No entanto, o Senhor não desistiu do furor da sua grande ira, ira que se acendeu contra Judá por causa de todas as provocações com que Manassés o tinha irritado. 27 O Senhor disse:

— Removerei da minha presença também Judá, como removi Israel, e rejeitarei Jerusalém, a cidade que escolhi, e o templo do qual eu disse: "O meu nome estará ali."

28 Quanto aos demais atos de Josias e a tudo o que fez, não está tudo escrito no Livro da História dos Reis de Judá? 29 Nos dias de Josias, Faraó Neco, rei do Egito, marchou em direção ao rio Eufrates, para ajudar o rei da Assíria. O rei Josias saiu para lutar contra ele, mas Faraó Neco o matou, em Megido, no primeiro encontro. 30 De Megido, os seus servos o levaram morto e, num carro, o transportaram para Jerusalém, onde o sepultaram no seu túmulo. O povo da terra tomou Joacaz, filho de Josias, e o ungiu, e o fez rei em lugar de seu pai.

31 Joacaz tinha vinte e três anos de idade quando começou a reinar e reinou três meses em Jerusalém. A mãe dele se chamava Hamutal e era filha de Jeremias, de Libna. 32 Joacaz fez o que era mau aos olhos do Senhor, segundo tudo o que os seus pais haviam feito. 33 Porém Faraó Neco mandou prendê-lo em Ribla, na terra de Hamate, para que não reinasse em Jerusalém; e impôs à terra um tributo de três mil e quatrocentos quilos de prata e trinta e quatro quilos de ouro. 34 Faraó Neco colocou Eliaquim, filho de Josias, como rei em lugar de Josias, seu pai, e mudou o nome dele para Jeoaquim. Mas levou Joacaz consigo para o Egito, onde ele morreu.

35 Jeoaquim entregou aquela prata e aquele ouro a Faraó. Mas, para dar esse dinheiro segundo a ordem de Faraó, Jeoaquim estabeleceu um imposto sobre a terra. Do povo da terra exigiu prata e ouro, de cada um segundo as suas posses, para o dar a Faraó Neco.

36 Jeoaquim tinha vinte e cinco anos de idade quando começou a reinar e reinou onze anos em Jerusalém. A mãe dele se chamava Zebida e era filha de Pedaías, de Ruma. 37 Jeoaquim fez o que era mau aos olhos do Senhor, segundo tudo o que os seus pais haviam feito.

1 Then the king sent,and there were gathered unto him, all the elders of Judah, and Jerusalem;

2 and the king went up to the house of Yahweh, and all the men of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem with him, and the priests, and the prophets, and all the people, both small and great,and he read in their ears, all the words of the book of the covenant, which had been found in the house of Yahweh.

3 And the king took his stand by the pillar, and solemnised a covenant before Yahwehto follow Yahweh, and to keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statutes, with all

4 Then the king commanded Hilkiah the high priest, and the priests of the second order, and the keepers of the entrance-hall, to bring forth, out of the temple of Yahweh, all the vessels that had been made for Baal and for the Sacred Stem, and for all the army of the heavens,and he burned them up outside Jerusalem, in the fields of Kidron, and carried the ashes of them to Bethel;

5 and he put down the idol-priests, whom the kings of Judah had appointed, so that incense might be burned in the high places, in the cities of Judah, and round about Jerusalem,them also that burned incense to Baal, to the sun, and to the moon, and to the constellations, and to all the army of the heavens;

6 and he brought forth the Sacred Stem out of the house of Yahweh, outside Jerusalem, into the Kidron ravine, and burned it in the Kidron ravine, and crushed it to powder,and cast the powder upon the graves of the sons of the people;

7 and he brake down the houses of the male devotees, which were in the house of Yahweh,where the women did weave houses to the Sacred Stem;

8 and be brought in all the priests out of the cities of Judah, and defiled the high places where, the priests, had burned incense, from Geba unto Beer-sheba,and brake down the high places of the gates, that were at the entrance of the gate of Joshua, the governor of the city, which were on ones left hand, in the gate of the city;

9 howbeit, the priests of the high places came not up unto the altar of Yahweh, in Jerusalem, save only that they did eat unleavened bread in the midst of their brethren;

10 and he defiled Topheth, which was in the valley of the son of Hinnom,so that no man might cause his son or his daughter to pass through the fire unto Molech;

11 and he did away with the horses, which the kings of Judah had devoted to the sun, at the entrance of the house of Yahweh, near the chamber of Nathan-melech the courtier, which was in the suburbs, also, the chariots of the sun, burned he with fire;

12 and, the altars which were on the roof of the upper chamber of Ahaz, which the kings of Judah had made, also the altars which Manasseh had made, in the two courts of the house of Yahweh, did the king break down,and hurried away from thence, and cast out the powder of them into the Kidron ravine;

13 and, the high places that were before Jerusalem, which were on the right hand of the mount of destruction, which Solomon king of Israel had built unto Ashtoreththe abomination of the Zidonians, and unto Chemoshthe abomination of the Moabites, and unto Milcomthe disgusting thing of the sons of Ammon, did the king defile;

14 and he brake in pieces the pillars, and cut down the Sacred Stems,and filled their place with human bones:

15 moreover also, the altar that was in Bethel, the high place which Jeroboam son of Nebat made, wherewith he caused, Israel, to sin,even that altar, and the high place, brake he down,and burned the high place, crushing it to powder, and burned a Sacred Stem.

16 And, when Josiah turned, and saw the graves which were there, in the mount, he sent and took the bones out of the graves, and burned upon the altar, and defiled it,according to the word of Yahweh, which the man of God proclaimed, who proclaimed these things.

17 Then said heWhat is yonder erection, which I do see? And the men of the city said unto himThe grave of the man of God, who came in out of Judah, and proclaimed these things, which thou hast done, concerning the altar of Bethel.

18 And he saidLet him rest, let, no man, disturb his bones. So they let his bones rest, with the bones of the prophet who came in out of Samaria.

19 Moreover also, all the houses of the high places which were in the cities of Samaria, which the kings of Israel had made, so as to provoke Yahweh to anger, did Josiah remove,and he did to them according to all the doings which he had done in Bethel;

20 and he sacrificed all the priests of the high places, who were there, by the altars, and burned human bones thereupon,and returned to Jerusalem.

21 Then did the king command all the people, saying, Keep ye a passover unto Yahweh, your God,such as is written in this book of the covenant.

22 Surely there had not been held such a passover as this, from the days of the Judges who judged Israel,nor all the days of the kings of Israel, and the kings of Judah;

23 save only, in the eighteenth year of King Josiah, when this passover was held unto Yahweh, in Jerusalem.

24 Moreover also, them who had familiar spirits, and the wizards, and the household gods, and the manufactured gods, and the abominations which were to be seen in the land of Judah, and in Jerusalem, did Josiah consume,that he might confirm the words of the law which were written in the book that Hilkiah the priest had found in the house of Yahweh.

25 And, like him, was no king, before him, who turned unto Yahweh with all his heart, and with all his soul, and with all his might, according to all the law of Moses,neither, after him, arose one, like him.

26 Howbeit, Yahweh turned not away from the glow of his great anger, wherewith his anger glowed against Judahbecause of all the provocations wherewith, Manasseh, had provoked him.

27 So Yahweh said: Even Judah, will I remove from my presence, as I have removed Israel,and will reject this city, which I had chosen, even Jerusalem, and the house as to which I had said, My Name, shall be, there.

28 Now, the rest of the story of Josiah, and all that he did, are, they, not written in the book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah?

29 In his days, came up Pharaoh-necoh king of Egypt, against the king of Assyria, unto the river Euphrates,and, when King Josiah went against him, he slew him at Megiddo, as soon as he saw him.

30 And his servants conveyed him in a chariot, dead, from Megiddo, and brought him to Jerusalem, and buried him in his own sepulchre,and the people of the land took Jehoahaz, son of Josiah, and anointed him, and made, him, king, in his fathers stead.

31 Twenty-three years old, was Jehoahaz when he began to reign, and, three months, reigned he in Jerusalem,and, his mothers name, was Hamutal daughter of Jeremiah, of Libnah.

32 And he did the thing that was wicked in the eyes of Yahweh, according to all that his, fathers, had done.

33 And Pharaoh-necoh put him in bonds at Riblah, in the hind of Hamath, that he might not reign in Jerusalem,and he laid a fine upon the land, a hundred talents of silver, and a talent of gold.

34 And Pharaoh-necoh made Eliakim son of Josiah king, instead of Josiah his father, and turned his name to Jehoiakim,and, Jehoahaz, took he away, so he entered Egypt, and died there.

35 And, the silver and the gold, did Jehoiakim give unto Pharaoh, howbeit he assessed the land, that he might give the silver at the bidding of Pharaoh,every man, according to his assessment, exacted the silver and the gold of the people of the land, that he might give it to Pharaoh-necoh.

36 Twenty-five years old, was Jehoiakim when he began to reign, and, eleven years, reigned he in Jerusalem,and, his mothers name, was Zebudah daughter of Pedaiah, of Rumah.

37 And he did the thing that was wicked in the eyes of Yahweh,according to all that, his fathers, had done.
