1 My people, hear my teaching; listen to the words of my mouth.2 I will open my mouth with a parable; I will utter hidden things, things from of old —3 things we have heard and known, things our ancestors have told us.4 We will not hide them from their descendants; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD, his power, and the wonders he has done.5 He decreed statutes for Jacob and established the law in Israel, which he commanded our ancestors to teach their children,6 so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children.7 Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds but would keep his commands.8 They would not be like their ancestors — a stubborn and rebellious generation, whose hearts were not loyal to God, whose spirits were not faithful to him.9 The men of Ephraim, though armed with bows, turned back on the day of battle;10 they did not keep God's covenant and refused to live by his law.11 They forgot what he had done, the wonders he had shown them.12 He did miracles in the sight of their ancestors in the land of Egypt, in the region of Zoan.13 He divided the sea and led them through; he made the water stand up like a wall.14 He guided them with the cloud by day and with light from the fire all night.15 He split the rocks in the wilderness and gave them water as abundant as the seas;16 he brought streams out of a rocky crag and made water flow down like rivers.17 But they continued to sin against him, rebelling in the wilderness against the Most High.18 They willfully put God to the test by demanding the food they craved.19 They spoke against God; they said, "Can God really spread a table in the wilderness?20 True, he struck the rock, and water gushed out, streams flowed abundantly, but can he also give us bread? Can he supply meat for his people?"21 When the LORD heard them, he was furious; his fire broke out against Jacob, and his wrath rose against Israel,22 for they did not believe in God or trust in his deliverance.23 Yet he gave a command to the skies above and opened the doors of the heavens;24 he rained down manna for the people to eat, he gave them the grain of heaven.25 Human beings ate the bread of angels; he sent them all the food they could eat.26 He let loose the east wind from the heavens and by his power made the south wind blow.27 He rained meat down on them like dust, birds like sand on the seashore.28 He made them come down inside their camp, all around their tents.29 They ate till they were gorged — he had given them what they craved.30 But before they turned from what they craved, even while the food was still in their mouths,31 God's anger rose against them; he put to death the sturdiest among them, cutting down the young men of Israel.32 In spite of all this, they kept on sinning; in spite of his wonders, they did not believe.33 So he ended their days in futility and their years in terror.34 Whenever God slew them, they would seek him; they eagerly turned to him again.35 They remembered that God was their Rock, that God Most High was their Redeemer.36 But then they would flatter him with their mouths, lying to him with their tongues;37 their hearts were not loyal to him, they were not faithful to his covenant.38 Yet he was merciful; he forgave their iniquities and did not destroy them. Time after time he restrained his anger and did not stir up his full wrath.39 He remembered that they were but flesh, a passing breeze that does not return.40 How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness and grieved him in the wasteland!41 Again and again they put God to the test; they vexed the Holy One of Israel.42 They did not remember his power — the day he redeemed them from the oppressor,43 the day he displayed his signs in Egypt, his wonders in the region of Zoan.44 He turned their river into blood; they could not drink from their streams.45 He sent swarms of flies that devoured them, and frogs that devastated them.46 He gave their crops to the grasshopper, their produce to the locust.47 He destroyed their vines with hail and their sycamore-figs with sleet.48 He gave over their cattle to the hail, their livestock to bolts of lightning.49 He unleashed against them his hot anger, his wrath, indignation and hostility — a band of destroying angels.50 He prepared a path for his anger; he did not spare them from death but gave them over to the plague.51 He struck down all the firstborn of Egypt, the firstfruits of manhood in the tents of Ham.52 But he brought his people out like a flock; he led them like sheep through the wilderness.53 He guided them safely, so they were unafraid; but the sea engulfed their enemies.54 And so he brought them to the border of his holy land, to the hill country his right hand had taken.55 He drove out nations before them and allotted their lands to them as an inheritance; he settled the tribes of Israel in their homes.56 But they put God to the test and rebelled against the Most High; they did not keep his statutes.57 Like their ancestors they were disloyal and faithless, as unreliable as a faulty bow.58 They angered him with their high places; they aroused his jealousy with their idols.59 When God heard them, he was furious; he rejected Israel completely.60 He abandoned the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent he had set up among humans.61 He sent the ark of his might into captivity, his splendor into the hands of the enemy.62 He gave his people over to the sword; he was furious with his inheritance.63 Fire consumed their young men, and their young women had no wedding songs;64 their priests were put to the sword, and their widows could not weep.65 Then the Lord awoke as from sleep, as a warrior wakes from the stupor of wine.66 He beat back his enemies; he put them to everlasting shame.67 Then he rejected the tents of Joseph, he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim;68 but he chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion, which he loved.69 He built his sanctuary like the heights, like the earth that he established forever.70 He chose David his servant and took him from the sheep pens;71 from tending the sheep he brought him to be the shepherd of his people Jacob, of Israel his inheritance.72 And David shepherded them with integrity of heart; with skillful hands he led them.

1 Hỡi dân sự ta, hãy lắng tai nghe luật pháp ta; Hãy nghiêng tai qua nghe lời của miệng ta.2 Ta sẽ mở miệng ra nói thí dụ, Bày ra những câu đố của đời xưa,3 Mà chúng ta đã nghe biết, Và tổ phụ chúng ta đã thuật lại cho chúng ta.4 Chúng ta sẽ chẳng giấu các điều ấy cùng con cháu họ, Bèn sẽ thuật lại cho dòng dõi hậu lai những sự ngợi khen Đức Giê-hô-va, Quyền năng Ngài, và công việc lạ lùng mà Ngài đã làm.5 Ngài đã lập chứng cớ nơi Gia-cốp, Định luật pháp trong Y-sơ-ra-ên, Truyền dặn tổ phụ chúng ta phải dạy nó lại cho con cháu mình;6 Hầu cho dòng dõi hậu lai, tức là con cái sẽ sanh, Được biết những điều đó, Rồi phiên chúng nó truyền lại cho con cháu mình;7 Hầu cho chúng nó để lòng trông cậy nơi Đức Chúa Trời, Không hề quên các công việc Ngài, Song gìn giữ các điều răn của Ngài,8 Để chúng nó chẳng như tổ phụ mình, Chẳng dọn lòng cho chánh-đáng, Có tâm thần không trung tín cùng Đức Chúa Trời.9 Con cháu Ep-ra-im cầm binh khí và giương cung, Có xây lưng lại trong ngày chiến trận.10 Chúng nó không gìn giữ giao ước của Đức Chúa Trời, Cũng không chịu đi theo luật pháp Ngài,11 Quên những việc làm của Ngài, Và các công tác lạ lùng mà Ngài đã tỏ cho chúng nó thấy.12 Tại trong xứ Ê-díp-tô, nơi đồng bằng Xô-an, Ngài làm những phép lạ trước mặt tổ phụ chúng nó.13 Ngài rẽ biển ra, làm cho họ đi ngang qua, Khiến nước dựng lên như một đống.14 Ngài dẫn dắt họ, ban ngày bằng áng mây, Trọn đêm bằng ánh sáng lửa.15 Ngài bửa hòn đá ra trong đồng vắng, Ban cho họ uống nước nhiều như từ vực sâu ra.16 Ngài cũng khiến suối từ hòn đá phun ra, Và làm cho nước chảy ra như sông.17 Dầu vậy, họ cứ phạm tội của Ngài, Phản nghịch cùng Đấng Chí cao trong đồng vắng.18 Trong lòng họ thử Đức Chúa Trời, Mà cầu xin đồ ăn theo tình dục mình.19 Họ nói nghịch cùng Đức Chúa Trời, Mà rằng: Đức Chúa Trời há có thể dọn bàn nơi đồng vắng sao?20 Kìa, Ngài đã đập hòn đá, nước bèn phun ra, Dòng chảy tràn; Ngài há cũng có thể ban bánh sao? Ngài há sẽ sắm sửa thịt cho dân Ngài ư?21 Vì vậy Đức Giê-hô-va có nghe bèn nổi giận; Có lửa cháy nghịch cùng Gia-cốp, Sự giận nổi lên cùng Y-sơ-ra-ên;22 Bởi vì chúng nó không tin Đức Chúa Trời, Cùng chẳng nhờ cậy sự cứu rỗi của Ngài.23 Dầu vậy, Ngài khiến các từng mây trên cao, Và mở các cửa trên trời,24 Cho mưa ma-na xuống trên họ đặng ăn, Và ban cho lúa mì từ trên trời.25 Người ta ăn bánh của kẻ mạnh dạn; Ngài gởi cho họ đồ ăn danh dự.26 Ngài khiến gió đông thổi trên trời, Nhờ quyền năng mình Ngài dẫn gió nam.27 Ngài khiến mưa thịt trên chúng nó như bụi tro, Và chim có cánh cũng nhiều như cát biển;28 Ngài làm các vật đó sa xuống giữa trại quân, Khắp xung quanh nơi ở chúng nó.29 Như vậy chúng nó ăn, được no nê chán lán, Ngài ban cho chúng nó điều chúng nó ước ao.30 Chúng nó chưa xây khỏi điều mình ước ao, Vật thực hãy còn trong miệng chúng nó,31 Bèn có cơn giận của Đức Chúa Trời nổi lên cùng chúng nó, Giết những kẻ béo hơn hết, Đánh hạ những người trai trẻ của Y-sơ-ra-ên.32 Mặc dầu các sự ấy, chúng nó còn phạm tội, Không tin các công việc lạ lùng của Ngài.33 Vì cớ ấy Ngài làm cho các ngày chúng nó tan ra hư không, Dùng sự kinh khiếp làm tiêu các năm chúng nó.34 Khi Ngài đánh giết chúng nó, chúng nó bèn cầu hỏi Ngài, Trở lại tìm cầu Đức Chúa Trời cách sốt sắng.35 Chúng nó bèn nhớ lại rằng Đức Chúa Trời là hòn đá của mình, Đức Chúa Trời Chí cao là Đấng cứu chuộc mình.36 Nhưng chúng nó lấy miệng dua nịnh Ngài, Dùng lưỡi mình nói dối với Ngài.37 Vì lòng chúng nó chẳng khắn khít cùng Ngài, Chúng nó cũng không trung tín trong sự giao ước Ngài.38 Nhưng Ngài, vì lòng thương xót, tha tội ác cho, chẳng hủy diệt chúng nó: Thật, nhiều khi Ngài xây cơn giận Ngài khỏi, chẳng nổi giận đến cực kỳ.39 Ngài nhớ lại chúng nó chẳng qua là xác thịt, Một hơi thở qua, rồi không trở lại.40 Biết mấy lần chúng nó phản nghịch cùng Ngài nơi đồng vắng, Và làm phiền Ngài trong chỗ vắng vẻ!41 Chúng nó lại thử Đức Chúa Trời, Trêu chọc Đấng thánh của Y-sơ-ra-ên.42 Chúng nó không nhớ lại tay của Ngài, Hoặc ngày Ngài giải cứu chúng nó khỏi kẻ hà hiếp;43 Thể nào Ngài đặt các dấu lạ mình tại Ê-díp-tô, Và những phép kỳ mình trong đồng Xô-an;44 Đổi ra huyết các sông Và các dòng nước chúng nó, đến đỗi không thế uống được.45 Ngài sai muỗi cắn nuốt họ, Và ếch làm hại chúng nó;46 Cũng phó hoa lợi chúng nó cho châu chấu, Nộp bông trái công lao họ cho cào cào.47 Ngài phá vườn nho chúng nó bằng mưa đá, Hủy cây sung họ bằng tuyết giá;48 Cũng phó trâu bò chúng nó cho mưa đá, Và nộp bầy chiên họ cho sấm sét.49 Ngài thả nghịch chúng nó cơn giận dữ Ngài, Sự thạnh nộ, sự nóng nả, và gian truân, Tức là một lũ sứ tai họa.50 Ngài mở lối cho cơn giận Ngài, Chẳng dong thứ linh hồn họ khỏi chết, Bèn phó mạng sống chúng nó cho dịch hạch;51 Cũng đánh giết mọi con đầu lòng trong Ê-díp-tô, Tức là cường-tráng sanh đầu ở trong các trại Cham.52 Đoạn Ngài đem dân sự Ngài ra như con chiên. Dẫn dắt họ trong đồng vắng như một bầy chiên.53 Ngài dẫn chúng nó bình an vô sự, chúng nó chẳng sợ chi: Còn biển lấp lại những kẻ thù nghịch họ.54 Ngài đưa họ đến bờ cõi thánh Ngài, Tức đến núi mà tay hữu Ngài đã được.55 Ngài cũng đuổi các dân khỏi trước mặt chúng nó, Bắt thăm và chia xứ làm sản nghiệp cho họ, Khiến các chi phái Y-sơ-ra-ên ở trong trại của các dân ấy.56 Dầu vậy, chúng nó thử và phản nghịch Đức Chúa Trời Chí cao, Không giữ các chứng cớ của Ngài;57 Nhưng trở lòng, ở bất trung như các tổ phụ mình: Chúng nó sịa như cây cung sai lệch.58 Nhơn vì các nơi cao, chúng nó chọc giận Ngài, Giục Ngài phân bì tại vì những tượng chạm.59 Khi Đức Chúa Trời nghe điều ấy, bèn nổi giận, Gớm ghiếc Y-sơ-ra-ên quá đỗi;60 Đến nỗi bỏ đền tạm tại Si-lô, Tức là trại Ngài đã dựng giữa loài người;61 Phó sức lực Ngài bị dẫn tù, Và nộp vinh hiển Ngài vào tay cừu địch.62 Ngài cũng phó dân sự Ngài cho bị thanh gươm, Và nổi giận cùng cơ nghiệp mình.63 Lửa thiêu nuốt những gã trai trẻ họ, Còn các nữ đồng trinh không có ai hát nghinh thú.64 Những thầy tế lễ họ bị gươm sa ngã, Song các người góa bụa không than khóc.65 Bấy giờ Chúa tỉnh thức như người khỏi giấc ngủ, Khác nào kẻ mạnh dạn reo la vì cớ rượu.66 Ngài hãm đánh những kẻ cừu địch lui lại, Làm cho chúng nó bị sỉ nhục đời đời.67 Vả lại, Ngài từ chối trại Giô-sép, Cũng chẳng chọn chi phái Ep-ra-im;68 Bèn chọn chi phái Giu-đa, Là núi Si-ôn mà Ngài yêu mến.69 Ngài xây đền thánh Ngài giống như nơi rất cao, Khác nào trái đất mà Ngài đã sáng lập đời đời.70 Ngài cũng chọn Đa-vít là tôi tớ Ngài, Bắt người từ các chuồng chiên:71 Ngài đem người khỏi bên các chiên cho bú, Đặng người chăn giữ Gia-cốp, là dân sự Ngài, Và Y-sơ-ra-ên, là cơ nghiệp Ngài.72 Như vậy, người chăn giữ họ theo sự thanh liêm lòng người, Và lấy sự khôn khéo tay mình mà dẫn dắt họ.
