1 De acordo com a sua promessa, o Senhor Deus abençoou Sara. 2 Ela ficou grávida e, na velhice de Abraão, lhe deu um filho. O menino nasceu no tempo que Deus havia marcado, 3 e Abraão pôs nele o nome de Isaque. 4 Quando Isaque tinha oito dias, Abraão o circuncidou, como Deus havia mandado. 5 Quando Isaque nasceu, Abraão tinha cem anos. 6 Então Sara disse:

— Deus me deu motivo para rir . E todos os que ouvirem essa história vão rir comigo.

7 E disse também:

— Quem diria a Abraão que Sara daria de mamar? No entanto, apesar de ele estar velho, eu lhe dei um filho.

8 O menino cresceu e foi desmamado. E, no dia em que o menino foi desmamado, Abraão deu uma grande festa.

9 Certo dia Ismael, o filho de Abraão e da egípcia Agar, estava brincando com Isaque, o filho de Sara. 10 Quando Sara viu isso, disse a Abraão:

— Mande embora essa escrava e o filho dela, pois o filho dessa escrava não será herdeiro junto com Isaque, o meu filho.

11 Abraão ficou muito preocupado com isso, pois Ismael também era seu filho. 12 Mas Deus disse:

— Abraão, não se preocupe com o menino, nem com a sua escrava. Faça tudo o que Sara disser, pois você terá descendentes por meio de Isaque. 13 O filho da escrava é seu filho também, e por isso farei com que os descendentes dele sejam uma grande nação.

14 No dia seguinte Abraão se levantou de madrugada e deu para Agar comida e um odre cheio de água. Pôs o menino nos ombros dela e mandou que fosse embora. E Agar foi embora, andando sem direção pelo deserto de Berseba. 15 Quando acabou a água do odre, ela deixou o menino debaixo de uma arvorezinha 16 e foi sentar-se a uns cem metros dali. Ela estava pensando: "Não suporto ver o meu filho morrer." Ela ficou ali sentada, e o menino começou a chorar.

17 Deus ouviu o choro do menino; e, lá do céu, o Anjo de Deus chamou Agar e disse:

— Por que é que você está preocupada, Agar? Não tenha medo, pois Deus ouviu o choro do menino aí onde ele está. 18 Vamos! Levante o menino e pegue-o pela mão. Eu farei dos seus descendentes uma grande nação.

19 Então Deus abriu os olhos de Agar, e ela viu um poço. Ela foi, encheu o odre de água e deu para Ismael beber.

20 Protegido por Deus, o menino cresceu. Ismael ficou morando no deserto de Parã e se tornou um bom atirador de flechas. 21 E a sua mãe arranjou uma mulher egípcia para ele.

22 Por esse tempo Abimeleque foi conversar com Abraão. Ficol, comandante do seu exército, foi com ele. Abimeleque disse a Abraão:

— Deus está com você em tudo o que você faz. 23 Portanto, aqui neste lugar, jure por Deus que não vai enganar nem a mim, nem aos meus filhos, nem aos meus descendentes. Eu tenho sido sincero com você; por isso prometa que será sincero comigo e fiel a esta terra em que está morando.

24 — Eu juro — disse Abraão.

25 Abraão fez uma reclamação a Abimeleque por causa de um poço que os empregados de Abimeleque haviam tomado à força.

26 Abimeleque explicou:

— Não sei quem fez isso. Você nunca me falou nada, e esta é a primeira vez que estou ouvindo falar desse assunto.

27 Aí Abraão pegou algumas ovelhas e alguns bois e deu a Abimeleque, e os dois fizeram um trato. 28 Abraão separou sete ovelhinhas do seu rebanho, 29 e Abimeleque perguntou:

— Por que você separou estas sete ovelhinhas?

30 Abraão respondeu:

— Elas são um presente para você. Ao receber estas sete ovelhinhas, você estará concordando que fui eu quem cavou este poço.

31 Por isso aquele lugar ficou sendo chamado de Berseba , pois ali os dois fizeram um juramento.

32 Depois de fazerem esse trato em Berseba, Abimeleque e Ficol voltaram para a Filisteia. 33 Abraão plantou uma árvore em Berseba e ali adorou o Senhor, o Deus Eterno. 34 E Abraão ficou morando muito tempo na Filisteia.

1 Now, Yahweh, visited Sarah, as he had said,And Yahweh did for Sarah as he had spoken.

2 So, Sarah, conceived and bare, to Abraham, a son, for his old age, at the set time, of which God had spoken with him.

3 And Abraham called the name of his son that was born to him, whom, Sarah, bare to him, Isaac.

4 And Abraham circumcised Isaac his son, when eight days old,as God commanded him.

5 Now Abraham was a hundred years old,when Isaac his son was born to him.

6 And Sarah said, A laughing, hath God made for me,Everyone that heareth will laugh with me.

7 And she saidWho would have announced to Abraham, Sarah hath suckled children? yet have I borne a son, for his old age!

8 And the child grew, and was weaned,and Abraham made a great banquet, on the day of the weaning of Isaac.

9 And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian woman whom she had borne to Abraham laughing!

10 So she said to Abraham, Cast out this bondwoman and her son,for the son of this bondwoman must not inherit with my son with Isaac.

11 And the word was very grievous in the eyes of Abraham,on account of his son.

12 And God said unto Abraham Let it not be grievous in thine eyes concerning the boy and concerning thy bondwoman, In all that Sarah may say unto thee, hearken to her voice,For in Isaac, shall there be called to theea seed.

13 Yet even the son of the bondwoman, will I appoint to become, a nation, because thy seed, he is.

14 So Abraham rose up early in the morningand took bread and a skin of water and gave unto hagar,putting them on her shoulder and the child, and sent her forth,so she went her way and wandered, in the desert of Beer-sheba.

15 And the water out of the skin was spent,so she cant the child under one of the shrubs;

16 and went and sat her down over against him at a distance like as of such as draw the bow, for she said Let me not look upon the death of the child,So she sat down over against him, and the boy lifted up his voice, and wept

17 And God heard the voice of the boy, and a messenger of God called unto Hagar out of the heavens; and said to her, What aileth thee, Hagar? Do not fear, for God hath hearkened unto the voice of the boy where he is.

18 Arise lift up the boy, and hold him up with thy hand,for, a great nation, will I make him.

19 And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water,and went and filled the skin with water, and gave drink unto the boy

20 And it came to pass that God was with the boy, and he grew,and dwelt in the desert, and he became as he grew up, an archer,

21 And he dwelt in the desert of Paran,and his mother took him a wife out of the land of Egypt.

22 And it came to pass at that time, that Abimelech, with Phicol chieftain of his host, spake unto Abraham, saying,God, is with thee in all that, thou art doing.

23 Now, therefore, swear to me by God, here, that thou wilt not deal falsely by me, nor by mine offspring, nor by my descendants,according to the lovingkindness wherewith I have dealt with thee, shalt thou deal with me, and with the land wherein thou hast sojourned.

24 And Abraham said, I, will swear.

25 But Abraham reproved Abimelech,on account of the well of water, which the servants of Abimelech had seized.

26 And Abimelech said, I know not, who hath done this thing,nor hast even thou, ever told me, nor have even I, ever heard, save to-day.

27 And Abraham took sheep and oxen, stud gave to Abimelech,and they two solemnised a covenant

28 So then Abram set seven young sheep of the flock by them-selves,

29 And Abimelech said unto Abraham, What, then mean these seven young sheep here, which thou hast set by themselves?

30 And he said, The seven young sheep, shalt thou take at my hand,that they may serve as my witness, that I digged this well.

31 On this account, was the name of that place called Beer-sheba,because there, had they two sworn. \fs15

32 And when they had solemnised a covenant in Beer-sheba,then arose Abimelech, with Phicol chief of his host, and returned unto the land of the Philistines.

33 Then planted he a tamarisk tree in Beer-sheba,and called there on the name of Yahweh the age-abiding GOD.

34 So Abraham sojourned in the land of the Philistines many days.
