1 Quando Jacó viu que Esaú vinha chegando com os seus quatrocentos homens, dividiu os seus filhos em grupos, que ficaram com Leia, com Raquel e com as duas escravas. 2 As escravas e os seus filhos ficaram na frente, depois Leia com os seus filhos e por último Raquel e José. 3 Depois Jacó passou e ficou na frente; sete vezes ele se ajoelhou e encostou o rosto no chão, até que chegou perto de Esaú. 4 Porém Esaú saiu correndo ao encontro de Jacó e o abraçou; ele pôs os braços em volta do seu pescoço e o beijou. E os dois choraram. 5 Quando Esaú olhou em volta e viu as mulheres e as crianças, perguntou:

— Quem são esses que estão com você?

— São os filhos que Deus, na sua bondade, deu a este seu criado — respondeu Jacó.

6 Então as escravas e os seus filhos chegaram perto de Esaú e se curvaram na frente dele. 7 Depois vieram Leia e os seus filhos e também se curvaram. Por último José e Raquel vieram e se curvaram.

8 Depois Esaú perguntou:

— E o que são aqueles grupos que encontrei pelo caminho?

Jacó respondeu:

— Por meio deles pensei em ganhar a boa vontade do senhor.

9 Aí Esaú disse:

— Eu já tenho bastante, meu irmão; fique com o que é seu.

10 Mas Jacó insistiu:

— Não recuse. Se é que mereço um favor seu, aceite o meu presente. Para mim, ver o seu rosto é como ver o rosto de Deus, pois o senhor me recebeu tão bem. 11 Por favor, aceite este presente que eu trouxe para o senhor. Deus tem sido bom para mim e me tem dado tudo o que preciso.

E Jacó insistiu até que Esaú aceitou.

12 Então Esaú disse:

— Bem, vamos embora; eu vou na frente.

13 Jacó respondeu:

— Meu patrão, o senhor sabe que as crianças são fracas, e eu tenho de pensar nas ovelhas e vacas com crias. Se forem forçados a andar depressa demais, nem que seja por um dia só, todos os animais poderão morrer. 14 É melhor que o meu patrão vá na frente deste seu criado. Eu vou atrás devagar, conforme o passo dos animais e dos meninos, até que chegue a Edom, onde o senhor mora.

15 Esaú disse:

— Então deixe que alguns dos meus empregados fiquem com você para acompanhá-lo.

Jacó respondeu:

— Não é preciso. Eu só quero conquistar a amizade do meu patrão.

16 Naquele dia Esaú voltou pelo mesmo caminho para a região de Edom. 17 Jacó, por sua vez, foi para Sucote. Ali construiu uma casa para si e abrigos para o gado. Por isso puseram naquele lugar o nome de Sucote .

18 Assim, Jacó voltou da Mesopotâmia para Canaã; ele chegou são e salvo à cidade de Siquém e armou o seu acampamento ali perto. 19 Por cem barras de prata comprou terras dos filhos de Hamor, o pai de Siquém, e nelas armou o seu acampamento. 20 Ali ele construiu um altar e pôs nele o nome de El, o Deus de Israel.

1 Then Jacob lifted up his eyes and looked, and lo! Esau, coming in,and with him, four hundred men. So he divided the childrenunto Leah and unto Rachel, and unto the two handmaids;

2 and put the handmaids and their children first,and Leah and her children next, and Rachel and Joseph next;

3 but he himself, passed over before them, and bowed himself to the earth seven times, until he had come near unto his brother.

4 Then ran Esau to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck,and they wept.

5 Then lifted he up his eyes, and beheld the women and the children, and said What are these to thee? And he saidThe children wherewith God hath favoured thy servant,

6 Then came near the handmaids, theyand their children,and bowed themselves.

7 Then came near Leah also with her children,and they bowed themselves. And afterwards, came near Joseph with Rachel, and they bowed themselves,

8 Then said he, What to thee is all this camp, which I have fallen in with? And he said,To find favour in the eyes of my lord.

9 Then said Esau, I have an abundance,my brother, be thine what thou hast!

10 Then said Jacob, Nay, I pray thee, if, I pray thee, have found favour in thine eyes, then thou wilt take my present at my hand,For on this account, hath my seeing thy face been like seeing the face of God in that thou wast well-pleased with me.

11 Take, I pray thee my blessing which hath been brought in to thee, because God hath shewed me favour and because I have everything. So he was urgent with him and he took it.

12 Then he said, Let us break up and go, and let me go on before thee.

13 And he said unto him, My lord, is taking note, that, the children are tender,and the flocks and the herds are giving suck with me,and, should I overdrive them a single day, then would all the flocks die.

14 Let my lord, I pray thee pass over before his servant, and let, me, lead on in my own easy way, at the pace of the cattle that are before me, and at the pace of the children, until that I come in unto my lord, towards Seir.

15 Then said Esau: Let me leave, I pray thee, along with thee, some of the people who are with me! And he saidWhy so? let me find favour in the eyes of my lord!

16 So Esau returned, that day, to his journey towards Mount Seir.

17 But, Jacob, brake up towards Succoth, and built for himself a house, for his cattle, made he places of shelter, for which cause, the name of the place was called, Succoth.

18 And Jacob came in peace to the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan,when he came in from Padan-aram,and he encamped before the city.

19 And he bought the portion of the field where he had spread out his tent, at the hand of the sons of Hamor, father of Shechem,for a hundred kesitahs.

20 And he set up there an altar,and called it, El-elohe-Israel.
