1 Então toda a comunidade começou a chorar em voz alta e continuou em prantos a noite toda. 2 Suas vozes se elevaram em grande protesto contra Moisés e Arão. "Ah, se ao menos tivéssemos morrido no Egito, ou mesmo aqui no deserto!", diziam. 3 "Por que o Senhor está nos levando para essa terra só para morrermos em combate? Nossas esposas e crianças serão capturadas como prisioneiros de guerra! Não seria melhor voltarmos para o Egito?" 4 E disseram uns aos outros: "Vamos escolher um novo líder e voltar para o Egito!".

5 Moisés e Arão se curvaram com o rosto em terra diante de toda a comunidade de Israel. 6 Dois dos homens que tinham feito o reconhecimento da terra, Josué, filho de Num, e Calebe, filho de Jefoné, rasgaram suas roupas 7 e disseram a toda a comunidade de Israel: "A terra da qual fizemos o reconhecimento é muito boa! 8 E, se o Senhor se agradar de nós, ele nos levará em segurança até ela e a dará a nós. É uma terra que produz leite e mel com fartura. 9 Não se rebelem contra o Senhor e não tenham medo dos povos da terra. Diante de nós, eles estão indefesos! Não têm quem os proteja, mas o Senhor está conosco! Não tenham medo deles!".

10 Ainda assim, toda a comunidade começou a falar em apedrejar Josué e Calebe. Então a presença gloriosa do Senhor apareceu na tenda do encontro a todos os israelitas, 11 e o Senhor disse a Moisés: "Até quando este povo me tratará com desprezo? Será que nunca confiarão em mim, mesmo depois de todos os sinais que realizei entre eles? 12 Eu os deserdarei e os destruirei com uma praga. Então, farei de você um povo ainda maior e mais poderoso que eles!".

13 Moisés, porém, respondeu ao Senhor: "O que os egípcios pensarão? Eles sabem muito bem do poder que mostraste ao resgatar o teu povo do meio deles. 14 Os egípcios informarão isso aos habitantes dessa terra, que já ouviram falar que vives entre o teu povo. Sabem, Senhor, que apareces ao teu povo face a face e que a tua nuvem permanece sobre ele e que vais adiante dele na coluna de nuvem de dia e na coluna de fogo à noite. 15 Se exterminares todo este povo com um só golpe, as nações que ouviram falar de tua fama dirão: 16 ‘O Senhor não foi capaz de levá-los à terra que jurou lhes dar, por isso os matou no deserto’.

17 "Por favor, Senhor, mostra que o teu poder é tão grande quanto declaraste. Pois disseste: 18 ‘O Senhor é lento para se irar, é cheio de amor e perdoa todo tipo de pecado e rebeldia. Contudo, não absolve o culpado; traz as consequências do pecado dos pais sobre os filhos até a terceira e quarta geração’. 19 De acordo com o teu grande amor, peço que perdoes os pecados deste povo, como os tens perdoado desde que saíram do Egito".

20 Então o Senhor disse: "Eu os perdoarei, como você me pediu. 21 Mas, tão certo quanto eu vivo e tão certo quanto a terra está cheia da glória do Senhor, 22 nenhuma dessas pessoas entrará na terra. Todas elas viram a minha presença gloriosa e os sinais que realizei no Egito e no deserto. Repetidamente, porém, me puseram à prova, recusando-se a ouvir a minha voz. 23 Jamais verão a terra que jurei dar a seus antepassados. Nenhum daqueles que me trataram com desprezo a verá. 24 Meu servo Calebe, no entanto, teve uma atitude diferente dos demais. Permaneceu fiel a mim, por isso eu o farei entrar na terra da qual fez o reconhecimento, e seus descendentes tomarão posse dela. 25 Agora, deem meia-volta e não sigam rumo à terra onde habitam os amalequitas e cananeus. Amanhã partirão para o deserto, em direção ao mar Vermelho".

26 Então o Senhor disse a Moisés e a Arão: 27 "Até quando precisarei tolerar esta comunidade perversa e suas queixas contra mim? Sim, ouvi as queixas dos israelitas contra mim. 28 Agora, digam-lhes o seguinte: ‘Tão certo quanto eu vivo, declara o Senhor, farei com vocês exatamente aquilo que os ouvi dizerem. 29 Todos vocês cairão mortos neste deserto! Uma vez que se queixaram contra mim, todos com mais de 20 anos que foram contados no censo morrerão. 30 Não entrarão nem tomarão posse da terra que eu jurei lhes dar, para que nela morassem. As únicas exceções serão Calebe, filho de Jefoné, e Josué, filho de Num.

31 "‘Vocês disseram que seus filhos seriam tomados como prisioneiros de guerra. Pois bem, eu os farei entrar na terra em segurança, e eles desfrutarão daquilo que vocês desprezaram. 32 Mas, quanto a vocês, cairão mortos neste deserto. 33 Seus filhos serão como pastores, andando sem rumo pelo deserto durante quarenta anos. Desse modo, sofrerão a consequência de sua infidelidade, até que o último de vocês morra no deserto.

34 "‘Uma vez que seus espiões passaram quarenta dias fazendo o reconhecimento da terra, vocês andarão sem rumo pelo deserto durante quarenta anos, um ano para cada dia, como punição por sua culpa. Assim, saberão o resultado de se opor a mim’. 35 Eu, o Senhor, falei! Certamente farei essas coisas a todos os membros da comunidade que conspiraram contra mim. Serão destruídos neste deserto, e aqui morrerão!".

36 Os homens que Moisés tinha enviado para fazer o reconhecimento da terra, aqueles que instigaram a rebelião contra ele com seu relatório negativo, 37 morreram repentinamente de uma praga diante do Senhor. 38 Dos homens que haviam feito o reconhecimento da terra, apenas Josué e Calebe sobreviveram.

39 Quando Moisés transmitiu essas palavras aos israelitas, eles se encheram de tristeza. 40 No dia seguinte, levantaram-se cedo e subiram em direção ao alto dos montes. "Vamos!", disseram. "Reconhecemos que pecamos, mas agora estamos prontos para entrar na terra que o Senhor nos prometeu."

41 Moisés, porém, disse: "Por que desobedecem à ordem do Senhor? Isso não dará certo! 42 Não subam para a terra agora, pois o Senhor não estará com vocês. Seus inimigos os aniquilarão! 43 Quando enfrentarem os amalequitas e cananeus na batalha, serão massacrados. Porque vocês abandonaram o Senhor, ele os abandonará".

44 Arrogantemente, os israelitas avançaram até o alto dos montes, apesar de Moisés e a arca da aliança do Senhor terem ficado no acampamento. 45 Então os amalequitas e cananeus que viviam naqueles montes desceram, derrotaram os israelitas e os perseguiram até Hormá.

1 All the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night. 2 All the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron. The whole congregation said to them, "We wish that we had died in the land of Egypt, or that we had died in this wilderness! 3 Why does Yahweh bring us to this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will be captured or killed! Wouldn’t it be better for us to return into Egypt?" 4 They said to one another, "Let’s choose a leader, and let’s return into Egypt."

5 Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.

6 Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were of those who spied out the land, tore their clothes. 7 They spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying, "The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceedingly good land. 8 If Yahweh delights in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it to us: a land which flows with milk and honey. 9 Only don’t rebel against Yahweh, neither fear the people of the land; for they are bread for us. Their defense is removed from over them, and Yahweh is with us. Don’t fear them."

10 But all the congregation threatened to stone them with stones.

Yahweh’s glory appeared in the Tent of Meeting to all the children of Israel. 11 Yahweh said to Moses, "How long will this people despise me? How long will they not believe in me, for all the signs which I have worked among them? 12 I will strike them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they."

13 Moses said to Yahweh, "Then the Egyptians will hear it; for you brought up this people in your might from among them. 14 They will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that you Yahweh are among this people; for you Yahweh are seen face to face, and your cloud stands over them, and you go before them, in a pillar of cloud by day, and in a pillar of fire by night. 15 Now if you killed this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of you will speak, saying, 16 ‘Because Yahweh was not able to bring this people into the land which he swore to them, therefore he has slain them in the wilderness.’ 17 Now please let the power of the Lord be great, according as you have spoken, saying, 18 ‘Yahweh is slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, forgiving iniquity and disobedience; and he will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and on the fourth generation.’ 19 Please pardon the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of your loving kindness, and just as you have forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now."

20 Yahweh said, "I have pardoned according to your word; 21 but in very deed—as I live, and as all the earth shall be filled with Yahweh’s glory— 22 because all those men who have seen my glory and my signs, which I worked in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet have tempted me these ten times, and have not listened to my voice; 23 surely they shall not see the land which I swore to their fathers, neither shall any of those who despised me see it. 24 But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and has followed me fully, him I will bring into the land into which he went. His offspring shall possess it. 25 Since the Amalekite and the Canaanite dwell in the valley, tomorrow turn and go into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea." 26 Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying, 27 "How long shall I bear with this evil congregation that complain against me? I have heard the complaints of the children of Israel, which they complain against me. 28 Tell them, ‘As I live, says Yahweh, surely as you have spoken in my ears, so I will do to you. 29 Your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness; and all who were counted of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, who have complained against me, 30 surely you shall not come into the land concerning which I swore that I would make you dwell therein, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun. 31 But I will bring in your little ones that you said should be captured or killed, and they shall know the land which you have rejected. 32 But as for you, your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness. 33 Your children shall be wanderers in the wilderness forty years, and shall bear your prostitution, until your dead bodies are consumed in the wilderness. 34 After the number of the days in which you spied out the land, even forty days, for every day a year, you will bear your iniquities, even forty years, and you will know my alienation.’ 35 I, Yahweh, have spoken. I will surely do this to all this evil congregation who are gathered together against me. In this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die."

36 The men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned and made all the congregation to murmur against him by bringing up an evil report against the land, 37 even those men who brought up an evil report of the land, died by the plague before Yahweh. 38 But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh remained alive of those men who went to spy out the land.

39 Moses told these words to all the children of Israel, and the people mourned greatly. 40 They rose up early in the morning and went up to the top of the mountain, saying, "Behold, we are here, and will go up to the place which Yahweh has promised; for we have sinned."

41 Moses said, "Why now do you disobey the commandment of Yahweh, since it shall not prosper? 42 Don’t go up, for Yahweh isn’t among you; that way you won’t be struck down before your enemies. 43 For there the Amalekite and the Canaanite are before you, and you will fall by the sword because you turned back from following Yahweh; therefore Yahweh will not be with you."

44 But they presumed to go up to the top of the mountain. Nevertheless, the ark of Yahweh’s covenant and Moses didn’t depart out of the camp. 45 Then the Amalekites came down, and the Canaanites who lived in that mountain, and struck them and beat them down even to Hormah.
