1 Esta é a descendência de Arão e de Moisés, registrada quando o Senhor falou a Moisés no monte Sinai. 2 Os nomes dos filhos de Arão eram Nadabe, o mais velho, Abiú, Eleazar e Itamar. 3 Esses filhos de Arão foram ungidos e consagrados para o serviço sacerdotal. 4 Nadabe e Abiú, porém, morreram na presença do Senhor, no deserto do Sinai, quando trouxeram fogo estranho diante do Senhor. Como não tinham filhos, restaram somente Eleazar e Itamar para servir como sacerdotes junto com seu pai, Arão.

5 Então o Senhor disse a Moisés: 6 "Chame à frente os membros da tribo de Levi e apresente-os ao sacerdote Arão para serem seus assistentes. 7 Eles servirão a Arão e a todo o povo no desempenho das funções na tenda do encontro e no serviço do tabernáculo. 8 Cuidarão de todos os utensílios da tenda do encontro e servirão no tabernáculo como representantes dos israelitas. 9 Nomeie os levitas como assistentes de Arão e de seus filhos, pois, dentre todos os israelitas, eles foram designados para esse propósito. 10 Encarregue Arão e seus filhos de realizarem as funções do serviço sacerdotal. Qualquer pessoa não autorizada que se aproximar do santuário será executada".

11 O Senhor também disse a Moisés: 12 "Veja, escolhi os levitas dentre os israelitas como substitutos de todos os filhos mais velhos de Israel. Os levitas me pertencem, 13 pois todos os filhos mais velhos são meus. No dia em que feri mortalmente todos os filhos mais velhos dos egípcios, consagrei para mim todos os filhos mais velhos de Israel e todos os machos das primeiras crias dos animais. Eles são meus. Eu sou o Senhor".

14 O Senhor falou ainda a Moisés no deserto do Sinai: 15 "Registre os nomes dos membros da tribo de Levi por famílias e clãs. Faça uma lista de todos os indivíduos do sexo masculino de um mês de idade para cima". 16 Moisés fez a lista, conforme o Senhor havia ordenado.

17 Levi teve três filhos: Gérson, Coate e Merari.

18 Os clãs de Gérson receberam os nomes de seus descendentes: Libni e Simei.

19 Os clãs de Coate receberam os nomes de seus descendentes: Anrão, Isar, Hebrom e Uziel.

20 Os clãs de Merari receberam os nomes de seus descendentes: Mali e Musi.

Esses foram os clãs levitas, registrados de acordo com os grupos de suas famílias.

21 Os descendentes de Gérson eram constituídos dos clãs de Libni e Simei. 22 Nos clãs gersonitas havia 7.500 indivíduos do sexo masculino de um mês de idade para cima. 23 A área designada para seu acampamento ficava no lado oeste, atrás do tabernáculo. 24 O líder dos clãs gersonitas era Eliasafe, filho de Lael. 25 Os dois clãs eram encarregados de cuidar das seguintes partes da tenda do encontro: a tenda com sua cobertura, a cortina da entrada da tenda, 26 as cortinas do pátio ao redor do tabernáculo e do altar, a cortina da entrada do pátio, as cordas e todos os objetos relacionados ao seu uso.

27 Os descendentes de Coate eram constituídos dos clãs de Anrão, Isar, Hebrom e Uziel. 28 Nos clãs coatitas havia 8.600 indivíduos do sexo masculino de um mês de idade para cima. Eram encarregados de cuidar do santuário, 29 e a área designada para seu acampamento ficava no lado sul do tabernáculo. 30 O líder dos clãs coatitas era Elisafã, filho de Uziel. 31 Eram encarregados de cuidar da arca, da mesa, do candelabro, dos dois altares, dos diversos utensílios do santuário, da cortina interna e de todos os objetos relacionados ao seu uso. 32 Eleazar, filho do sacerdote Arão, era o líder principal de todos os levitas e responsável pela supervisão do santuário.

33 Os descendentes de Merari eram constituídos dos clãs de Mali e Musi. 34 Nos clãs meraritas havia 6.200 indivíduos do sexo masculino de um mês de idade para cima. 35 A área designada para seu acampamento ficava no lado norte do tabernáculo. O líder dos clãs meraritas era Zuriel, filho de Abiail. 36 Os meraritas eram encarregados de cuidar das armações que sustentavam o tabernáculo, além dos travessões, das colunas, das bases e de todos os objetos relacionados ao seu uso. 37 Também eram responsáveis pelas colunas do pátio e por todas as suas bases, estacas e cordas.

38 A área na frente do tabernáculo, na direção do nascer do sol, do lado leste da tenda do encontro, era reservada para Moisés, Arão e seus filhos, os responsáveis finais pelo santuário em favor do povo de Israel. Qualquer um que não fosse sacerdote ou levita e se aproximasse do santuário seria executado.

39 Quando Moisés e Arão contaram os clãs levitas, conforme a ordem do Senhor, chegaram ao total de 22.000 indivíduos do sexo masculino de um mês de idade para cima.

40 Então o Senhor disse a Moisés: "Conte todos os filhos mais velhos que há em Israel de um mês de idade para cima e registre os nomes numa lista. 41 Os levitas serão reservados para mim como substitutos dos filhos mais velhos dos israelitas. Eu sou o Senhor. Os animais dos levitas serão reservados para mim como substitutos dos machos das primeiras crias dos animais de todo o povo de Israel".

42 Moisés contou os filhos mais velhos dos israelitas, exatamente conforme o Senhor havia ordenado. 43 O número de filhos mais velhos de um mês de idade para cima foi de 22.273.

44 O Senhor também disse a Moisés: 45 "Tome os levitas como substitutos dos filhos mais velhos dos israelitas e tome os animais dos levitas como substitutos dos machos das primeiras crias dos animais de todos os israelitas. Os levitas me pertencem. Eu sou o Senhor. 46 O número de filhos mais velhos de Israel excede em 273 o número de levitas. Para resgatar o excedente de filhos mais velhos, 47 recolha cinco peças de prata para cada um deles, com base no siclo do santuário, equivalente a doze gramas cada peça. 48 Entregue a prata a Arão e a seus filhos como resgate pelo número excedente de filhos mais velhos".

49 Moisés recolheu a prata para o resgate dos filhos mais velhos de Israel que excediam o número de levitas. 50 Arrecadou 1.365 peças de prata, com base no siclo do santuário, em lugar dos filhos mais velhos de Israel. 51 Moisés entregou a prata do resgate a Arão e a seus filhos, conforme o Senhor havia ordenado.

1 Now this is the history of the generations of Aaron and Moses in the day that Yahweh spoke with Moses in Mount Sinai. 2 These are the names of the sons of Aaron: Nadab the firstborn, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.

3 These are the names of the sons of Aaron, the priests who were anointed, whom he consecrated to minister in the priest’s office. 4 Nadab and Abihu died before Yahweh when they offered strange fire before Yahweh in the wilderness of Sinai, and they had no children. They are wholly given to him on the behalf of the children of Israel. 10 You shall appoint Aaron and his sons, and they shall keep their priesthood, but the stranger who comes near shall be put to death."

11 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 12 "Behold, I have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel instead of all the firstborn who open the womb among the children of Israel; and the Levites shall be mine, 13 for all the firstborn are mine. On the day that I struck down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt I made holy to me all the firstborn in Israel, both man and animal. They shall be mine. I am Yahweh."

14 Yahweh spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, saying, 15 "Count the children of Levi by their fathers’ houses, by their families. You shall count every male from a month old and upward."

16 Moses counted them according to Yahweh’s word, as he was commanded.

17 These were the sons of Levi by their names: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

18 These are the names of the sons of Gershon by their families: Libni and Shimei.

19 The sons of Kohath by their families: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel.

20 The sons of Merari by their families: Mahli and Mushi.

These are the families of the Levites according to their fathers’ houses.

21 Of Gershon was the family of the Libnites, and the family of the Shimeites. These are the families of the Gershonites.

22 Those who were counted of them, according to the number of all the males from a month old and upward, even those who were counted of them were seven thousand five hundred.

23 The families of the Gershonites shall encamp behind the tabernacle westward.

24 Eliasaph the son of Lael shall be the prince of the fathers’ house of the Gershonites. 25 The duty of the sons of Gershon in the Tent of Meeting shall be the tabernacle, the tent, its covering, the screen for the door of the Tent of Meeting, 26 the hangings of the court, the screen for the door of the court which is by the tabernacle and around the altar, and its cords for all of its service.

27 Of Kohath was the family of the Amramites, the family of the Izharites, the family of the Hebronites, and the family of the Uzzielites. These are the families of the Kohathites. 28 According to the number of all the males from a month old and upward, there were eight thousand six hundred keeping the requirements of the sanctuary.

29 The families of the sons of Kohath shall encamp on the south side of the tabernacle. 30 The prince of the fathers’ house of the families of the Kohathites shall be Elizaphan the son of Uzziel. 31 Their duty shall be the ark, the table, the lamp stand, the altars, the vessels of the sanctuary with which they minister, the screen, and all its service. 32 Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest shall be prince of the princes of the Levites, with the oversight of those who keep the requirements of the sanctuary.

33 Of Merari was the family of the Mahlites and the family of the Mushites. These are the families of Merari. 34 Those who were counted of them, according to the number of all the males from a month old and upward, were six thousand two hundred.

35 The prince of the fathers’ house of the families of Merari was Zuriel the son of Abihail. They shall encamp on the north side of the tabernacle. 36 The appointed duty of the sons of Merari shall be the tabernacle’s boards, its bars, its pillars, its sockets, all its instruments, all its service, 37 the pillars of the court around it, their sockets, their pins, and their cords.

38 Those who encamp before the tabernacle eastward, in front of the Tent of Meeting toward the sunrise, shall be Moses, with Aaron and his sons, keeping the requirements of the sanctuary for the duty of the children of Israel. The outsider who comes near shall be put to death. 39 All who were counted of the Levites, whom Moses and Aaron counted at the commandment of Yahweh, by their families, all the males from a month old and upward, were twenty-two thousand.

40 Yahweh said to Moses, "Count all the firstborn males of the children of Israel from a month old and upward, and take the number of their names. 41 You shall take the Levites for me—I am Yahweh—instead of all the firstborn among the children of Israel; and the livestock of the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the livestock of the children of Israel."

42 Moses counted, as Yahweh commanded him, all the firstborn among the children of Israel. 43 All the firstborn males according to the number of names from a month old and upward, of those who were counted of them, were twenty-two thousand two hundred seventy-three.

44 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 45 "Take the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the children of Israel, and the livestock of the Levites instead of their livestock; and the Levites shall be mine. I am Yahweh. 46 For the redemption of the two hundred seventy-three of the firstborn of the children of Israel who exceed the number of the Levites, 47 you shall take five shekels apiece for each one; according to the shekel of the sanctuary you shall take them (the shekel is twenty gerahs); 48 and you shall give the money, with which their remainder is redeemed, to Aaron and to his sons."

49 Moses took the redemption money from those who exceeded the number of those who were redeemed by the Levites; 50 from the firstborn of the children of Israel he took the money, one thousand three hundred sixty-five shekels, according to the shekel of the sanctuary; 51 and Moses gave the redemption money to Aaron and to his sons, according to Yahweh’s word, as Yahweh commanded Moses.
