1 Quando o rei Jeosafá regressou à sua terra, são e salvo, o profeta Jeú, filho de Hanani, foi ao seu encontro. Terá sido correcto que tenhas ajudado um ímpio e te tenhas feito amigo de alguém que repudia o Senhor?, perguntou-lhe. Por isso, a ira de Deus cairá sobre ti.

3 Há contudo boas coisas a teu respeito - tiraste os ídolos vergonhosos da terra, e fizeste o possível por ser fiel ao Senhor.

4 Jeosafá não se deslocou mais a Israel depois disso, e deixou-se ficar sossegado em Jerusalém.

7 Mais tarde tornou a deslocar-se através da terra, entre o povo, desde Berseba até às colinas de Efraim para encorajar as pessoas a adorar o Deus dos seus pais. Nomeou também juízes sobre toda a nação, estabelecidos nas principais cidades, e deu-lhes instruções: Vejam bem como actuam. Não fui eu quem vos nomeou - foi Deus. Ele estará convosco e vos ajudará a fazer justiça em cada caso que vos for apresentado. Tenham muito cuidado em nunca tomar decisões que não correspondam à vontade de Deus. Porque não pode haver injustiça entre juízes de Deus, não pode haver parcialidade, nem suborno.

8 Jeosafá estabeleceu tribunais em Jerusalém, também, formados por levitas, sacerdotes, líderes dos clãs e juízes. Foram estas as instruções que lhes deu: Vocês são chamados a agir sempre no temor de Deus, com corações honestos. Sempre que um caso vos seja referido pelos juízes da província, sejam casos de agressão física, sejam assuntos referentes à violação das leis e das ordenanças de Deus, deverão estabelecer com clareza todos os dados do processo e, com provas em apoio, decidir com justiça, para que a ira de Deus não venha sobre vocês e sobre eles. Se assim fizerem, livrar-se-ão de qualquer culpa nalguma injustiça que puder ser feita.

11 Depois nomeou Amarias, sacerdote supremo, como presidente dos juízes, em casos envolvendo violação de coisas sagradas; e Zebadias, filho de Ismael, chefe da tribo de Judá, presidente em todos os casos de carácter civil, tendo os levitas por assistentes. Sejam corajosos no exercício das vossas funções. Que o Senhor seja com os que são rectos.

1 And Jehoshaphat the king of Judah returned unto his own house in peace, to Jerusalem.

2 And there came out to meet him, Jehu son of Hanani, the seer, who said unto King Jehoshaphat, Unto the lawless, was it to give help? and, on them who hate Yahweh, to bestow thy love? For this cause, therefore, is there wrath against thee, from before Yahweh;

3 howbeit, good things, are found with thee,-for that thou hast consumed the Sacred Stems out of the land, and hast fixed thy heart to seek God.

4 So Jehoshaphat dwelt in Jerusalem,and he again went forth among the people, from Beersheba as far as the hill country of Ephraim, and brought them back unto Yahweh, the God of their fathers.

5 And he stationed judges in the land, throughout all the fortified cities of Judah, city by city;

6 and said unto the judges, See what, ye, are doing, inasmuch as, not for man, must ye judge, but for Yahweh,who will be with you, in the word of justice.

7 Now, therefore, let the dread of Yahweh be upon you,observe and do, for there is, with Yahweh our God, neither perversity nor respect of persons nor the taking of bribes.

8 And, even in Jerusalem, did Jehoshaphat station some of the Levites and the priests, and of the ancestral chiefs of Israel, to pronounce the just sentence of Yahweh, and to settle disputes,when they returned to Jerusalem.

9 And he laid charge upon them, saying,Thus, shall ye act, in the fear of Yahweh, faithfully and with an undivided heart.

10 Any dispute that shall come in unto you from among your brethren who are dwelling in their cities, between blood and blood, between law and commandment and statutes and regulations, then shall ye warn them, that they may not become guilty against Yahweh, and so wrath come upon you and upon your brethren,Thus, shall ye act, and not incur guilt.

11 And lo! Amariah the chief priest, is over you as to every matter of Yahweh, and Zebadiah son of Ishmael the chief ruler for the house of Judah, as to every matter of the king, and, as officers, the Levites are before you,Be strong and act, and Yahweh be with the good!
