1 Joás tinha sete anos quando começou a reinar. Reinou quarenta anos; Jerusalém era a capital do reino. Sua mãe chamava-se Zibia; era de Berseba.
2 Joás fez o que era recto enquanto viveu o sacerdote Jeoiada.
3 Este proporcionou-lhe dois casamentos; teve muitos filhos e filhas.
4 Em dada altura Joás resolveu fazer reparações no templo do Senhor. Convocou os sacerdotes e os levitas e deu-lhes as seguintes instruções: Vão a todas as cidades de Judá e façam uma colecta de ofertas como fundo de reconstrução do templo, para que tenhamos possibilidade de o renovar. Façam isso já. Não arrastem esse assunto. Contudo os levitas não tiveram pressa em obedecer.
6 O rei chamou Jeoiada, o sumo sacerdote: Porque é que não exigiste aos levitas para irem e recolherem as taxas do templo em todas as cidades de Judá e em Jerusalém? É mesmo a própria lei de Moisés que prevê o levantamento de um imposto para a conservação do tabernáculo, fez-lhe lembrar o rei; por isso há que efectivar a recolha desse dinheiro.
7 (Os seguidores de ímpia Atalia tinham arruinado o templo, e muito do equipamento sagrado destinado ao culto a Deus tinha sido levado para o templo de Baalim.) O rei deu pois instruções para que se fizesse uma caixa e se colocasse à entrada, do lado de fora do templo. Foi mandada uma proclamação a todas as cidades de Judá e a Jerusalém, convidando o povo a trazer ao Senhor a taxa que Moisés tinha instituído em Israel.
10 Todos os chefes e o povo também aceitaram isso muito bem, e começaram a trazer dinheiro, colocando-o na caixa das ofertas, a qual rapidamente ficou cheia.
11 Os levitas levaram-na à tesouraria real, onde o secretário do rei e o representante do sumo sacerdote contou o dinheiro na frente do tesoureiro, levando o cesto de novo para o templo. E assim aconteceu dia após dia, chegando-se a acumular uma abundante quantia de dinheiro.
12 O rei e Jeoiada deram este dinheiro aos empreiteiros encarregados das obras de restauro, assim como aos mestres metalúrgicos e serralheiros designados para fazerem peças em ferro e cobre.
13 Por fim o trabalho foi avançando e o templo acabou por ser restaurado, e ficou em muito melhores condições do que antes. Quando tudo acabou, o dinheiro que sobejou foi trazido ao rei e a Jeoiada; foi acordado que esse excedente seria aplicado no fabrico de colheres e de recipientes em ouro e em prata, para uso nas ofertas de incenso, e também no fabrico de outros instrumentos usados nos sacrifícios e nas ofertas. Holocaustos eram continuamente oferecidos durante o tempo de vida de Jeoiada, o sacerdote.
15 Este faleceu muito idoso, tinha a idade de cento e trinta anos.
16 Foi enterrado na cidade de David, junto aos túmulos dos reis, devido ao muito que fez por Israel, por Deus e pelo templo.
17 Contudo, após a sua morte, os líderes de Judá vieram ter com o rei Joás e induziram-no a deixar de se preocupar com o templo de Deus, a interessar-se antes pelos ídolos e pelas imagens vergonhosas dos bosques! Em consequência disso a ira de Deus desceu sobre Judá e sobre Jerusalém novamente. Deus enviou-lhes profetas, para os levar a converterem-se ao Senhor, mas o povo não lhes deu ouvidos.
20 Então o Espírito de Deus veio sobre Zacarias, filho de Jeoiada. Convocou uma grande assembleia popular; pôs-se na frente deles todos, em cima de um estrado e disse-lhes: Deus tem que saber por que razão desobedeceram aos seus mandamentos. Porque a verdade é que tudo aquilo que tentam realizar nunca resulta! E a causa é que abandonaram o Senhor; por isso vos abandonou agora!
21 Os líderes começaram a tecer uma conjura para o matar, até que o próprio rei Joás ordenou que fosse executado no pátio do templo. Foi dessa maneira infeliz que o rei Joás assinalou a memória de Jeoiada, e todo o amor e lealdade que tinha demonstrado em vida - foi matando-lhe o filho! As últimas palavras de Zacarias, ao morrer, foram: Que o Senhor veja e lhes dê a paga.
23 Uns meses mais tarde o exército sírio avançou contra Judá e Jerusalém, conquistando a terra, matando todos os líderes da nação e trazendo para Damasco grandes quantidades de despojo. Tratou-se de um grande triunfo para o exército da Síria, que até tinha poucos homens. Mas foi o Senhor quem permitiu isso - que o grande exército de Judá fosse conquistado por eles - porque tinham abandonado o Senhor Deus dos seus antepassados. Dessa forma o Senhor executou a sua sentença sobre Joás. Quando os sírios se foram embora, deixando até Joás seriamente ferido, os próprios oficiais do rei decidiram matá-lo, devido ao facto de ter assassinado o filho do sacerdote Jeoiada. Executaram-no quando estava deitado na cama, e enterraram-no na cidade de David, mas não no cemitério dos reis.
26 Os que conspiraram contra ele foram Zabade, cuja mãe se chamava Simeate, uma mulher amonita, e Jeozabade, cuja mãe era Simrite, uma moabita.
27 Os factos referentes aos filhos de Joás e também as maldições que cairam sobre ele, assim como a restauração que empreendeu do templo, podem ser lidos nos Anais dos Reis. Quando Joás morreu, o seu filho Amazias ascendeu ao trono.
1 Seven years old, was Joash when he began to reign, and, forty years, reigned he, in Jerusalem,and, the name of his mother, was Zibiah, of Beersheba.
2 And Joash did that which was right, in the eyes of Yahweh,-all the days of Jehoiada the priest.
3 And Jehoiada took for him two wives,and he begat sons and daughters.
4 And it came to pass, after this, that it was near the heart of Joash to renew the house of Yahweh.
5 So he gathered together the priests and the Levites, and said unto themGo ye out unto the cities of Judah, and gather out of all Israel silver to repair the house of your God, year by year, and, ye, shall hasten the matter,but the Levites hastened it not.
6 Then the king called for Jehoiada the chief, and said unto him, Wherefore hast thou not required of the Levites, to bring in out of Judah and out of Jerusalem the tribute of Moses the servant of Yahweh, and of the convocation of Israel,for the tent of testimony?
7 For, as for Athaliah the Lawless, her sons, brake up the House of God,moreover, all the hallowed things of the house of Yahweh, offered they unto the Baalim.
8 So the king bade , and they made a certain chest,and set it in the gate of the house of Yahweh, outside.
9 And they made a proclamation, throughout Judah and Jerusalem, to bring in unto Yahweh the tribute of Moses the servant of God, laid upon Israel in the desert.
10 And all the rulers and all the people rejoiced,and brought in and cast into the chest, until they had finished.
11 And it came to pass, what time the chest was brought into the office of the king by the hand of the Levites, and when they had seen that abundant was the silver, that the scribe of the king came in, and the officer of the chief priest, and they emptied the chest, and bare it, and put it back in its place,thus, they did, day by day, and collected silver, in abundance;
12 and the king and Jehoiada gave it unto such as were doing the work of labouring upon the house of Yahweh, and they were hiring masons and carpenters, to renew the house of Yahweh,moreover also, such as were fashioners of iron and bronze, to repair the house of Yahweh.
13 So the doers of the work wrought, and the work of restoration went forward, in their hand,and they caused the house of God to stand forth according to its due proportions, and made it strong.
14 And, when they had finished, they brought in before the king and Jehoiada the rest of the silver, and he made it into utensils for the house of Yahweh, utensils of attendance, and bowls and spoons, even utensils of gold and silver. Then were they offering ascending-sacrifices in the house of Yahweh, continually, all the days of Jehoiada.
15 But Jehoiada waxed old and became satisfied with days, and died,a hundred and thirty years old, when he died.
16 And they buried him in the city of David, with the kings,because he had done good in Israel, both toward God and his house.
17 Now, after the death of Jehoiada, came the rulers of Judah, and bowed themselves down unto the king,then, hearkened the king unto them.
18 And they forsook the house of Yahweh, God of their fathers, and served the Sacred Stems, and the images,so there was wrath against Judah and Jerusalem, for this their guilt.
19 And he sent among them prophets, to bring them back unto Yahweh,and they testified against them, but they would not give ear.
20 And, the spirit of God, clothed Zechariah son of Jehoiada the priest, and he took his stand above the people,and said unto them, Thus, saith God, Wherefore are, ye, transgressing the commandments of Yahweh, so that ye cannot prosper, because ye have forsaken Yahweh, therefore hath he forsaken you.
21 So they conspired against him, and stoned him with stones, by the commandment of the king,in the court of the house of Yahweh.
22 Thus Joash the king, remembered not, the lovingkindness which Jehoiada his father had done for him, but slew his son,and, as he died, he said, Yahweh see and require!
23 And it came to pass, when the year had gone round, that the force of Syria came up against him, and they entered Judah, and Jerusalem, and destroyed all the rulers of the people, from among the people,and, all the spoil of them, sent they unto the king of Damascus.
24 Although, with a comparatively few men, came the force of Syria, yet, Yahweh, delivered into their hand an exceeding large force,because they had forsaken Yahweh, the God of their fathers,and, upon Joash, executed they judgments.
25 And, when they had departed from him, for they left him with sore diseases, his own servants conspired against him, for the blood of the son of Jehoiada the priest, and slew him upon his bed, and he died,and, though they buried him in the city of David, yet did they not bury him in the sepulchres of the kings.
26 Now, these, are they that conspired against him,Zabad son of Shimeath the Ammonitess, and Jehozabad son of Shimrith the Moabitess.
27 But, as for his sons, and the greatness of the oracle on him, and the foundation of the house of God, lo! there they are written, in the commentary of the Book of Kings,and Amaziah his son reigned in his stead.
