1 Alguns anos mais tarde e após toda esta fidelidade da parte do rei Ezequias às coisas de Deus, o rei Senaqueribe da Assíria invadiu Judá e pôs cerco às cidades fortificadas com a intenção de as submeter.
2 Quando se ficou com a certeza de que Senaqueribe tinha o intuito de atacar Jerusalém, Ezequias mandou chamar os seus conselheiros e governantes para um conselho de guerra, tendo ficado decidido tapar as fontes do lado de fora da cidade; e para isso mobilizaram uma enorme quantidade de gente, que, para além desse trabalho, também se empenhou no corte das águas do rebeiro que atravessava os campos: Para que viria o rei da Assíria achar tanta água?, diziam eles.
5 Seguidamente consolidou a sua defesa, reparando a muralha onde havia fendas e levantando, junto às torres fortificadas, outra muralha do lado de fora. Também reforçou a construção do forte de Milo na cidade de David; e mandou fabricar grande quantidade de armas e de escudos. Mobilizou o exército, nomeou oficiais, mandando-os concentraram-se nas campinas, em frente da cidade e encorajando-os:
7 Esforcem-se e sejam corajosos; não tenham medo do rei da Assíria nem do seu poderoso exército. Porque connosco está quem é muito maior do que ele! O exército dele é grande, mas não passam de simples homens, enquanto que nós temos o Senhor nosso Deus combatendo do nosso lado! Estas palavras foram para eles de grande incentivo.
9 Senaqueribe, o rei da Assíria, enquanto sitiava ainda a cidade de Laquis, enviou embaixadores ao rei Ezequias, com a seguinte mensagem para ser dirigida ao povo de Jerusalém:
10 O rei Senaqueribe da Assíria pergunta-vos o seguinte: Pensam vocês poder sobreviver ao cerco que porei a Jerusalém? Não serve de nada que o rei Ezequias tente persuadir-vos a um suicídio colectivo, levando-vos a permanecerem na cidade, morrendo de fome e de sede, ao mesmo tempo que vos promete que 'o Senhor nosso Deus nos livrará do rei da Assíria!' O rei Ezequias foi o mesmo que destruiu todos os ídolos, e ordenou que em Judá e em Jerusalém se usasse unicamente o altar do templo, queimando incenso apenas aí. Mas não estão a ver que tanto eu como os outros reis da Assíria que foram antes de mim nunca fomos impedidos de conquistar qualquer nação que atacássemos? Nenhum dos deuses dessas nações já conquistadas foi capaz de fazer a mais pequena coisa para salvar essas terras! Digam-me o nome de um apenas que tivesse podido resistir com sucesso aos nossos ataques. Sendo assim, o que é que vos leva a acreditar que o vosso Deus pode ser melhor que os outros? Não se deixem enganar por Ezequias! Não creiam nele. Repito - não houve ainda deus de nação nenhuma que alguma vez tivesse sido capaz de salvar o seu povo da minha mão, nem da dos meus antecessores; e muito menos o vosso Deus o poderá fazer!Desta maneira falou o embaixador, com desprezo pelo Senhor Deus e pelo servo de Deus Ezequias, debitando todos aqueles insultos!
17 Senaqueribe fez acompanhar os embaixadores de cartas injuriosas para com o Senhor Deus de Israel: Nenhum dos deuses das outras nações conseguiu salvar os seus povos das minhas mãos. O Deus de Ezequias também não conseguirá, escreveu ele.
18 Os embaixadores gritaram ameaças, em língua judaica, dirigindo-se ao povo, que se juntara sobre as muralhas da cidade, tentando aterrorizá-lo e desencorajá-lo. Falavam do Deus de Jerusalém, como se se tratasse de um simples deus pagão, de um ídolo feito por mãos de homens!
20 O rei Ezequias e o profeta Isaías, filho de Amós, clamaram em oração a Deus no céu. Em resposta, o Senhor enviou um anjo que destruiu o exército assírio, com todos os seus oficiais e generais! Senaqueribe foi obrigado a regressar à sua terra, coberto de vergonha. E quando entrou no templo do seu deus, uns filhos seus mataram-no ali mesmo. Foi assim que o Senhor salvou Ezequias mais o povo de Jerusalém. E houve enfim paz na terra.
23 A partir de então o rei Ezequias tornou-se muito respeitado entre as nações vizinhas. Muitos estrangeiros traziam ricos presentes a Jerusalém, para os oferecer ao Senhor, e também ao rei Ezequias.
24 Uns tempos depois Ezequias adoeceu gravemente. Orou ao Senhor, que respondeu através de um milagre. No entanto Ezequias não correspondeu a esse benefício com um verdadeiro espírito de gratidão, porque se deixou ganhar pelo orgulho. Por isso Deus se indignou contra Judá e Jerusalém. Finalmente Ezequias, e a população de Jerusalém, humilharam-se; em consequência, a ira do Senhor não se manifestou durante o tempo de vida do rei.
27 Ezequias teve muitas riquezas e foi altamente honrado. Teve de construir cofres especiais para guardar o ouro, a prata e as pedras preciosas, mais as especiarias, e ainda os escudos e taças de ouro. Edificou igualmente muitos armazéns para recolha de cereais, de vinhos, de azeite; e também construiu estábulos para os seus animais e currais para os grandes rebanhos de ovelhas e cabras que adquirira. Fundou ainda povoações em grande número - Deus deu-lhe grande prosperidade.
30 Tapou a fonte superior de Giom, e fez correr as águas para baixo, através de aqueduto, a ocidente do bairro de Jerusalém chamado cidade de David. Foi muito feliz nas obras que empreendeu.
31 Contudo, quando vieram embaixadores de Babilónia, para se informarem do milagre da sua cura, Deus deixou-o agir sozinho, sem interferir, para que se revelasse inteiramente o seu carácter.
32 O resto da história de Ezequias, e todas as boas coisas que realizou, estão escritas no Livro de Isaías, o profeta, filho de Amós, e nos Anais dos Reis de Judá e de Israel. Quando morreu, Ezequias foi enterrado no cemitério real da encosta da colina, entre os outros reis. Foi honrado por toda a população de Judá e de Jerusalém com exéquias solenes, na sua morte. Manassés, seu filho ascendeu ao trono, em seu lugar.
1 After these things done in faithfulness, came Sennacherib king of Assyria,and entered into Judah, and encamped against the fortified cities, and thought to break into them for himself.
2 And, when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come,and that, his face, wasto war, against Jerusalem,
3 he took counsel with his captains and his heroes, to stop the waters of the fountains, which were outside the city,-and they helped him.
4 And there were gathered together much people, so they stopped all the fountains, and the torrent that flowed through the midst of the land, saying,Wherefore should the kings of Assyria come, and find many waters?
5 And he took courage, and built all the wall that was broken down and carried up thereon towers, and, on the outside, another wall, and strengthened Millo, the city of David,-and made weapons in abundance, and bucklers,
6 and set captains of war over the people,and gathered them together unto him in the broadway of the gate of the city, and spake unto their heart, saying,
7 Be strong and bold, do not fear neither be dismayed, because of the king of Assyria, nor because of all the multitude that is with him,for, with us, is One greater than with him:
8 with him, is an arm of flesh, but, with us, is Yahweh our God, to help us, and to fight our battles. And the people leaned upon the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.
9 After this, Sennacherib king of Assyria sent his servants towards Jerusalem, himself, being near Lachish, and all his imperial might with him,unto Hezekiah king of Judah, and unto all Judah that was in Jerusalem, saying:
10 Thus, saith Sennacherib, king of Assyria,-Upon what, are, ye, trusting, that ye are awaiting the siege in Jerusalem?
11 Is not, Hezekiah, persuading you, so as to deliver you up to die with hunger and with thirst, saying,Yahweh our God, will deliver us out of the hand of the king of Assyria?
12 Is it not, the same Hezekiah, who hath removed his high places, and his altars,and hath given word to Judah and Jerusalem, saying, Before one altar, shall ye bow yourselves down, and, thereupon, shall ye burn incense?
13 Will ye not take note, what I have done, I and my fathers, to all the peoples of the countries? Have the gods of the nations of the countries been, at all able, to deliver their country, out of my hand?
14 Who, among all the gods of these nations whom my fathers devoted to destruction, hath ever been able to deliver his people out of my hand,that your god should be able to deliver you out of my hand?
15 Now, therefore, do not let Hezekiah beguile you nor persuade you thus, neither do ye believe him. For no, god, of any nation or kingdom hath ever been able to deliver his people out of my hand, or out of the hand of my fathers,-how much less shall, your gods, deliver you, out of my hand?
16 And, yet more, spake his servants, against Yahweh, God,and against Hezekiah his servant.
17 Letters, also wrote he, to scoff at Yahweh God of Israel, and to speak against him, saying, Like the gods of the nations of the countries, who delivered not their people out of my hand, so, shall the god of Hezekiah not deliver his people out of my hand.
18 Then cried they out, with a loud voice, in the Jews language, unto the people of Jerusalem who were upon the wall, to affright them, and to terrify them,to the end they might capture the city.
19 And they spake against the God of Jerusalem,as against the gods of the peoples of the earth, the work of the hands of men.
20 And Hezekiah the king and Isaiah son of Amoz, the prophet, prayed concerning this,-and made outcry unto the heavens,
21 So Yahweh sent a messenger, who cut off every hero of valour, and chief ruler and captain, in the camp of the king of Assyria,and he returned with shame of face to his own land, and, when he entered the house of his god, then, the issue of his own bodythere, caused him to fall by the sword.
22 Thus did Yahweh save Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem out of the hand of Sennacherib king of Assyria, and out of the hand of every one,and gave them rest on every side.
23 And, many, were bringing in a present unto Yahweh, to Jerusalem, and precious things, unto Hezekiah king of Judah,so that he was exalted in the eyes of all the nations, from thenceforth.
24 In those days, was Hezekiah sick unto death,and, when he prayed unto Yahweh, he was entreated of him and, a wonderful token, he gave him.
25 But, not according to the benefit done unto him, did Hezekiah make return, for uplifted was his heart,and so there came upon him, wrath, and upon Judah and Jerusalem.
26 Then Hezekiah humbled himself, for the uplifting of his heart, he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem,so that the wrath of Yahweh came not upon them, in the days of Hezekiah.
27 And it came to pass that, Hezekiah, had riches and honour in great abundance,and, treasuries, made he for himselffor silver and for gold and for costly stones, and for spices and for precious things, and for all utensils to be coveted;
28 storehouses also, for the increase of corn, and new wine and oil,and cribs for every kind of beast, and cribs for the flocks;
29 and, cities, made he for himself, and possessions of flocks and herds, in abundance,for God had given him exceeding great wealth.
30 And, the same Hezekiah, stopped up the upper spring of the waters of Gihon, and brought them straight down the west side of the city of David,and Hezekiah prospered in all his work.
31 Yet verily, with regard to the ambassadors of the rulers of Babylon, who sent unto him to enquire concerning the wonderful token which came to pass in the land, God left him,to prove him, to take note of all that was in his heart.
32 But, the rest of the story of Hezekiah, and his lovingkindnesses, there they are, written in the visions of Isaiah son of Amoz, the prophet, in the book of the Kings of Judah and Israel.
33 And Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the ascent of the sepulchres of the sons of David, and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem did him, honour, in his death,and Manasseh his son reigned in his stead.
