1 Escutem, chefes de Israel - pressupõe-se que vocês sabem discernir o bem do mal;2 E o certo é que são vocês justamente quem mais odeia o bem e ama o mal; são vocês quem explora o meu povo a ponto de ficar apenas com a pele e o osso!‹3 Espancam-no, tiram-lhe a pele, partem-lhe os ossos, fazem-no em pedaços, como carne dentro dum caldeirão, e devoram-no!4 E, depois disso tudo, ainda ousam implorar o Senhor que vos ajude em tempos de adversidade. Acham mesmo que Deus vos responderá? Com toda a certeza que antes virará a cara para outro lado.5 Vocês são falsos profetas! Fizeram desviar o povo do caminho justo! Gritam paz, para aqueles que vos sustentam, e ameaçam os que não vos pagam!6 Esta é a mensagem que vos dou: Virá a noite sobre vocês, a qual porá um termo a todas as vossas visões; a escuridão vos cobrirá7 e não perceberão mais uma só palavra do Senhor. O Sol por-se-á sobre as vossas vidas; será o fim do vosso dia. Então, por fim, hão-de cobrir as caras de vergonha; admitirão que nunca transmitiram mensagem alguma vinda de Deus.8 Mas quanto a mim, estou cheio do poder do Espírito do Senhor, cheio de ânimo para anunciar a justiça de Deus sobre os pecados de Israel.9 Ouçam-me, líderes de Israel, vocês que odeiam a justiça e amam a iniquidade,f10 que enchem Jerusalém com assasínio e com toda a espécie de pecados,11 vocês, chefes, que são os primeiros a deixarem-se comprar por suborno; vocês, sacerdotes e profetas, que recusam pregar e profetizar enquanto não forem pagos. E contudo pavoneiam-se perante o Senhor dizendo: Está tudo bem - o Senhor está no nosso meio!12 É precisamente por causa de vocês, no fundo, que Jerusalém há-de ser lavrada como campo a cultivar, e que acabará por se tornar num monte de pedregulhos; o monte onde se ergue o templo ficará coberto de um bosque monte do Senhor

1 And I said, Hear, I pray you, O heads of Jacob, and ye princes of the house of Israel: Is it not for you to know judgment?2 Who hate the good, and love the evil; who pluck off their skin from them, and their flesh from off their bones;3 Who also eat the flesh of my people, and flay their skin from off them; and they break their bones, and chop them in pieces, as for the pot, and as flesh within the caldron.4 Then shall they cry to the LORD, but he will not hear them: he will even hide his face from them at that time, as they have behaved themselves ill in their doings.5 Thus saith the LORD concerning the prophets that make my people err, that bite with their teeth, and cry, Peace; and he that putteth not into their mouths, they even prepare war against him:6 Therefore night shall be to you, that ye shall not have a vision; and it shall be dark to you, that ye shall not divine; and the sun shall go down over the prophets, and the day shall be dark over them.7 Then shall the seers be ashamed, and the diviners confounded: yes, they shall all cover their lips; for there is no answer of God.8 But truly I am full of power by the spirit of the LORD, and of judgment, and of might, to declare to Jacob his transgression, and to Israel his sin.9 Hear this, I pray you, ye heads of the house of Jacob, and princes of the house of Israel, that abhor judgment, and pervert all equity.10 They build up Zion with blood, and Jerusalem with iniquity.11 Her heads judge for reward, and her priests teach for hire, and her prophets divine for money; yet will they lean upon the LORD, and say, Is not the LORD among us? no evil can come upon us.12 Therefore shall Zion for your sake be plowed as a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps, and the mountain of the house as the high places of the forest.
