1 Ouçam o que diz o Senhor ao seu povo: Levantem-se e defendam a vossa situação perante mim. Que sejam chamadas por testemunhas as montanhas e os outeiros.2 Agora, ó montanhas, escutem a acusação do Senhor! Porque tem acusações a fazer contra o seu povo Israel! Irá até ao fim com esse processo acusatório.3 Ó meu povo, que foi que eu fiz para me voltares as costas? Diz-me por que razão se esgotou a tua paciência? Responde-me!=4 Trouxe-te do Egipto, rompi as cadeias de escravidão que te prendiam. Dei-te Moisés, Arão, Miriam que te ajudaram.5 Não te lembras, ó meu povo, como o rei de Moabe tentou destruir-te, através da maldição de Balaão, o filho de Beor, e que eu transformei em bênção? Mostrei-te bondade continuamente. Não te recordas da travessia do Jordão entre Sitim e Gilgal, como te abençoei ali?6 Mas como é que havemos de te mostrar reconhecimento pelo que fizeste?, perguntam vocês. Teremos que nos vir inclinar perante o Senhor, com ofertas de bezerros de um ano?7 Não, não é isso! Ainda que viessem com ofertas de milhares de animais e com dezenas de milhares de litros de azeite, isso não o satisfaria. Se lhe sacrificassem os vossos filhos primogénitos, recusá-lo-ia em absoluto!8 O Senhor já te declarou, ó homem, o que é o bem. O que o Senhor pretende de ti é que pratiques a justiça, ames a misericórdia, e andes com humildade perante ele culpa e o castigo de Israel9 É sábio escutar o Senhor com temor. Ele clama para a cidade: Ouve, ó povo que te congregas em Jerusalém. Estão a chegar exércitos destruidores; é o Senhor quem os manda.10 Porque os vossos pecados são muito grandes - será que não tem um termo o enriquecerem por meio da fraude?11 As casas dos ímpios estão cheias de balanças e de pesos falseados. Poderia eu dizer Está bem a todos os vossos comerciantes que têm pesos falsos e enganosos. Como havia Deus de ser justo, e dizer uma coisa dessas?12 Os vossos homens ricos estão cheios de prosperidade adquirida pela violência e usurpação. O povo está já tão viciado na mentira que nem sabe falar doutra maneira!13 É por isso tudo que comecei a ferir-vos, a assolar-vos por causa dos vossos pecados14 Comerão mas nunca se fartarão; a fome e a miséria permanecerão. Ainda que tentem esforçadamente poupar dinheiro, sempre será insuficiente; o pouco que conseguirem economizar, será dado aos que vos dominam15 Plantarão sementeiras que nunca mais ceifarão; pisarão azeitonas para obter azeite, mas nunca conseguirão nenhum para vocês mesmos; pisarão uvas e nunca terão vinho.16 As únicas ordens a que obedecem são as de Omri; o único exemplo que seguem é o de Acabe. Por isso farei de vocês um terrível exemplo para o mundo inteiro - destruir-vos-ei. Serão alvo de troça de toda a gente. Quando falarem de vocês será com ar de despreso, de riso.

1 Hear ye now what the LORD saith; Arise, contend thou before the mountains, and let the hills hear thy voice.2 Hear ye, O mountains, the LORD'S controversy, and ye strong foundations of the earth: for the LORD hath a controversy with his people, and he will plead with Israel.3 O my people, what have I done to thee? and wherein have I wearied thee? testify against me,4 For I brought thee out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed thee from the house of servants; and I sent before thee Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.5 O my people, remember now what Balak king of Moab consulted, and what Balaam the son of Beor answered him from Shittim to Gilgal; that ye may know the righteousness of the LORD.6 Wherewith shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before the high God? shall I come before him with burnt-offerings, with calves of a year old?7 Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? shall I give my first-born for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?8 He hath shown thee, O man, what is good; and what the LORD doth require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?9 The LORD'S voice crieth to the city, and the man of wisdom shall see thy name: hear ye the rod, and who hath appointed it.10 Are there yet the treasures of wickedness in the house of the wicked, and the scant measure that is abominable?11 Shall I count them pure with the wicked balances, and with the bag of deceitful weights?12 For the rich men thereof are full of violence, and the inhabitants thereof have spoken lies, and their tongue is deceitful in their mouth.13 Therefore also will I make thee sick in smiting thee, in making thee desolate because of thy sins.14 Thou shalt eat, but not be satisfied; and thy casting down shall be in the midst of thee; and thou shalt take hold, but shalt not deliver; and that which thou deliverest will I give up to the sword.15 Thou shalt sow, but thou shalt not reap; thou shalt tread the olives, but thou shalt not anoint thee with oil; and sweet wine, but shalt not drink wine.16 For the statutes of Omri are kept, and all the works of the house of Ahab, and ye walk in their counsels; that I should make thee a desolation, and the inhabitants thereof an hissing: therefore ye shall bear the reproach of my people.
